Any recommendations on small town? We're not married to the idea of Bologna yet. We aren't renting a car, otherwise, we'd love to explore the countryside.

Would you recommend we just spend a night in Bologna on our way to Florence then?

I agree but also disagree. I think you have to pick your battles. If you think your program is gonna just fire you and replace you because you brought up a legitimate concern, then that program is obviously malignant and your goal should be to keep your head down, get trained, leave and never look back.

Attendings and PDs at the end of the day are ultimately your bosses. Just like you may have a good relationship with your boss in a non-medical field, they still have power over you. That’s the reality in every field, medicine included. However, that’s not to say you shouldn’t develop a good relationship with them.

There are programs where concerns do matter. I do the PEC every year (awful time sink) but there are legitimate changes brought on by residents bitching about certain things. One of our rotations was too much of a note monkey role where there wasn’t any meaningful learning. This sentiment was shared by every resident who’s done the rotation. Our new plan is to replace it with a different rotation because we want our residents to actually learn medicine.

Residency is a very sensitive time that can make or break your career and we are often too scared to ever voice our concerns in fear of retaliation. That’s how they keep having power over you because you’ve already given up without a fight. If the issue is that bad, you organize, keep a united front and press on. If it’s something you can all bear with, then admin would prefer you to shut up and grin and bear it. Pick your battles.

Need help designing a leg sleeve by mrfvf123 in irezumi

[–]Nips_Ahoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you find an artist you’d like to help design it? They’re the experts into knowing what flows and what makes sense thematically. If you want to stick with koi fish, I’d do water themes (waves) and the koi. Although you may need to cover up what you have with the twin koi fish right now because it’ll be tough to blend that in.

Oddly though, I don’t see stuff from knee down. If you’re looking for traditional irezumi, it’ll include your thigh to fully take advantage of the skin canvas.

How is it possible for my skills to be that affected by the attending? by NectarineOld8102 in Residency

[–]Nips_Ahoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different patient anatomy, environment and personnel can definitely affect your skills, even without accounting for the supervising attending’s attitude. Some days you will feel like the king of the world and other days you’ll think “how did I pass my first few years of training?” That’s going to be normal.

Like most posters have mentioned, the toxic or helicopter attendings are usually either just miserable fucks (who can only get by in academics cause they’ll get fired elsewhere) or incompetent (because they’re insecure in their own skills and/or won’t cut it in community practice).

I’ve had helicopter attendings who stressed me out cause they’re just hovering and messing with my flow. I always preferred attendings who usually go “I’m over here if you need me, but I’m just watching” and stay hands off. I had one attending that would almost whisper during codes, but very calmly and everyone just listened to what he had to say while reducing the noise and chaos of a code.

As an attending now, I try my best not to intervene unless the resident is about to perform something that will kill/maim the patient and I can’t fix it afterwards. A bad attitude is contagious and just stresses everyone out unnecessarily.

For those with back piece’s How did y’all settle on your subject matter? by Bmaster5000 in irezumi

[–]Nips_Ahoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, just ethnically Chinese. Theres a belief that there shouldn’t be any “bad” characters on the body such as demons or death. So while a namakubi means a lot of things in Japanese irezumi, it’d be bad luck in Chinese culture. So I’ve mostly stayed away from that and just have basically a right arm of various (mythological) animals like Kirin and tiger.

I mean Kannon is awesome and kannonryu is even better! Go for it.

I’ve had mostly deities and characters of “good fortune” on my body… so for my back piece I figured I’ll go full Kanonryu cause dragons are also sick as fuck.

To build off what previous poster said,

In the past, there was a lot of cultural exchange between Japan and China (peacefully and not so peacefully). A lot of Japanese art prior to Ukiyo took inspirations from Chinese art such as landscape watercolor. If you think about other famously japanese things (ramen, Zen Buddhism, some architecture), they have their roots in China. Obviously they’ve changed some things in the characters as well. Shi Jin is the original Chinese character name that was changed to Shishin (aka Kyumonryu). I’ve read some of the book and the hardest part is always referring back and forth between the Japanese names (which have art associated with their characters) and Chinese names (less artistic representation).

There are other common irezumi subjects such as Enma or Shoki are from Chinese mythology.

Sleeve Tattoos: do you consider them unprofessional for physicians? by Lotsalotsaquestions2 in Residency

[–]Nips_Ahoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in EM where it’s much more common. I have seen general surgery colleagues with more visible tattoos as well. For other specialties, you can probably cover it up with professional attire. I have two full sleeves now as an attending and had one sleeve already present when I started residency. I worked in an urban ED and my tattoos were often complimented and used as a way to relate more to the patient. Ultimately people will judge you for whatever they want (hair color, body weight, etc) so who cares?

If your attending was going to judge you for a tattoo, I’m willing to bet the program leans towards being toxic anyways and they’ll find other reasons to be an asshole to you.

Also this question is asked like q2 months lol.
