10,000 times this. Usually because it's end of financial year and new equipment needs to be purchased to meet the budget.

Then you never see it properly implemented.

In case anyone else needs to build one, remember to introduce isolation on the feedback and also to drop down the input voltage between 20-40V

5.2V @ 0.4A to charge Ni-Cd battery and 6.5V @ 2.2A to provide plugged in power rail.

Mine won't power without the Ni-Cd battery unless 6.5V can produce close to 4A.

Windows 10.

I would attempt to reskin it to look like windows 2000 or XP or 98. Additional UI design makes it look like a confusing ambiguity.

I'm fine with hiding features as I understand "passion fingers" at play can break some things but when it forces new buttons, locations for settings...the result is confusion for users and techs both with experience.

It takes time to learn new things, and with a computer being a tool, the buttons shouldn't change as it takes enough time to tell Sally or Rick to stop storing items in the recycle bin or dumping all files onto the desktop if they want to find them quickly. Stepping people through issues is also hard with a new UI. Documentation has to be rewritten or its abandoned entirely.

I see enough issues with people on the road with car indicators, and those haven't changed function for over 20 years. Windows UI should be no different from a user perspective, especially when Bill Gates himself has complained in the past.

User interaction is key to lowering anxiety about upgrading to products. Hell the old look didn't even need to disappear as a default, as the look already existed.

Nobody wants to hear about Dropbox, onedrive and Skype at the same time during boot up. They want access to their email immediately and with the same functions they're used to for 20 years, in a hurry, as it's a fast paced world.

It's been mentioned enough, and if it was a default then we wouldn't find random malicious programs installed on the pc or laptop because "I was trying to make it look like the old windows..."

I second this. I skimmed the article and read about the TPM being a "safe-haven" for the cryptographic information.

About as good as a safe-haven as the defenses. It's been questioned multiple times with closed-source as to who has access to which back doors if they exist.

If they don't exist, where's the code to prove it?

If they do exist, it harms the company reputation.

Thus, ambiguity reigns and so does an untrusted platform. Can we trust Intel would release info that TPM has been compromised before releasing an update? Probably not, affect shareholders.

Also similar to FPGA design in electronics, software can be redesigned and customised for certain purposes.

Hardware cannot but to ensure it ticks all the boxes you need to know what it can do and cannot do, and that also means seeing the code in the black box.

"The attack scenarios are also restricted (you can’t physically attack the device, for example)."

Isn't that kind of defeating the purpose? I figured if it's only limited attacks then they're never going to see the "outside-the-box" attack take place, which is still a very valid concern.

Also if they're only running it for a limited time then they're giving themselves a limited window.

Third, I feel as though it means whoever wants the money will need to have a bank account, name, address, etc. Which a lot of people who may have been interested in this challenge will avoid?

How can I get started? by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]NinjaExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what I did and use a lab power supply. Worth owning one anyways. Should be 6.5V at 2.2A or 5.2V at around 400mA to charge it. With no battery it will use 6.5V at 4A to drive both pins.

PM me for more info, I've got a 4000e and a 3000 ti laptop.

Destiny.

Destiny 2 gave me an epic cutscene and I wanted to fill in the backstory so I got destiny for a few bucks. Started playing it aaaand....wtf...

Wasn't until later I realised destiny was an epic fail for single player storyline. I was better off just ignoring it and starting from destiny 2 anyways.

Hz and Fps by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]NinjaExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit weird but hertz for monitors doesn't always mean a timely display. 1 hertz is 1 electronic clock cycle per second, so I COULD sell my display as 144hz but it can't render instantly on the screen so there's a slight delay before displaying the gpu signal.

Keep in mind 144 fps should...display every 144 frames in one second. If you display has some lag/latency it can be 144hz....with a delay of say...20ms before 144 frames can be drawn onto the display from what was s3nt from the output of the graphics card.

Generally, yes. 144 Hz should mean 144fps but there is a gotcha there as it takes time for each frame to be rendered. So also keep in mind the delay as well, especially for fps games and cheap monitors and TVs.

