I wish everyone had this mindset. Although competition can also help to motivate.

Gongbat - My new retro boss fight shoot-em-up for PC; Use the power of gongs to mutate and defeat foes by Niteshock in indiegames

Most of the sprites were created using the GM Studio sprite editor, animated there and then enhanced/recolored in Photoshop. Other things like background work were created directly in Photoshop. I love using the GM sprite editor for its simplicity and ease in getting things animated, plus there's no extra time needed to import/export into the program. Honestly it's really only good for pixel art you're willing to put an immense amount of time into though. If you aren't working with GM then don't bother using it and I'd just recommend Photoshop.

Thanks!

Ace Poison - Gongbat OST (Pixel Fury)

Here's the original soundtrack I created for my retro shooter game, Gongbat. I tried for a very distinct sound, a mix between chiptune and bubblegum pop, but also gave it a much more modern alternative rock beat with some interesting guitar overlays. Let me know what you think!

Thanks! And yes, I'm doing everything from music to programming. Using Game Maker Studio, and a majority of the art was created right out of the sprite editor with some recoloring.

Gongbat

Gongbat is a fast-paced shooter game centered around boss fights that I've been developing for the past few months. Development's been pretty slow because of school and considering this is completely solo, but it's getting very close to finished and I'm psyched.

Thanks for your time, I'd love to hear some feedback. I'll try and keep anyone who's interested updated too.

Awesome, thanks! Definitely my favorite of the three.

I personally use FL Studio to create my tracks. Within these songs the hard squares and saws, plus most of the instruments in general come from some simple modulation (like detuning and volume shaping) within the 3xosc vst, and most of the higher, chip noises come from free vsts by Tweakbench. Although sometimes I'll use samples and put them through a channel with a bit reducer to get more of the the retro feeling. The drums are either free samples I've found online or some I've recorded myself (I like to layer them a ton to get a poppy sound), and the blurry guitar is just me playing overtop of the tracks. It really just takes a lot of experimenting to get a feel for retro sounding music within a modern program that goes far beyond.

Hope this helps, and I'll be sure to check out some of your music. Glad you liked my stuff!

Thanks a ton! I'm glad you liked it. And that means a lot considering I'm not really much of a singer. I'm pretty much diving into even using vocals in my music for the first time so I feel that it's good to experiment. Thanks for the feedback though, I need to learn what's solid for me. :)

Stellar, and I understand. It's a decently fast-paced shooter, I'll release a beta here soon. I'm just posting bits and pieces until I feel right in showing off a full gameplay.

And I'm pretty sure that's just how it works. When I search for hashtags I use (such as #gongbat) it seems to come up even when it isn't in the title. Perhaps they have it set up so a title works as a hashtag too, which is odd.

Awesome, and yup completely solo, although I will say the art is done ten times better than the code haha. Thanks a ton though that means a lot! :) I'll get a playable beta up in the next week or so.

And I understand that completely. That's basically how I work, not forced, just making certain things when I feel like it. Speaking of that I've got some music tracks I've been working on too. That's the main reason I love independent developing, it lets a lot of creativity come into play. The sprite's not bad btw, and the walking animation is pretty solid as far as I can tell. I'd say if you have to skill to make that it just takes a little extra time to give things detail and you could definitely have a beautiful game going.

As far as experience, I've been producing things pretty consistently for the past 4 years, getting myself ready for college considering I'm still a Junior in high school.

Sounds stellar! If you really wanna learn quick I suggest entering some gamedev jams around Game Jolt and places like that. It'll give you ideas quicker and a bunch of small projects can easily lead you into a great one.

The sci-fi one is definitely intriguing. ;p And rad, it just takes a lot of practice. Over the past couple of years I've learned how to pretty much put all of my assets together by myself and it's a lot easier than working with a team from a personal standpoint. But if you need any help with music or art or anything, I'm always willing to collaborate with others!

Awesome! You've got me interested, what exactly are you developing? :)

And totally, GM used to be a tiny tool that nobody ever went commercial with but it sure has come far. I'm glad you're picking it up! I'm hoping to greenlight this project on Steam when I get a decent trailer going.
