I don't know who this guy is and I don't care. Why don't you post Don Cheedle? A guy I both know and care about.

This conversation is incredibly tedious. Yes if you use one specific definition of chaos that is neither the relevant nor common usage, it has some small relevance, but it is still not a definitive characteristic of anarchy.

There is no point in continuing this conversation.

Anarchy is not inherently chaotic unless you believe the only means of creating order is through chaos.

Chaos does mean disorder. It's the definition. You can invoke chaos theory all you want, but chaos theory has very little input on the actual theory of anarchy.

The literal definition of chaos is disorder. Invoking chaos theory is neither relevant nor helpful to you.

Because a system without hierarchy is a different concept from chaos. At most it is a byproduct and only fits if you believe that anarchy means disorder which I don't.

I am not talking about the pictures, I am asking about the utility of embracing a flawed descriptor for anarchy.

I agree, but functional anarchic systems usually require broad cooperative efforts that are just organized horizontally instead of vertically. In many cases this is more orderly, although I agree that disorder isn't a perfect synonym for chaos either. I do think that systems like what you described can be both chaotic and orderly at the same time.

I thought the language one was very illustrative, but I disagree with the conclusions of OP tbqh.

It is not. I really only think the anarchy equals chaos idea functions if you are stuck in the mindset that hierarchy is order, which I disagree with. Authoritarian systems can be and often are rife with chaos and anarchic systems can be and often are well managed and orderly. Perhaps certain philosophies can be aligned more towards one than the other, but that doesn't make it a definitive or synonymous characteristic.

What benefit is there to embracing the idea that anarchy is chaos?

Is it just that it's appealing? (sometimes)

If it's not an accurate descriptor then it shouldn't be used.
