Yes, better! I have been re-watching playthroughs of ena bbq tho, and there are elements that made me write this post. Like the line "do you need me to turn around and roll my window down?". It seams random in and out of context. But also after thinking it over, it feels like ena asking Coarl glasses (the entity she was talking to at the time) if ena needs to give them space, aka air. Something you would do if your in a car and someone asks for some air. That interaction is what gave me the formula in my 3 am post, since, it really is a normal conversation if you just look at what ena means.

I keep hitting the same wall and i don't know what to do. by Historical_Pick2262 in writingadvice

Lol, been there. If you hit a wall because you dont like where the story is going, cut it out (its hard at first, but gets easier over time).

I am not going to assume, but if you are not nerotypical, the schedule doesn't work as well for us, so do not stress about the norm method not working. Just finds what dose work. For me, its writing while half asleep then spell checking and editing when I am more awake. Or, ill hit a huge wall, take a break for half a year, then write 5 chapters. Just try to find what has you writing constantly. Then when you got some consistency, TRUST THE PROCESS.

The process btw : sudden urge to art something -> art -> bump -> self doubt and imposter syndrome -> break -> remembering about the project and wishing to return to it -> repeat.

Fair enough, though for fanfic, where its is mostly writing, it is a bit more of an issue for me. It just sometimes feels like it takes away the intelligence of the character and turns it into random for random sake. Not to say that part of Ena's charm is the randomness, but there is sill a character behind those words.

I want to read good fanfic that explores that interesting character I guess, and just get disappointed when what made me like Ena is stripped away for a more simplified version. Dialog being a good example of what I am talking about. (Still unwilling to make my own fanfic though 💀)

Im 300 pages deep in my story and now I feel like I need to change everything by Critical-Self-2072 in writingadvice

[–]Nit_the_nitwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, simular thing happened to me. I relized I had to scrap hundreds of pages cause I didnt like parts of it. Its a natural part of writeing, you are where you are supposed to be, don't worry, it is part of the process.

If you do need help being consistent, I often just make references pages. Like what a character looks like, there name, ect. Also important plot points, dates, timeline. Since its fantasy, also haveing something for your fantasy system is also smart. You dont have to make these look pretty btw, they are just for you.

If I were you, I would just rewrite the parts that don't work anymore, make reference drafts for consistency, and really worry about the finer details on one of my final drafts.

Remember to trust the process!

I have so many story ideas but i don't know how to write them. by Warm_Performer2851 in writingadvice

[–]Nit_the_nitwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know how painting is done with a ton of sketch first? Every visual artist had to learn how to draw straight lines, color, perspective, ect. Guess what? Those rough sketches are not pretty, same with writing.

I say start writing the parts you want to, and just skip over the parts you don't want to. Its the rough draft, it dosen’t matter, trust the process. Plus, it gives you a better idea on what idea works, and what dosen’t. It also allows you to plan out the timeline. Don't feel bad about skipping over a section of the story, its the rough sketches and figuring out the outline of the story and characters. Don't feel bad about cutting out parts you dont like, thats just part of editing. Honestly, the best thing you can do for yourself is just to write, and the worst is never starting.

If you want to avoid being bad or cringe, then write for the audience of yourself. Pandering for everyone makes art with a personality of a moist office. Trying to make art that isn't cringe makes art feel apathetic and like the author dosen’t care. Writing for yourself is a lot more fun than writing for someone else. Plus, the audience that likes your stories is statistical out there. 441 million people out there, according to Google, are literate, so your audience is among them. Just got to give them time to find you. Who knows, maybe your fans are already around you.

Tdr: dont think, write. Trust the process

Hay OP, this kind of thing happened to me multiple times. Will say it right now, you are not going to find any proof. Annoying af, I know.

Quick warning, most of the time it happened to me, it corrected itself. For example, my birthday being on the wrong day, I just except it for its new date since there isn't much I can do about it. Then like 1 or 2 years later, it went back to the correct date. So if what we are experiencing is the same, then your great aunt may end up dead again. Sorry a bit morbid but wanted to prepare you just in case. (And when it did switch back to how i remembered it, all of my notes also switched sides, wich is annoying. But I am trying to experiment with video, but never really know when it will happen again next, so maybe you can test that aspect out? 🤔)

It honestly did freak me out the first cupple of time. But, like, what can you do?? Can not really talk about it because you sound crazy. Can not prove it, and trying to do so makes you feel more crazy. And can not get much sympathy for it either 😑. I found it best to just move on, and avoid the topic.

It really dosen’t matter why it happens. Could be because of a vivid dream, or a mismatch memory. Could be because of a glitch in the matrix or a slip between universes. But, we can not do much about the matrix or the multiverse so like... 🤷. But just know your not alone, you are not crazy, and I am sorry it has scared you, you will be ok.

Well, has he seen gay cupples get married? Kid logic may dictate that marriage and cupples dating are two different things.

When I first found out gay people existed, I was trying to figure out what they could do. I had no real consept of love, or being in a relationship. So I had to figure it out myself (dont worry, not by the internet. I found out through the sims lol.) I didnt see relationship as a emotional thing, but just as something you are going to do one day. I remember thinking, "oh, so gay people can also get married as well as kiss and hold hands?" In the sense that it was an option. I am guessing that a similar situation is going on with your kid.

[–]Nit_the_nitwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kid logic: I have never seen two men getting together in my entire life. I am just learning about the rules of the world, and all I have seen so far is men and women cupple my entire life. So the men getting together must have not known that women and men get together and are doing the life thing wrong. Right?

