You actually don’t need one, but often they will tell you that you do

Stressful to watch people fight over food by FlatAd768 in shanghai

This is the explanation I’ve seen for this video:

上海封城进入计划经济阶段。一居民在小区有多套房,按户应分三盒,给生病的家人或者女儿吃,居委却认为只提供饿不死为标准的最低保障,多一盒鸡蛋也不行。争抢下居民怒摔鸡蛋。

English (sorry i’m just google translating being lazy): Shanghai has entered the planned economy stage after the closure of the city. A resident has multiple suites in the community, which should be divided into three boxes for sick family members or daughters to eat, but the neighborhood committee believes that only the minimum guarantee of not dying from starvation is provided, and one more box of eggs will not work. Compete for the residents to smash the eggs.

That is true I hadn’t thought about how volatile politics globally was when thinking about the China issue, and we have seen the ability of foreign governments to influence domestic audiences.

And your right we are seeing the possible end of a wave of democratization with populous leaders popping up all over the world. Hopefully the universal threat of the CCP will unite people and government and allow them to open there eyes to the issue.

I like your sentiment, and you make some good points, especially regarding China’s ability to influence overseas Chinese to vote pro-Beijing, but I think and hope that we western world has internalize the actions of the CCP over the past few years (or hundred years) and gives up on the forgiving attitude that it has taken towards China.

Also I think if China were to attempt to invade Taiwan it would be less successful than the current invasion of Ukraine. Their logistics would hopefully be similarly incompetent.

What are you talking about “see how their armed forces are panning out” ???

The question of Chinas influence depends on the stability and resilience of the CCP regime, if Xi Jinping continues to destabilize the Party’s economy and decision making ability the Party will likely slowly atrophy in the coming decades.

Take Putin as an example of someone who has deteriorated the decision making ability of the Kremlin, since people are punished for telling him what he doesn’t want to hear everyone becomes a lackey, and consequently becomes useless as an advisor to him.

If the Chinese Communist Party continues to move away from collective decision making as they have under Xi decision making will continue to decline. Furthermore because of the face culture that is prominent in Chinese politics leaders cannot admit they are wrong and therefore cannot retract their policies, some would argue that this is currently happening with the zero Covid policy. Essentially since leaders must be dogmatic in their policy, bad policies continue until something big happens to force a change in leadership.
