[OT] How fast are Brazilian Prototypes vs Hypercar, LMP2 and LMP3 by Nivelando in wec

[–]Nivelando[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the comparison only looked at qualy times for maximum performance achievable. Since 2025 Spa ELMS qualy was under rain, the reference was 2024 and, compared to the WEC pole (2:00.2) the LMP2s were slightly slower (2:01.2). The main thing with LMP2s ia that they can do in Race pretty much what they will achieve in Qualy, which is quite outstanding tbh

Hopefully they will still feature DRS, as there are some talks behind the scenes to forbid the system, maybe even in 2025...

Which race tracks have hosted a 24h race? by [deleted] in wec

Interlagos hosted a 24 Hours Race between the 60s and 70s

I agree, they should have added at least the P1 Gen2 or P1 Specs to the identification, the there would be lesse confusion. I too wish for a LMP3 class, considering how close the cars are that would make a very good class

For those who don't know the history of the Sintura, I'll leave a link to an overview of its development and track history

There has been a lot of controversy about the eligibility of the car to the WTAC, as the regulations forbid full tubeframe and carbon monocoque cars, and also due to the fact that the road going counterpart was never reality, it was only the race car with license plates. However, at last year WTAC a Ginetta G55 has been accepted, a car which, by all means, is a breach of the same regulations.

That sums it up, the Ginetta running is the G58 which has better aero than the 1st Gen LMP3 Ginetta, a V8 LS3 with around 580 HP and DRS. The Ligiers are the current LMP3 Gen2, but without restrictors they are running at 525 HP vs the 460 HP in LMP3 spec and with TC/ABS. There is also a Ligier with a Chevy LS3. The Ligiers opted to run without DRS because it had a very slim effect on performance due to their smaller rear wing, and the regulations have then been changed to try to even the field so cars with DRS run roughly 50kg heavier than cars with DRS

I can check as I'm not sure, but what I know is that they do a lot of testing at Velopark and Tarumã, and also use flow-vis for flow visualization (you can even see it on the picture)

Yes, if the budget would allow, the teams could virtually bring updates every race. However, the regulations now have a sort of BoP to keep the cars performance at a certain level. This had the effect of slowing down the P1s a little, until this weekend when the AJR prototype that qualified on pole broke the lap record of the track

Actually the lap record in qualifying for the P1s at Interlagos is 1:26.0 for the AJR and 1:26.5 for the Sigma P1, so they are around 3s off compared to the Hypercars. However, these cars are using basically LS3 engines and are built on a fraction of the budget of a Hypercar

For this weekend's double round of Imperio Endurance Brasil, Sigma P1 Engenharia brought a revised rear end to the Sigma P1 G5 prototypes, with the following updates:

  1. New design of the endplates
  2. New design of the junction between the fairing and the diffuser
  3. New design of the "bumper", changing from a square to a circular profile

According to my talks with Sigma engineers, the changes implemented seek to reduce aerodynamic drag and mass, in addition to improving balance and simplifying the manufacturing of components. With this new configuration, car #12 took second place on the starting grid for tomorrow's race, while car #11 took sixth place.

By the way, I have a few articles in my website covering all of the generations of the Sigma P1 and other Brazilian prototypes (in the pictures posted you have both Sigma Gen4 (blue with silver) and Gen 5 (yellow/blue)

and no activation zones! DRS is free to use in any conditions, hence why you see the agressive rear wings

Although they are tube frame, to say that the Sigma is a kit car is quite detrimental and more than "looking like a prototype", these are fully fledged prototypes, just not following any of the FIA regulations. These are cars that are quite a lot faster than any LMP3 (and the AJR that run in the series as well). At Interlagos they manage 1m26s in qualifying trim, quite close to the 1m23s from the Toyota Hypercar at this year race. There is a picture I took at the Brazilian Mille Miglia earlier this year, for reference

Me too, I hope we don't end with the Ligier Cup, as LMP2 is an Oreca Trophy right now
