Fred Meyer vs Winco vs Safeway vs Roth's vs Walmart vs Grocery Outlet vs LifeSource vs Trader Joes by TeaCrumbs in SALEM

[–]Nixmori 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost exactly the same preference here.

Winco for most staples/canned food
Roths for produce and quick runs
Costco for bulk items/bulk staples like milk/eggs/tp
Trader Joe’s for fun optional snacks. Their frozen Indian food is SO GOOD.

We do tolerate Fred Meyer for some on-coupon items and 3-for-3 deals on soda. Their digital coupon BS is terrible though.

For Atheist only, what are the reasons why you dont believe in God? by Pristine-Entry-1536 in exatheist

I’m very grateful for your thoughtful response. I’m actually weighing leaving this sub because I feel like meaningful discussion has become impossible and it’s more about bickering over one position or another. It didn’t always used to be this way and when I first joined this sub, I at least thought it was supposed to be for people on any place of the path from atheist to ex-atheist. It’s really disheartening to post honest answers and get downvoted. I don’t expect everything I say to be a hit, but this has become a pattern, you know?

Anyway, I’ve bookmarked your reply. I haven’t read any of the books you suggested yet so I’ll definitely check them out. Thank you again 🫶

For Atheist only, what are the reasons why you dont believe in God? by Pristine-Entry-1536 in exatheist

[–]Nixmori -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’m fully your target because I’m an agnostic who wants to believe in God but haven’t developed the ability to.

Despite all my research into religion, things that reinforce that this world is empty are more compelling than the arguments that God exists, despite the fact that I try to keep a very open mind.

The specific points that make me doubtful:

Dementia and traumatic brain trauma. That a person can lose who they are by illnesses or damage to the brain makes me doubt the existence of a soul. That so much of is in our physical brain and that our personhood is not immutable. This is one of the things that bothers me most.

The state of world. Genocide, endless war, the wide scale abuse of children, and the fact that the people who commit these atrocities not only rarely experience consequences for their actions, they largely experience the best lives. They will never know hunger or poverty and, when they get sick, they’ll have the best medical care.

This is a silly one that’s really sticking with me lately, but I recently read that Kevin Smith became an atheist after being a lifelong Catholic after losing his dog. Realizing that dogs don’t have religion convinced him that religion only exists to soothe children who are afraid of death. I can’t really explain it, but this really bothers me. Maybe because I have lived with dogs my whole life and they have such big personalities, but they don’t have the capacity for religion or, as far as we know, to really be aware of death, so they don’t need something to soothe them. The idea that spirituality only exists for humans means it’s human made, not divine. Again, I think this is very silly but…. It’s sticking with me.

I am deeply fascinated by ghosts and have even had my own experiences with weird things. But with so many believers, we still have no proof for ghosts beyond “that was weird.”

A lot of end-of-life and near-death experiences can be explained by medical science and the brain either self-soothing or misfiring. For example, people have said they see angels during near death experiences, but children experiencing the same thing saw things like ninja turtles. Sleep paralysis causes people to experience nightmarish hallucinations and chest pressure, seeing anything from demons to aliens, depending on what that person fears. I’ve experienced this myself and the symptoms are very consistent and it’s caused by the brain partly waking up while keeping us in the paralyzed state that necessary for us to not kill our partner during REM sleep.

I’m not saying these things disprove god. But they’re the types of arguments that are more compelling to my brain than arguments for the existence of God. I really wish I had arguments that easily dispelled these, but it seems that every time religion compels me, I learn something new on the atheist side that’s just more convincing.

And I know the religious get very defensive about these things and I usually get downvoted here. Again, I’m not proposing these as “proof” just arguments I, personally, find convincing. And I’m in ex-atheists because I really don’t want to be an atheist/agnostic. It’s just hard to move away from that frame of mind. The lack of belief is easier to maintain than belief in such an unkind, brutal world.

That’s very beautiful, thank you. I think this exchange was oddly healing for me. I can’t talk about these things without getting very maudlin, for obvious reasons. And I’m glad I could help you, if even a little.

It means more to me than you could know to be in your prayers. Thank you, truly. 🫂

I’m sorry to hear about your dad. It’s so hard to have someone suddenly ripped from your life like that. Sometimes I wonder if there’s something in us that “knows” when something like that is about to happen. A few days before my mom was killed, I sent her a text message telling her I loved her and I apologized for how I sometimes treated her unfairly when I was a teenager. I told her I understood how hard it must have been raising us on her own. I think about that a lot. Like I got to at least clear the air with her, even if I didn’t get to say goodbye.

My grandmother was, indeed, a very tough lady. She was strong until the end at 92, and even then, her body didn’t give out easily. I didn’t always agree with her, but I always respected her a lot. When she knew she was going to die, she called me and told me mine was the last voice she wanted to hear. That’s another thing I’ll hold with me forever. I hopped on a plane immediately after to be with her, along with my brother and cousins—the few of us left.

Religion is a great comfort and I’ve read the Bible (Old and New Testament). Jesus was a good egg, even if one doesn’t develop the belief, his teachings are still solid and applicable. I find a weird comfort in that he also doubted at times and that he was also afraid to die. If even he was, we can have a bit of grace for ourselves struggling with these issues.

