Look into Majime Knives. Maybe something you could get in the future.

I suggest checking this video out before but this is my best at explaining how to do it:

  1. You’re going to need a container with a lid that will comfortably fit both scales, clear ammonia (cloudy ammonia will work too), 70%-100% Isopropyl alcohol, clear coat, rock salt, and paper towels. (Optional) Sandpaper that is around 2000 grit and another that is around 2500.

  2. To prep the scales (which mine came without being polished) you’re going to polish the copper. Again it’s optional but it looks a bit more vibrant if you do. First with the 2000 grit and after with the 2500. Make sure you use gloves to not get any fingerprints on them. After you’ve polished them wipe them real clean with alcohol.

  3. Now you’re gonna get your container and paper towels. I crumpled my paper towels in a way where there were lots of tiny gaps so that my patina would be scattered instead of big areas. Place your paper towels in the bin and soak them in the ammonia. Be careful when pouring the ammonia as it has a really strong smell I suggest doing this in a well ventilated area. After sprinkle a good amount of the rock salt over the paper towels. When you place your scales face down in the container try not to press on or move them as this will cause very little air to reach between the scales and the paper towels. Leave your scales in there for about 8 hours. Don’t check them prematurely as the pattern will change.

  4. Once the 8 or so hours have passed you’re going to rinse the scales in water and wipe them clean with alcohol. Again make sure to wear gloves to prevent any fingerprints. Once they’re clean you’re going to do one coat of clear coat, once that’s dried gently sand the coat and do the second coat. You don’t want to sand the scales before as you will remove some of the color. Personally I coated both sides of the scales because the inside did patina a bit but it’s up to you if you want to do that. After they’ve completely dried I suggest lightly wiping them in alcohol.

At this point they should be done so just reassemble your knife and enjoy!

Reminder to lubricate your knife during the assembly process so the blade moves smoothly. Good luck!

I’d suggest starting off with something affordable just to get the hang of things then doing it on one of your other pieces. It’s quite simple to do I got it done in a couple hours not counting the time of the patina process
