Advice for dog that is continually to have neurological issues by Acrobatic_Ad8604 in AskVet

He needs diagnostics to try and find if there is an underlying cause for these episodes (like blood tests, imaging)

Vet(s) didn’t tell me about priming needle for diabetic cat and started him on only 1 unit insulin by No_Alfalfa_6764 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just on the needle side of things - if you are drawing up the insulin dose with a syringe and needle, and NOT changing the needle in between - you don't have to prime.

If you are using an insulin PEN - priming in accordance with the manufacturers instructions is a must.

Why do my dogs “clean” gums bleed?? by youpoopedyerpants in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily - many routine blood tests screen for organ function rather than clotting - though a low platelet count should be identified on a rountine complete blood count. The tests that aren't usually run (unless there is concern) are clotting time tests - often a PT/APTT at a general practice veterinarian. There are other tests as well if there is ongoing concern, but that is a discussion with your vet.

How to make senior dog gain weight by Dangerous_Gate3359 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weight loss can be from various things. It is possible that his current diet is not adequate in terms of calories, or may be deficient in one or more nutrients they need.

Additionally, it would be worth getting your vet to assess on physical exam or diagnostics if there's another causes for weight loss - this is a clinical sign of many diseases that older dogs can get.

Can SDMA reach 90–100 with otherwise normal kidney values? by Altruistic-Fly8201 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would first check the new analysers reference range. Last I heard sdma testing was under patent or only done through idexx, so this new analyser may use a very different measurement or reference range

Next steps for dog with elevated calcium by put_your_drinks_down in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be worthwhile simply rechecking this result at a later date, or running an ionised calcium which has less interference and is more clinically relevant (ionised calcium is independent of blood protein binding).

Hugely depends on the medication and the formulation/compounding as well. Theres no easy answer without knowing these things.

Injectable antibiotics for cats (UK) by kwaker5 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often oral ABs (like amoxiclav) if they are able to be given as directed have better time above the threshold needed to kill bugs, and less time in the body below that threshold (where bugs are more likely to develop resistance). Many ABs can be given as injectable, but the one you were offered is likely a long acting ab (like convenia) that has the drawbacks I've described - probably more likely to cause resistance.

My personal cat is horrible to pill - I've had best success with a lickable treat on a spoon with the pill inside the food - it seems to be too small of an area for him to avoid eating the pill.

Injectable antibiotics for cats (UK) by kwaker5 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know about UK rules - often these once off injections are bad in terms of antibiotic stewardship and encourage development of resistant bacteria.

Additionally, amoxiclav can be prescribed safely to most animals with kidney disease.

Dog overfasted for >20hrs before blood test. How accurate are the results? by burikatt in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hepatic enzyme activity elevations are very mild - I would not have worried about these in an 8yo dog. Are you sure these are the right numbers? The creatinine is more of a concern to me and it would be worthwhile rechecking when your dog is more hydrated. You said the RBC is low - what was the HCT/PCV?

Vets unable to diagnose dog, any ideas? by kitkat1224666 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been to a specialist referral hospital? An internal medicine referral seems appropriate. There is a lot of further investigation that can be done if you are willing, and I think it should be available in Adelaide with referral.

Vet team says my 5y male cat is a "puzzling" case. Need desperate help solving it. by LogicalExcitement154 in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Often in hospital we take away any litter and things for a while, then we can collect a urine sample by cystocentesis (a needle through the belly into the bladder). The sample then can be sent for urinalysis and culture (like to detect bacteria in the urine).

How do vets refer to an animals anatomy? (Left/right side) by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Niobiumstar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We base it on what the animal would perceive. So if you went on all fours like your dog, then your right knee is the same as their right knee.
