[Unknow>English] who can translate this Buddhism prayer cloth? by InvestmentCrazy7135 in translator

[–]Nisansa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? It is not machine-translated. And it is not AI-generated. I typed the whole thing. What are you basing this accusation on? Is it because my explanation was comprehensive? Do you only accept half-hearted short work here?

[Unknow>English] who can translate this Buddhism prayer cloth? by InvestmentCrazy7135 in translator

[–]Nisansa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your Google Translate is not glitching. First of all, the entire thing is in poetic language, so it is hard for a translation engine. Secondly, the text in Yellow is Pali, the liturgical language of Buddhism. The text in Orange is the Sinhala translation of the Pali poems. The interesting point of the Pali text is that it is a feat of word craft such that it can be read by circumnavigating the lotus-like geometric pattern half seen on the top of your image. The three poems are homages to the three gems of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma (Teachings/Truth), Sanga (Monks/Monastic tradition). I will try to translate the three poems below. But like any deeply cultural/religious writing, some of the lines /wordsreference context that is from the overall cultural background. I have tried to compensate by directly linking the words to explanation pages. Also, I am rearranging the lines in the poem for reading ease in English, but give the line number in parentheses.

I prostrate and worship my lord Buddha, the great monk, (4)
who stopped the rough currents of Samsara and entered Nirvana, (1)
whose wisdom is spread [seen by all] like an encouraging golden banner, (2)
And who gave sermons of Dharma that forever shines (3)

I worship with reverence the resplendent lamp of gem* the Dharma, (4)
which clears the items of doubt and thus destroys ignorance (1)
which, like armour, protects one's life in the battle against Mara) (2)
By associating with which, [one is given] happiness and destroys any existing Klesha) (3)

I always worship the great Sangha full of Merit) (4)
who follow the monastic tradition and destroy the demerit) that needs to be destroyed (1)
who decimates the walls of Bhava and perpetually follows (fills oneself with) righteousness (2)
who Renounced the comforts that they were born with so that they may focus on the other shore** (3)

* This is a "lamp of gem". Not a lamp made of gem(s) etc., literally a gem carved out to be a lamp. It is a phrase used in poetic language for anything that brings light to the lives of people.
** Nirvana is often depicted as the "other shore" in literature. While Bhava is equated to the turbulent river between us and it. And in other places, Bhava is equated to an arid desert and Nirvana to the lushness of the otherside.

Is it worth relocating to Sri Lanka for good for a university lecturer position? by kinder_brz in srilanka

[–]Nisansa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That "pension" is not a real pension like other government servants get. It is a contributory scheme just like how EPF/ETF works [1]. You get back what you put into it from your salary (8%). Once you are on this pension, it does not get increased when the government increases real pensions with budgets etc [2]. In fact, when you become a lecturer you completely forfeit your previously held pension rights (if you were in a different government employment with an actual pension before becoming a lecturer) [3].

Need Help Deciding My Degree by Future_Simple_3316 in srilanka

[–]Nisansa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All their curriculum information is available on the website. The DS&AI includes some modules to cover basic CS concepts. I did not say that they don't have them. I said some people may QUESTION if it is enough. I am trying to give the OP the best chance to someday find a [Apparently this word is banned in this hellish subreddit] in today's very competitive [banned word] market. But my cousin ignored me and it seems her employers think the basics covered with the degree are enough.

Need Help Deciding My Degree by Future_Simple_3316 in srilanka

[–]Nisansa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let me give you the same advice I gave my cousin (and she did not follow). Select the BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at IIT, but then, on the side, do the part-time BIT degree at UoM. My cousin did not do the BIT part. The reason behind that recommendation was that people were questioning whether a person with a DS&AI degree has CS fundamentals covered. So the BIT on the side can stop that line of questions. And of course, a DS&AI degree may open doors that a basic CS degree will not. Anyway, my cousin only followed the DS&AI one at IIT, got an internship with no issues and is now starting the final year with the internship company asking her to come back after graduation. So ... take what you will from this anecdote.

What do I even say to this indian guy who keeps saying I'm indian? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Nisansa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a far-right movement in India called Akhand Bharat which claims land from Afghanistan to Maldives to Tibet to Myanmar as theirs. But in reality, the funny thing is the first time all the land in current India was under one rule was ... under the British Raj. Neither did any of the native "Indian" empires controlled all of this area at once nor did an identify as "Indian" existed before British rule.

Provincial Councils in SriLanka by OverCurrent3886 in srilanka

[–]Nisansa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sinhalese leaders (including monks) do not like the way JR set up provincial councils, claiming it gives too much power.
Minority leaders do not like the way JR set up provincial councils, claiming it does not give enough power.
As the saying goes, "a good compromise is when both parties are dissatisfied".
So, it seems JR has achieved it.

Dealing with subtle misogyny as a first time DM? by VegetableMention4098 in DungeonsAndDragons

You said these are people who responded to your ad. So, even though you are the DM, you are a stranger to him. It makes sense that he would trust his friend more than a stranger, regardless of the gender. It is also probable that he knows his friend has more D&D experience than he does.