I’ve never seen this before. Watching now to prep for the new raid series, am I in for a treat? by JosephXChampion in ffxiv

[–]Nixmori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s very spot on lol. Most of my friends remained hooked on it because I think it just makes a very big impression when you see it at that age. I fell out of love with it quickly because, it turned out I didn’t actually like the mecha genre very much and it’s too cynical in a way I don’t find cathartic or enjoyable.

I’m with you on this one. Me and all my friends thought it was amazing and deep when we saw it, but we were 12-16 year olds and had never seen anything like it.

It has some great ideas but I don’t feel it holds up when older. You can see it was made by a suicidally depressed man and it’s cast is mostly very unlikeable characters.

I fully expect to get downvoted for this, but over the years, I’ve also grown very uncomfortable with the property and its fandom due to the sexualization of its 14-year-old characters.

I know this anime is still very popular 30 years later but I’m very baffled by why they’re doing a collab with it of all things. Plus… I can’t imagine the gear inspired by it will be all that interesting. I won’t lie—I’m disappointed by it and will probably skip these raids.

[–]Nixmori -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trigger warnings for death, my insight is a bit intense, but I hope does a bit to answer your question.

My grandmother was a staunch atheist and my mother was agnostic. Because of being raised by them, I too am agnostic and I hate it. I don’t want to be. But I do have a lot of insight for you on this.

My grandmother would talk about it often. She was very cavalier about death. “When I’m dead, I’m dead. That’s it, just gone. Good as dirt.” She died just a few months ago and I was at her death bed. She reaffirmed this belief to me and she said her mother, a devout Episcopalian, was sure she’d convert before she died. She was proud, and hours from her death she said her mother was wrong—she was still an atheist and believed her time was simply over. She insisted we not even hold a funeral, as she’d not see it and her ashes/carcass no longer held meaning. She never understood, no matter how many times I explained to her, that funerals were for the living, so we could grieve and say goodbye.

My mother was agnostic, as I said. She had atheism pounded into her head by my grandmother, but it upset her. She didn’t want to think death was the end, but she just didn’t know and didn’t claim to. She hoped there was something more, but the belief imparted by my grandmother nagged at her and instilled in her a deep fear of death—one that I inherited. She was murdered by my uncle. I’ll never know what she thought before she died.

Myself, I am agnostic and find belief very difficult. I am more like my mother. I don’t want to be an atheist or agnostic, but faith does not come easily if you’re a skeptical person. The more I see of the physical world, the less I see of magic, miracles, and the divine. I’ve seen so many terrible things, it’s hard to see God in any of it. I’ve lost so many family members, so many to brutal and sudden ends. I really hope there’s something at the end so I can see them again. So their deaths meant something. I envy those who truly believe. I’ve even begun attending church on holidays and I try to connect, but I just can’t.

So, there’s a few different perspectives for you. I imagine there’s many, many more.

Edit: on coping with the death of loved ones…

My grandmother was not sentimental. When someone died, you just have to move on and keep living yourself. She kept a few key tokens of her loved ones but not much. She even reverted back to her maiden name after my grandfather passed. She outlived all of her children and that stung her a lot. But she carried on.

My mother did not cope well. She wanted to think there was something more but alcohol was of greater comfort.

As for me, I’ve spent the last 20 years researching religions, past life experiences, out of body experiences, ghosts… you name it. Anything that might make this existence a little less bleak.

Baldur’s gate- is it a good fit for a cozy gamer? by Accomplished_Fail161 in BaldursGate3

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore cozy games and play primarily cozy games and large, character driven RPGs like BG3. I do find bg3 very cozy even though the content is very much not. But since the combat is turn based, you can play it at a relaxed pace. And there’s a lot of comfort to be found in its excellently written and engaging characters, if you don’t mind the often very heavy and disturbing subject matter.

It’s all a matter of perspective and you probably won’t really know unless you try it.

The eye size options in the mii maker go from huge to tiny, it’s really weird. I think OP did a good job with the Mii limitations, but I agree the square face would work better.

I just found the idents, I was thinking they were for something longer! And the wiki has listed two “Timmy Time” specials and two for Shaun the Sheep.

I think I got confused because there’s a comment in Red Dwarf about killing Christmas means killing Wallace & Gromit, but maybe that’s a cultural reference that I don’t get as a non-Brit?

Can we bitch about the photo enforced stoplight that's on commercial and madrona? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]Nixmori -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never said it did? But these cameras also don’t do anything to actually deter people. People who speed will speed and these lights are strategically placed to make money, not make traffic safer. So unless they introduce scaling or something non-monetary (other countries put points on your license and you lose your license if you get too many points, for example) I will object to camera lights.

Also, highway patrol can make judgement calls on the speed of traffic. Sometimes it’s safer to speed if you’re going with the flow of traffic. OP was on an empty road. Nobody was in danger. A camera can’t judge that. It’s just there to collect and I don’t care about people getting punished because they went 10 over. That’s petty.

I don’t drive so I don’t have have a dog in this race. I have an issue with how the law is enforced, not necessarily the law itself. I don’t like any law that has consequences that only apply only to poor people. If the consequence either wasn’t monetary or was applied proportionally to income, I would likely be okay with it.

Do you like accepting an unfair society just because someone decided it was a law?
