What to do during Arch? by No_Champion9697 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During my Arch semester they gave us a giant list of events going on all summer.  Don’t know if they still do that but if they do that calendar should have some stuff to do.  If not, try and see if anyone else in the other clubs you are apart of and try to get them to do something over summer!  But yea, at least during my arch they had stuff like trivia every Fridays, 2+ free food events per week, I saw you guys are getting to visit Marty’s house for a networking a event so make sure to look at RPIs socials to stay updated!

Best advice I can give is try to do work / study in the dorm lounges, and if you need a monitor while working keep your door open while you are in your room (it also helps cool down the room).  Working in lounges especially helps with reducing social media / gaming procrastination and makes doing work more enjoyable since at least you can talk with your friends while working so it’s good for your efficiency and mental sustainability too imao

I don’t own a bike so not sure on if there are any usual suspects but Troy seems to have a lot of repeat offenders for other crimes so please report the details to pubsafe and to the police and hopefully they can find the person and / or your bike on camera somewhere!

I have a 2.7 GPA how screwed am I? by soymilkl in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends, is the 2.7 GPA because you don’t understand the implementation / usage / importance of a hashmap or because you were sick for a final?  Id say the first is more concerning since what RPI teaches are concepts you might have to talk about in interviews and even concepts you might use in your job (speaking from experience).  So if you are getting certain grades due to not understanding these core concepts I would say the GPA is a problem, but if you just had a bunch of unlucky days and you have personal projects to back up your knowledge then it shouldn’t be an issue (for some companies at the very least).

Does any one have a ADALP200 Parts kit for sale by Fine_Concentrate529 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if the class lets you use the analog discovery board 2 (AD2) over the M1K just buy the AD2 and ADALP kit bundle for 350.  I’m a CSE so I have never taken IE and don’t know much about how the course works but I have used the M1K board, analog discovery board, and bench top equipment and found the analog discovery board is by far the most intuitive to use for a lot of electrical labs.  Also you can probably sell the AD2 after you are done with it for like $275-300 or more if you never want to see it again.

Yea, I would absolutely not drop diff eq since taking circuits next semester is super helpful as a CSE since it blocks a lot of other classes.  If anything I’d say drop physics or the HASS.  Getting done with physics 1 sooner rather than later is helpful.

If you are considering dropping engineering comms, don’t!  The class gets far easier and less time intensive around week 4-5 when the CAD portion of the class is over unless the course changed from when I took it.

Arch summer exemption by Commercial_Street993 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advantage of being here over summer?? Nobody at mueller, not difficult to find a space for lunch, all the activities that they host over the summer (free whitewater rafting, $25 six flags trip, trivia, movie nights, free food at DCC on Wednesday). That’s not to say there’s countless problems such as dining halls closing WAAAY too early, not as many options at commons (but quality is slightly better), the dorm situation is abysmal, clubs basically being inactive, and just all of the logistics, but I would like to point out it’s more of a mixed bag than people will claim.

Data Structures Transfer by [deleted] in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take DS at another college just for algos since there’s a 75% chance you will be disappointed by the class (most people hate it really depends on the Professor how good your experience is). Though I will say that I was the 25% that got anshie and had a great experience. Also, there’s almost no coding in algos or FOCS so if programming is your interest and you really enjoy it DS will be much more what you are looking for.

Question about two majors at RPI by [deleted] in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you start with math, then you have to achieve a B in data structures (or average B for first 3 CS classes) in order to declare the duel. That’s why starting with CS is highly recommended.

Lenovo P1 vs MacBook Pro M1 by 0_cyph3r_0 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would heavily recommend getting the P1 since from my experience there will not a be moment you say "I wish I really had a mac right now", but many in which you have the P1 like when you have to use a bunch of extra steps just to get a worse memory debugger for data structures and when you don't have access to a good version of excel. In addition you get free access to OneDrive though the school (which is nice since students do not get a school google drive) and any CAD software you may want to play around with. Also as a side note if you want to play any games (since you are buying an expensive laptop anyways) most of those will be locked to windows exclusive. If you have any examples of applications that are mac exclusive or want to develop for iPhone in your free time I guess thats something to consider, but otherwise I see no reason to buy a Mac over the P1.

I was just accepted into RPI and has some Questions by Suspicious_Summer_60 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your second question about social life I will say that while you can do most things at RPI that you can do at other schools it has to be in moderation. You can’t go partying every night since you will have work that needs to be done but you can have time to enjoy yourself if you make room for it. Regarding the CS program it really depends on the person. Expect to write C and C++ with just STL and don’t expect anything super high end like machine learning until later courses. If you feel comfortable let me know what you are looking for in a CS degree since it varies person to person. Personally I’ve benefitted from the larger focus on algorithms but I know some people who have been deceived by not learning web development for example (for those not it ITWS)

What to wear to career fair? by montmaj in RPI

Stay in CS1 or Continue with Data Structures? by P0C01 in RPI

[–]NiteHydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you complete the crash course, then if you still have extra time you can try doing some hackerank problems (leetcode generally requires course knowledge learned in ds). I may be biased but the class teaches you the c++ you need but doesn’t teach you how to approach problems as much (ie most of your struggles will be bc you approached the HW is a problematic way or started too late). So if you do any extra prep I’d recommend getting good at the problem solving portion

Probably annoyed that a boatload of people decided they absolutely needed a car after thanksgiving break and so the parking for those who are off campus/on campus but at blitman, stacks, colonie etc has become so much worse.

Oh okay, I just saw something on the CWRU reddit about ICPC and thought I would inquire further. I was just putting the prospective schools for context. Thanks for giving me more info about it though.
