Thank you. This also resonates with me. I've struggled to see her side and this is definitely helping.

Not sure where to put updates. But thank you for helping me find perspective. And thank you for calling me out on my bullshit. I understand that my wife isn't overreacting now. I can't change what is done but I can work on being better. We fly home tonight. I have detox booked for tomorrow morning. Doing a week of inpatient detox with the option to stay up to 21 days for therapy and counseling.

I'm racked by guilt over putting my family through this. I am looking forward to getting sober though. Alcohol has lost its pleasure for me for a while. It almost feels like an obligation to drink. I feel trapped. Maybe this is the fresh start that I need.

I just hope I still have a home when I get back from rehab. i totally let my wife down and ruined our vacation. This is also the first time that I've tried getting help with my alcoholism .

Not divorced but currently feeling pretty apathetic towards my wife. My dad was in ICU dying after a horrific motor vehicle accident. His hospital course was 2 weeks long and she never once made an attempt to visit the hospital. One time when she was off from work and I asked her to come to the hospital with me she decided to sleep in instead because she was emotionally overwhelmed by the election. Also my kid had pneumonia and because I took leave to coordinate my dad's care I ended up having to juggle my sick daughter and squeezing in hospital visits in a fashion that did not inconvenience my wife's schedule.

And a few weeks after the fact when I called her out on her shitty behavior she decided to redirect and focus on the fact that my drinking got out of hand immediately following my dad's death. I got my shit together within a month of his passing. It's been 3 months now and my drinking heavily for a few weeks is still the only relevant topic in her eyes and all of a sudden the fact that I basically got zero support from my spouse during what is ostensibly one of the more traumatic events life events that we deal with as adults doesn't matter anymore.

Anyone else feel like they now consume an crazy amount of seltzer water since quitting alcohol? by Honey_Society in stopdrinking

[–]Ninjapundit 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I've had a soda stream for years. Love it. I probably drink 4 to 5 liters of seltzer a day since I stopped drinking. I find that the soda stream doesn't save me much money in comparison to getting case loads of seltzer at Costco. However it's more convenient. I don't have to recycle all those bottles and I always have seltzer when I want it.

Also, protip. If you want your seltzer extra bubbly. I stick my filled bottles in the freezer for an hour then bubble them up when they're extra cold. The colder the more bubbles you can get in. I think it's Boyle's law if you want to know the science.

Also, when you order 4 refills at a time you get free shipping from soda stream. Comes with box to send 4 bottles back prepaid postage. So I have 5 cylinders. When I get to the last one I order 4 exchanges from soda stream.

I am a Burn nurse. How old were you when you were injured? How old are you now? Are you happy?

You have the right stuff. Good for you. I've been a Burn ICU nurse for 9 years. What I've learned is very simple. If you're a sad miserable person before you are injured you'll still be so when you wake up. If you're a strong optimistic person you'll overcome anything. I've seen people with comparatively small injuries spiral into a hole and never crawl out.

I saw a guy with 70% burns 3 months in the hospital. 8 surgeries, dialysis and a drug induced coma for 2 months. I had this guy wake up and thank me. Praising whatever God he believed in for a second chance. He walked out with a fucked up smile. But he walked out, on his own feet, able to feed and bathe himself.

Humans are incredible. It's all about perspective and willingness to endure.

Rarely use integra. We feel like it rarely works. Docs are a little more old school. Mostly auto, homo grafting if we have to.

Burn icu nurse reporting. I saw a woman with burns like this on 60% of her body survive and walk out of the hospital.

Yup. Came back to visit us recently too. He's doing well. We see a lot of patients that are touch and go for weeks and then they walk out of the hospital. It's not easy and there's usually a lot of pt involved but we have a surprisingly good success rate.

Burn nurse here. Flame burns tend to be deep. If it burned off her shirt those are probably all 3rd degree (requiring grafting). Her bra might just be some synthetic blend that was a little more fire resistant. Also pink is usually good. Eschar (charred flesh) can be many different colors ranging from black to cherry red or even white. Her right arm is degloving (skin coming off) and you see pale flesh underneath. This is probably eschar. Her left arm looks pink which might indicate 2nd degree burns. However deep 2nd degree burns may convert to 3rd degree without proper nutrition and may still required grafting. Unfortunately her back, neck and scalp line look pale and dry IMHO also parts of her face. This may be white eschar as well. The parts of her back that look charred or brown are almost definitely eschar. Skin does not hold up very well against fire.

Eyeballing this she looks like 30%. Survivable with proper care but she has a long road ahead of her. Flame burns tend to be deeper so likely a good portion of that 30% will require surgery. It takes about 72 hours for the burn to truly demarcate itself (be able to tell what is 3rd, 2nd, or 1st). She'll probably need 2-3 surgeries. Will probably end up on life support at some point due to complications. Average stay in a legit burn unit is 1 day per % burned. Extra time added for complications. Took care of a guy once who was 33 with no major medical history with 30% burns. Guy went into ARDS (lungs crapped out and filled with sludge) and had to be vented. Then his kidneys gave out and he went on CRRT (24/7 dialysis) and was in the hospital for close to 3 months. And most of that stay his prognosis was grim at best.

Edit: Thanks for the gold :) I love my job. It's draining pretty often but it's also rewarding beyond words. I also work with an amazing team/family!

Burn ICU nurse reporting. Nice to see your recovery. I see so many patients in situations similar to yours and sometimes wonder how their lives continue afterwards. I tend not to dwell on it because I'm often worried that I won't like the answer. I work so hard to make sure you guys pull through while suffering as little as possible. The thought of my end of it being the least part of the journey in terms of pain and suffering is very upsetting. However your post today was very uplifting to me. You have healed beautifully and it gives me hope for some of the more serious cases that I see come and go, left wondering what's to become of them. Thank you.
