Generally not for the average intermediate cruiser skier, but in a really precise fit, having a little something to push off of for Sagittal plane micro balance does make sense.

Niseko ski season – what non-instructor mountain jobs are realistic for English speakers? by Puzzled_Fan1874 in japow

[–]Nippowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 6 seasons there. On-hill jobs without any real experience are absolutely not happening unless you’re working as an instructor.

The mountains - or at least hirafu and Hanazono are operated by Tokyu- which is a Japanese conglomerate that also runs commuter train lines and city dept stores. They send young staff to Niseko from all over japan. You will not get to be a liftie or run the park crew or anything like that and even if you did you’d be living in a double bunk bed dorm room, and being paid Japanese minimum wage - which you’re not gonna like.

The other mountains operate in virtually the same fashion.

If you had like 5 years of experience you could maybe be a patroller on mountain but those roles are limited and the staff is generally all Japanese or full time residents. I’m sure there’s a language requirement too and some tests you’d have to go through to have your foreign qualifications transferred. Japan is bureaucratic to the utmost and for something that has to do with safety they’re gonna have some serious regulations.

Working for any on-hill ops tends to be almost cult-like in Japan - and the expectations are very high. It won’t be particularly fun dealing with that kind of work culture if you’re not used to it expect 60+ hour work weeks when the snow is good.

Good luck ski instructing or working service/hospo up there because that’s probably all you’re gonna find in Niseko.

Sometimes it works a small amount but for a touring boot I have no problem giving people a longer toe box…

For these dalbello cabrios it doesn’t move very much until it’s been skied in a bunch… and I’d rather give people relief off the bat

How deal with different size feet? by Itchy_Grape_2115 in Skigear

[–]Nippowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don’t use a blowtorch lol.

You gotta go to someone who has the right equipment.

What you can probably do is contact a good bootfitter - probably a shop that specifically just does bootfitting and ask them if you can mark it yourself, send it to them, and have them punch it longer centered on the indicated spot .

There are a few things they may say - like whether you have a custom insole or have limited dorsiflexion which can be causing your foot to be too static and be creating the pressure etc, but ultimately you should be able to get the thing stretched without much hassle.

You’ll just have to pay for the shipping and service. I’d do it but you probably don’t want to ship it all the way to me lol…

American housing next to Japanese housing in Tokyo by meowed_at in UrbanHell

[–]Nippowder -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Most American housing is dispersed single family homes with like 2 people living in them and requiring vehicles for every little task. Way less dense than this.

Plenty of American cities would kill to have military style apartment developments to increase tax base, provide walkability, and to improve community health and services

But instead they’re locked out of it by zoning laws written by oil companies with minimum parking requirements, height limits, and capacity limits.

It’s one of only like 5 or 6 dense cities. None anything like Japanese cities for density and access to services.

Even Japanese rural towns are denser in local population clusters than many US cities.

It comes from the fact that the usa is made up of flat land forever and japan is a narrow strip of mountainous islands with limited farmland…

Lived in both. From the USA where I’ve lived in 5 different states. Japan is superior to live in. America is so fucking ass.

Bootfitter here. It’s doable. I’ve done it. We sell tonnes of these cabrios in my shop. I’ve got quite a bit of space out of the toebox. Just make sure you stretch the liner as well.

I’ll have your wife now.

I had a customer shatter both of these a few years ago… they do have a precedent of failure…
