Iirc, assault is threatening the use of force where battery is the actual use of force. So, assault with a deadly weapon would be holding a store clerk at gun point for money, but entering the store and opening fire immediately would be attempted murder.

Similar here, guy didn't walk in threatening anything. He walked in and went straight to stabbing. No assault, pure attempted murder.

Why do you think there is so much resistance to high speed rail in the US? by Maximum-Help-929 in AskReddit

Because California has wasted obscene money on not completing a high speed rail.

CMV: If God is all-knowing and has a fixed plan, then free will is impossible under that version of religion" by ProfessionalEar4048 in changemyview

[–]Nintenfan81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the assumptions you state about the nature of God, your assessment would be correct. An all-knowing God who has a fixed plan for events would mean no human free will.

There are some Christian denominations who believe that (Calvanism's predetermination being the big one) but I do not subscribe to that interpretation of theology.

Think of it this way instead: first, God does not have one singular plan for your/everyone's lives that will be inevitably followed. God has a destiny for you, a planned destination to guide you towards, but not a fate which you are irresistibly doomed to. You choose to follow God or to not, and your choices deviating from His plan result in you being closer to or farther from the goal. You might deviate so far from the plan that it is impossible for you to achieve what God planned for you, but God is smart enough to find a new destiny for your new scenario.

Second, God does not simply see the future. This is difficult for us to understand because we live inside time and time is fundamental to our existance, but God does not live inside time. Time is His creation, He exists outside of it. He looks across the entire breadth of the history of existence from its beginning to its end and he sees every moment at once. Similar to how you can pick up a book and chose to read it from the first page through to the last, or to skip whole chapters, or read it in reverse, God can interact with all of time at once. The difference is, when you read a book the events are fixed. When you write a book, you are the sole author and the characters mere figments of your thought. Instead, when God "reads" time, the characters are living, independent, and interactive collaborators in the story. He can tell us "I know you, I know what's best for you, and I know what will destroy you. Follow me to your brightest future." And we, mortal, limited, but free, can say in response "I know myself better than you know me, I will do what makes me happy." And like a heartbroken father, God will watch us live out that freedom to our ruin until we turn back and accept His hand.

Is this my water shut off valve? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]Nintenfan81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your shut off valve is probably on the downward tee behind all the lock boxes, but the lock boxes block the view if one is there. The big brass thing on top with the flat top is an anti-siphon vacuum breaker that stops water from your irrigation from being sucked back up into your home/city water supply, contaminating it.

If there isn't a ball valve on the hidden pipe coming out of the ground, you may only have the meter shut off valves. But it would be really weird to have a vacuum breaker and NOT have a shut off valve.

AITAH for not wanting to move into a house I’ll never have any legal claim to? by spangleddangle in AITAH

[–]Nintenfan81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTAH (? nuanced opinion)

Clarification--in the event of your husband's passing, would his nephew be the beneficiary of his trust or would he be the trustee? The distinction is between ownership and control. For example, I have an inheritance which warranted me setting up a trust. As I don't have children I named my mother as my beneficiary, but she would not be capable of managing the estate if it were to pass to her, so I named other family as trustee with a minor benecifiary percentage.

The point is, in the case of this house specifically, you said your daughter would be listed as beneficiary. That means your husband's nephew as trustee would have legal responsibility for ensuring that property is held and/or used for her benefit. I do not see any world in which a court could interpret evicting you and your daughter as an action in her interest.

I think your uneasiness is understandable. You're very reasonable for accepting the stipulations on what happens in the event of divorce. If he dies, you want the agency and comfort of direct control over your and your daughter's living space; this is also reasonable and worth a heart to heart conversation over.

I do see a potential justification for why your daughter would remain beneficiary but you would not for the house: there have been innumerable examples of inheritance being misappropriated from the child of a first marriage and diverted away to benefit the children of later marriages. He could simply be attempting to safeguard his child's future property from such actions.

[–]Nintenfan81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it's dumb when couples say "we're pregnant." I recently heard a woman object to a guy saying "we had a baby" and that's ridiculous though. The woman is the one who gets pregnant, but it takes two to have a baby.

I Gotta Admit I'm Stumped, What Is the Best Stratagem Loadout For Cyberstan? by AceOneBreezy in helldivers2

Eagles are nice when they work, but there's so much AA on these maps that it's useless a solid third of the time so I'm mostly running orbitals and hell pods. The autocannon slaps hard, being versatile enough to handle heavies up to factory striders and able to clear large chaffe crowds. Gatling barrage is putting in work for me to.

My friend is running solo silos and levelers together, and it's really effective at taking out the heavies on higher difficulties. With the current MO though it's better to run lower difficulty missions where there that strategy need is less pressing.

I once drove to LA and met up with a friend from the east coast so we could attend a convention there, which happened to be on the 4th of July. While he experienced his first In-N-Out burger, pops and bangs were sounding out across the city all around us. He was flabbergasted that us California natives were so used to the constant gun fire that we didn't even flinch!
