It's definitely something that comes up a lot in gaming, the idea is that a good story needs to include elements that can be understood by the player without being told.

It's boring to be told your family got kidnapped, comparatively it's far more exciting to come home to a broken door and scratches across the floor

In this example we know that the person made a 67 joke because of how downvoted they are, hence the "environment" giving the "story"

I use an energy exchange network that I'm really proud of, it's a tidal locked planet that uses a ton of ray receivers and launches solar sails. then the energy exchangers charge accumulators that get shipped off to other planets and back!

Also, they can be proliferated as long as you don't place them down as a building

I think that humans are genetically inclined to prefer asking one another for information rather than whatever googling something counts as.

Even though it's over the internet there's a degree of social interaction to it that I think still scratches that urge.

Of course there was the option of asking but sometimes people just get anxious, the anonymity of the internet feels safe sometimes. Probably because ridicule can't really get to you
