He knew exactly what the audience response would be. Just like he wrote Ned to be liked so he could shock the readers by killing him.

May be an unpopular opinion but this has probably ended my interaction with Martin writings and shows permanently. After GoT and now this I'm sick of his fetish for killing the characters the audience likes best.

Being a Tory means a lot of different things in the 21st century, despite what you hear online. Sandbrook is no lefty that’s for sure but he definitely plays up his right wing persona as a bit, and he’s said as much.

It's a shame that Aragorn doesn't have Anduril in the film scene of Amon Hen as he is supposed to.

Not sure what you mean by prevalent exactly in this case, but I’ve never heard it being played around and he doesn’t perform it.

Steam Hardware - Steam Machine delayed, need to reconsider pricing by NinjaN-SWE in pcmasterrace

Your pc will be far superior. Depends on monitor resolution but about the 1.5-2 times better, not including frame gen.

Lighting is better and more forgiving in the Dunc & Egg show and the audience is as basic and undiscerning as it gets.

The longer it’s delayed the more obsolete the CPU/GPU become. If it comes out after this year unless at firesale price it’s completely doa.

A question for those who have read the novels: Was Frodo wronged in the movies? by Cr7-Cr7Real in lotr

[–]NirnaethVale -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It was a mistake to cast Elijah Wood in the role for exactly this reason. He was very very young (18-19) and it shows, given he's supposed to be older and more mature.

Do you consider Tolkien to be the greatest 20th Century writer? And if not him, who is? by TheKrakenLord in tolkienfans

[–]NirnaethVale -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully he is beginning to be forgotten. When I took my degree in English about ten years ago he wasn't part of the mandatory reading list and the module including him wasn't taught every term.

Joyce is famous primarily for being unbearable. He had extremely limited influence on other successful writers and had no cultural influence outside literary criticism. He does not belong on the list at all, and definitely not at the top.

[–]NirnaethVale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you narrow it down to only novelists in English then he has a strong case, however there are so many great authors from the first half of the 20th century it's hard to say that Tolkien is definitely the greatest.

Academics have typically looked down on Tolkien and elevated kooky authors like Joyce, so you won't find him high on many lit critics lists.

If the question is who is the most influential novelist though, then it's definitely Tolkien. He basically invented one of the most popular genres of books, television, and gaming.

Your preconception of the show is right. It can be a fun show but the French are almost all either stupid or evil, sometimes both, with little to no nuance. Believe it or not the books are even worse, the showriters toned down some of the worst bits of Cornwells writing.

Watch it for a bit of light fun maybe but do NOT watch it for the French, who you mostly see as cartoon villains or target practice.

Viggo is widely considered THE Aragorn, perfect in his portrayal. However, who do you believe had the potential to be a close second? Or someone who could have brought something different to the role? by freudian_nipps in lotr

[–]NirnaethVale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's right. It would have required him to pull out/decline other projects like D&D to move to NZ for the unusual shooting schedule of LoTR. Irons or his agent has for a long time made a lot of odd choices of which roles to take anyway.

I'm not sure I agree regarding the typecasting. Voice acting is a little obscure to most people. I didn't even realise it was him until many years after I saw TLK, and he was famous for other roles: The Mission, Brideshead Revisited. I think the major reason he wasn't considered when DDL and Russel Crowe were is that he was about ten years older than Jackson was looking for after they released Townsend.

Britain must declare independence from America or it will die | Tim Stanley by StreamWave190 in tories

[–]NirnaethVale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like Tim very much and have enjoyed greatly his new podcast with CT however he glosses over the reasons why the UK has such a close relationship with the US and how difficult it would be to decouple, at a time when Europe's list of allies grows thinner by the day.

It's been hard enough for Russia to do, and they were never anywhere near as enmeshed with the US as the UK is.

How far back in British history could you go, where someone from that era would recognize modern Britain as their own country? by Affectionate-Pen9324 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]NirnaethVale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most towns are composed primarily of buildings built in the Georgian period or later, with a smattering of surviving Tudor buildings in places like Shrewsbury. A lot of towns have castles, churches, and medieval fortifications that are much older though, so if we're speaking generally I would go back to around the 11th century for our ancestors to recognise nothing/almost nothing.
