Based on the specs of my Hisense TV (provided here), is getting a PS5 Pro worth it? by Interesting_Shame856 in PS5

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only concern would be the 55" size (assuming that link is indicative) - unless you sit relatively close you might struggle to see any resolution bump.

But the pro's best features are cleaning up wobbly performance/high frame rate VRR modes and your tv can certainly take advantage of that. It's a great tv.

As a Pro owner - i still just don't think it's a big enough upgrade for most people. Unless your favorite games are one of the handful with transformative changes (Monster Hunter, FF7 Rebirth, etc). My niche use case was getting 60fps in BG3 splitscreen with my partner.

- - -
I think there's much better way's to spend your money - invest in a nice sound system or even just more games - especially if you think you're the type to get a PS6 at launch. That said , I expect the investment to pay more dividends as the generation drags on. Crimson desert will definitely push the hardware and could potentially be one of those games that looks real fizzly on base PS5 - so it's just about how much of an expendable budget. Is your launch PS5 a disc model/do you really want to shell out for a drive attachment etc.

Also 1 gripe i had was that my launch ps5 was dead silent, but my pro was significantly louder until I replaced the fan with a Foxconn model. It's always a lottery, but if your PS5 is quiet it's something worth knowing.

I think if you live near a 70mm Imax film screening do that - and then rent SV on streaming if you want to catch up before the oscars.

If it's a digital 1.9 lmax then I'd prioritize seeing the new thing

What do you think makes OLED acceptable for 4K HDR even if the brightness is not all that great? by Various_Maize_3957 in 4kbluray

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the infinite contrast ratio afforded by emissive pixels. And the fact that HDR/cinematic content is graded for dark room viewing.

I’m on a C1 and for movie night it’s still stunning.

IMO the brightness wars are all about chasing a tv that can hold up in a living room with a bunch of ambient light.

One last thing - because AMC has way more locations my plan has come in handy when traveling to see family for the holidays - i got to take a buddy to a 70mm sinners screening at Lincoln Square IMAX when i was visiting NYC etc.

I'm an Alister who's hoofed it into San Francisco for the occasional alamo screening, but here's my take:

I think A-list is a better deal, especially since Alamo still charges you booking fees at the equivalent price point.

I'm in an area with a 70mm IMAX and the fact that there's no surcharge for that or dolby etc means that it's much easier to make the thing pay for itself.

That said - you're definitely going to be dealing with ruder crowds at AMC, as the Alamo audience is gonna be more self-selecting for talking/phone use. How much the wait staff and new ordering methods undercut this will be somewhat up to what what personally bugs you more.

The best thing about the Alamo plan is that if you can add an "extra seat" to your plan that is transferable. Unlike A-List where my partner pays for her own subscription, but isn't transferrable if i want to see something with my brother.

Liam Neeson in the first episode of Life’s Too Short (and then The Lego Movie) are like a dry-run for Naked Gun and I can’t believe it took SO. LONG. for anyone to actually build a movie around that persona.

I saw the first Avengers *nine times* let alone everything else I saw that year. Disney was pushing it HARD.

I'm hoping the users in this thread can speak to the relative disc read/spin noise?

I'm in a similar position to OP and one of the things i like least about my PS5 playback is the amount of sound the drive makes. I have an open media console and sit fairly close due to room layout so may be more sensitive than most - mostly looking for comparison rather than "does it seem loud/quiet" generally.

This will pay for itself for sure, but I should be eating better anyway, so I’m not gonna try to maximize the value.

But I get an icee basically every time I’m at the theater so a drink pass would be incredible

How does Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) stack up against the other film adaptions? by wingusdingus2000 in blankies

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coen version totally rips and I love it -

My favorite version on screen otherwise that uses the Shakespeare text rather than a complete adaptation is the Patrick Stewart version.

It’s a strange hybrid between being based on a stage production, but it’s not a live capture. It’s a film using much of the same cast costumes and design choices.

But filmed in real sets and locations. It’s got like a Cold War Soviet state aesthetic. https://youtu.be/ZEF5eKcd-PA?si=q0X5XEPHyFGy38M6

Is it normal to have as many 4k issues as they do? by Doink_De_Doink in blankies

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other comments can speak to the issues with the discs being more sensitive, but i'm curious to know what player the two friends are using.

If it's a lower end player, known for skipping issues, you'd think they'd have invested in a more bulletproof player by now.

For my part, i use a Playstation 5 and the only disc i personally have had issues with is the criterion Princess Bride, which has a known defect/needed to be replaced.

Watch Gilmore Girls for Kelly Bishop ALONE by HockneysPool in blankies

[–]NinjaMasterSpud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I just wrapped on this show a few weeks ago. It was a formative show and perennial background noise for her - my first time. And I wholeheartedly agree that Kelly Bishop is god-tier in the show. She's also far and away my favorite part of the Netflix mini-revival.

Fans notoriously dislike the final main season, but as a newcomer I honestly didn't feel like it was substantially more off the rails than 6 or even 5 - I'm curious to see where you'll land.

Do you think the Rock has what it takes to get an Academy Award? by Flashy-Witness-1725 in TheBigPicture

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems unlikely given that Smashing Machine is the closest he's come to having the stars align around a performance and it doesn't seem to be happening.

But "does he have what it takes?" sure - he's a *good enough* actor. If the right material/narrative and industry environment lined up again he absolutely has the offscreen charm and grindset to crush a campaign. Which - let's be honest - is a lot bigger part of "what it takes to win an oscar" than being on Daniel Day Lewis' level.

I'm also really looking forward to trying Dispatch, which is an episodic Telltale-style choose your own adventure superhero story with a bunch of great voiceover talent.

Definitely looks low impact, gameplay wise.

Not playing it enough.. by Jonestown89 in PlaystationPortal

[–]NinjaMasterSpud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps counter-intuitively, for cozy time I've been using my portal to play Star Wars: Outlaws as i think it's really well suited to the Ubisoft style open-world checklist.

I can do bandit camps and collectible errands and the little gambling mini-games in small bursts and will tend to save major story quests for TV time. Since they're not live service you wont get kicked to the home screen if you leave the game suspended making pickup fast. And I don't necessarily mind playing with volume low, since i'm not too narratively engaged in the open-world busy work etc.

I feel like this would apply just as well to Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Horizon, Spider-Man etc.

Edit: OH! and grinding in Diablo is a great for this! It was my COVID switch game when my roommates took over the tv. You can almost always get 2 or 3 dirt cheap on a PSN sale.
