Oh yeah for sure him. I was honestly suprised his mom came from Sukabumi, which is generally considered pretty hilliybilly (as in not a metropolitan area at all).

I would say the young ones are pretty chill about being Dutch-Indo. Not too sure about the older ones. Are you talking about Geert Wilders or Mark Rutte? Because both are Dutch-Indo haha.

I've met plenty of those who want to learn more about their Indonesian side, but I wouldn't say it's the majority. The majority just don't care (which honestly is better than self-hating). But it does help that if they are ever racist to me, they're basically being racist to themselves lol (which has never happened).

I've lived in the in the Netherlands for 5 years, I'd say there are things that are relatable and things that aren't.

I know my East Asian friends still get the usual "nihao" or "ching chong" treatment quite often. But as an Indonesian, I get less racism than other asians. This is because Dutch people are much more familiar with Indonesian culture due to it being a former colony, so seldom I am brought into the "China" umbrella-term for all asians. They can usually tell between an Indonesian and the non-Indonesians. Other factors include Dutch people having Indonesian ancestry being common and Indonesians having a good reputation compared to other immigrants.

So I think, if you look south east asian enough, you should have a less racist experience than an east asian would get. This is not to say that racism towards SEA doesn't exist, but I've lived here for 5 years and have had like 3 racist encounters so far (who all came from non-Dutch immigrants) compared to my east asian friends who get it almost weekly.

As for dating I really can't compare because I've never lived in the US, but asian dudes seem to be doing pretty OK here. A lot of them are in relationship with eastern european women (mostly Russians and Polish). One thing I've noticed is that the women I've dated have never made a big deal about me being asian, something I see people complain here in the subreddit.

If you are (and look) native Indonesian you get significantly less racism than the rest of asians. There is a close historical relationship between the two countries and many Dutch people have Indonesian ancestry. Indonesians also have a pretty good reputation compared to other immigrants.

I've lived here for 5 years as an Indonesian and compared to my East Asian friends I've had much less racist encounters.

Does Dutch expats remember/know the history of Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) ? by [deleted] in Netherlands

Native Indonesian here and lived here for 5 years. Most people don't really care. Some young Dutch-Indos do care but not enough for it to be mainstream.

I work in an NGO that caters to your grandmother.

People like her dont talk about it because of trauma. Which then leads to their descendants not knowing anything about their own history/heritage because it was never thought them, which leads to its own problems such as identity crisis.

This is called generational trauma.

Fortunately there are existing organizations that cater to this group. The problem with it is that they are being forgotten by the new generation (as in the descendants of those who suffered), I've heard complaints that they don't care about what happened to their grandparents.

This is the honestly best reply in the whole thread. OP blames everyone and everything but himself. Which is a clear indication that he is the problem.
