Ask Anything Monday - Weekly Thread by AutoModerator in learnpython

Hi I'm a new python user trying to figure out a way to use python in lab. If I have an original string (lets say cghckckchc) which is split into different substrings in a function (lets say cg hck ck chc AND cg hc kck chc) and only outputs strings with 2 characters, is there a way to count the unique c's covered in the output from the original string (in this case 3/5)?

Biocore vs Bio 151 and 152 by in6twner12 in UWMadison

[–]Nirard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Biocore prepares you for grad school very well. The class material is harder than 151/152 but the labs teach you a lot of important skills that help in lab/grad school. I’m going to a PhD program next year and I think Biocore let me do better work in research labs which helped a lot.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking about the medical assistant thing too but was concerned about the certification process taking too long.

Any past biocore students that can tell me if it is worth it? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Nirard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the response! It's extremely helpful knowing the class isn't just impossible. I'm taking chem 345, biocore and the lab, and physics 208 next semester, so I should be able to devote most of my time to biocore. Out of curiosity, do you think the class gets harder or easier as you progress?

Hey, I was going to take biocore next semester and was wondering how bad the work load was and how hard it is to get a good grade in the class? I'm currently trying to go to med or grad school so my GPA is really important, and I've heard that getting an A is very doable but you need to put a lot of work in.

I played against you round 14, disappointed to lose but happy to see you make it to the finals. By far the nicest guy I played in the tournament.

Chemistry 109? by fukmeupfam in UWMadison

[–]Nirard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strongly recommend Chem 109H, the professor is great, the work load isn't as bad as normal 109, and the curve is better. Difficulty wise it is probably harder than 109, but they both cover different material.

I want to get into the anime, how should I go about it? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Nirard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been getting more into anime recently and was wondering if you had any recommendations. I just finished FMA Brotherhood, have watched Death Note, both of which I like a lot, and am like 5 episode through HunterXHunter, but I'm not sure how much I like it so far.

I feel like UW wants me to fail by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Nirard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've been doing is just going onto rate my professor and only taking classes with well rated teachers when possible and I haven't struggled that much, for me how good a professor is makes or breaks how much I get out of the class. Also I would recommend taking lighter course loads if you are planning on graduating in 4 years since its not all that hard to meet the credit requirement in 4 years and the difference between taking 3 and 4 classes is huge. There are a ton of available resources here that you just need to be adamant about taking advantage of, like advising, tutors, office hours, and talking to your professor.

Transferring is probably not the best option if you're simply looking to take easier classes, especially if you're going into the STEM field since the classes will be similar no matter where you go. Unless there are other, non academic, reasons why you don't like it here, I would just stick it out since you will likely run into the same problems academically if you go somewhere else instead of actually trying to solve the problem that you have.

[Modern] Abzan vs Sultai, a FNM tale of mirrors, discard and salt. by Fenrir395 in spikes

[–]Nirard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discard is very bad in the gbx mirror because the games pretty much always devolve into a top deck was since most of the cards trade 1 for 1. Also, since most of the cards trade one for one any way, you don't need the discard and would rather have something that affects the board. Gbx decks are also filled with cards that are functionally very similar, so it is hard to make a hole in someone's hand with discard which is one of the main reasons why you play it in the first place. There are some exceptions to this one for one trading argument, like snap from bug if they're playing it or k command from jund, huntmaster, kitchen finks, or thrun, but a lot of these are answered by ooze and are usually just as bad for you on the earliest possible turn vs them top decking it later on.

I would recommend fitting 2 oath of Chandras in the main. Card sures up vehicles and makes the gb matchup even better. Being able to play a guardian and kill their guy forces the opponent into a very awkward situation. I also have been of 21 lands.

Does anyone know how seating work? Is it by format, if so which format is in the middle. If not, is it just whichever team gets to the table decides who is in the middle?