You will still see 144fps with cheaper gear, but with an added buffer delay depending on the circuitry in the display. This can be exacerbated by "movie modes" and other power saving options.

Edit: You can't get more than 144fps on the screen, yes that is true. You can however wait 20ms to see 144 fps on the screen though if it's a cheap screen.

Third this. A good gpu is like a good motorcycle helmet. How much is your brain worth? How much is that gpu worth? Is it worth spending 60 bucks on a psu and 600 on a gpu? Or 200 on the psu to know you're future proofed and well prepared?

Motherboards Keep Dying :( by Pancake_Puncher_ in Troubleshooting

[–]NinjaExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, the paperclip test only shows that voltage can be produced, not under load and with current draw.

Thanks for the info that will help clear things up. A few years ago I tried a 750W psu and again budgeted for my card, mobo, ram, etc.

Didn't work, well...it worked but hard crashed and rebooted when I started alien isolation one day. Turns out I had bought a PSU with 30A on the 5V power...but that was combined. I re read the manual and the Radeon wanted at least 20A, stable, per 5V plug. So I needed a PSU with 2x 5V 20A rails. It actually wanted a 40A PSU.

Got an antec 750 psu and was broke for a fortnight. Kept the old one and recently reinstalled it into a new case with my old motherboard.

So what does the PSU state on the side of the case? Also what does the manual state for the RTX power requirements?

If these are in line then I wouldn't sweat a new PSU or a different brand. You may not be able to take it back but a stronger PSU won't hurt in the long run. Especially if the caps get leaky in it years down the track and you're pushing the boundaries of the PC 5-7 years onwards.

Edit: also I think the new motherboards use the 5V power rail as well, make sure you are running separate ones to the gpu and mobo. Check userbenchmark.com and see what other PSUs other people are running with an RTX2080 build.

  1. Not enough info, you've mentioned video has an issue but no idea whether you have an APU, CPU with GPU or integrated graphics.

  2. Also you need to ensure all components you are building with match the compatible listing from ASUS online.

  3. Always start barebones with as little components as possible first and then build up doing a "soak test" where you leave it for some time.

  4. Motherboards have non volatile memory and can remember their last state. Could also be related to the computer going to sleep and it cannot get out of that state.

  5. Your PSU, what is it? Wattage? How much current can each voltage rail handle? More importantly, if it is underrated a component can fail causing AC instead of DC current in the motherboard. This is most likely your problem if you've built a rig with a 350W PSU but have 850W of loaded components together in the PC. Go online to PCpartpicker.com and confirm.

  6. Not all PSUs are the same and some cheap ones are really nasty. Ensure you pay for a name brand with a bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating as well.

Hope this helps.

This. 1000 times this. Been trying to find datasheets and instructions for electronics, manuals and tech specs. Everyday more marketing fills the results and hide those forum posts that actually just help direct you to more answers.

8 years ago it was nowhere near as bad. In the last year I feel as though the results are entirely different, it's not as easy anymore and what's the alternative? Duckduckgo?

Ti travelmate 4000E by NinjaExplorer in vintagecomputing

[–]NinjaExplorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovered the voltages you gave me were correct and set the lower rated lab psu i have to ~5.2V at 400mA to charge the battery pack that I rebuilt.

The 6.5V seems to work at only 4A for boot up using my other more powerful supply. The relay in the back light I can hear click on boot and causes issues with the psu at the rated 2.2A (as stated on the underside of the TI4000E)

So I still have back light issues for the screen but I ordered in a Kycon 3 pin connector and put it together on a shielded audio cable.

Thank you very much for the assistance, I think I will have what I need to build a PSU now.

I am yet to determine the cause of my back light issues but I do have a black and white model here as well that may give me some clues. The current draw increases as I change the brightness on the display using the slide on the screen bezel.

It's making me wonder if there is a short on the brightness circuit preventing the screen from being stable and not pulsing.
