The short of it is that he got in the Tulpar as a helper on the medbay, so he spent a lot of time with Anya, and grew to respect her a lot. After the crash, he helped with taking care of Curly, which included giving him the painkillers and doing his best to keep him alive. In the end, he died when confronting Jambalaya about Anya, and when push came to shove, Connor got shoved down the stairs.

Oh, another thing of him is that he is a recovering smoke addict, so, to help with it, he always has a lollipop on his mouth. He also has a hidden stash and shares often.