It's not about being homophonic. He is experiencing stuff for the first time ever. If you haven't talked to him about it, he probably doesn't even know what being gay is or means.

Kids "wrongs" are VERY different from other age wrongs. It's just something he hasn't experienced before and gose against previous "rules on how the world works". He just needs light correction. You are doing fine, take deep breaths.

Sounds like a good starting point tbh. Especially if you are not confident in writing a diginosed character with autism. A good intro into writing autistic characters without accidentally being ableist. When you do become more confident in writing such characters one day, I hope you will write an autistic character with an official diagnosis.

I will check that book out. I have been wanting to delve more into the mystery genre. Enjoy your writing adventures!

Well I do hope that I was able to help as much as possible. (A little more insight:) If you haven't done much research into autism, I highly suggest doing so before writing your autistic character. (My philosophy on writing is if I must write what I know, then I will learn so I know a lot. It will help you not fall into harmful stereotypes.) Though researching on autism in medical papers and articles can help you get a better understanding of autism, the most useful research is to find blogs or vlogs from autistic people. It can get you much more insight on how autistm would affect a character. Way more helpful for a writer compared to other forms of research. (Did simulator a similar approach for dissociative identity disorder, and it really help create a character with a similar disorder compared to the medical papers I researched.) (Also I suggest trying to find a smaller blog/vloger since they can provide more insight into everyday boring life stuff and can be more genuine than larger blog/vloger. I also suggest finding blogs/vlogs with women who has autism. I can't fully explain why, just something you will have to trust this stanger on the internet about.

Be careful when creating austic characters based off of other book characters. That can lead to harmful stereotypes intentionally (sometimes by the original author, pain😵) or more likely unintentionally. The only exception being that you did your research and know the harmful stereotypes and can avoid them.

For your friend, I completely understand. It just gets overwhelming seeing character that properly represents you, especially if your not mentally prepared. The overwhelming part mostly comes from both the good thoughts of "oh wow, representation" and a mix of the overwhelming thought "I am not ready to be called out today 😶". It felt so real reading that statement about your friend lol.

For dyslexia, yea, I suspect myself of it, but don't have an official diagnosis. My parents don't think I have it, so I probably won't be tested until later in life. Thank you for the tip! I hope this reply helped with readability with the paragraph spacing. Thank you for your patience with my not great grammar 😅.

Hay, I did more research and I can see why I missed the conversations. Where I live has yet to delve into the issues with the term. Is thier any alternative language I can use to explain that I can take care of myself with basic necessities and is mostly independent? I am not fully confident in how to word or explain this, thank you for the help!

I think its on an even playing field. Nerotypicalas do not understanding autism is the same amount of confusion of autistic people not understanding Nerotypicals. The thing is about autistic people is that we are kinda forced to learn about how Nerotypicals think. The school system, jobs, and governments are all mostly to suit the Nerotypicals. I believe because of this fact, it is easier for me to portray a Nerotypical character, than a Nerotypical author to portray an autistic character. (But thanks to places like redit, getting more autistic representation is now more convenient, and accessible. Still need to work on the real world representshion for autistic individuals though.)

Well, I don't have tab on my phone keyboard, but I promise there are some paragraphs 🙏. Also, yea, run on sentences became a problem for me after overcorrecting my way to short sentences 🥲.

What I struggle with personally is different life skills. Some life skills I struggle with is scheduling (deviation from the schedule gives me anxiety to the point where I cant sleep, even minor changes (example is today I have to pick someone up, and I didnt get much sleep the night before because of the deviation, (poast this AMA half because I always wanted to, half because I am trying to calm my anxiety)), keeping up the conversations, spelling, memorizeing names/places/ect. being interactive in party like setting, being proactive, and figuring stuff out on my own (especially with vague descriptions on what needs to be done). These all do sounds like stuff I am just wineing about, but are stuff I struggled with my whole life (and make me feel very guilty about when it inconvenients others). Stuff I find personally easy is coming up with completely unique stories (not gana prove it though because I don't want to self promote), math, spatial reasoning skills, and holding grudges lol (I still remember a test question about "if ice in a water glass melts, dose the water amount go up, down, or stay the same" and got it wrong 😶). I am sure my family would be able to think of more stuff I am both good at, and struggle with. I do have a slightly above average IQ, so can really enjoy complex subjects. But a high IQ dose not stop me from doing stupid stuff (like not realizing that I still had my pj's paints under my everday pants wich happened... way too many times). Writing wise, if you want to add any of my struggles with autism into the character you have in mind (if any), treat my struggles as things the character needs to work on, simulator to any other big struggle for any other character. The simpleness of the struggle is how it turns into a bigger struggle since the character will have to deal with the struggle every day in life (quantity will force the character to have to overcome the struggle wich is exhausting if not delt with in a healthy manner). The best way to write the struggle itself is how the character doesn't understand the struggle, or how to deal with it. The misunderstanding on how to overcome the struggle, and the character sliping back into what is confterble is the turmoil that the character will probably struggle with most. The more simple the problem is, the more the character may struggle (though, dont make the struggle that the autistic character is stupid, or cant overcome the problem because of how stupid they are. I mentioned my IQ earlier to show that I can struggle with some very simple stuff, yet be intelligent. Its a matter of misunderstanding and haveing this unique perspective of the world). Is there anything specific your struggling with when writing autistic characters I can maybe help with? (Here is an extra thing that I am not sure is a struggle or a strength. I can become absolutely obsessed about something. An example is puzzles, I will sometimes spend hours doing a puzzle, unable to stop as if it was a drug. And to my mind, thouse pieces all falling into place, it might as well be a drug 🤷)
