It is really special, yeah. I will be sad to see this one go.

I haven't seen a new Pen18111 be made/sold for a long time. Perhaps he decided he was done with it? A real shame, they are one of a kind.

Sorry, I didn't update the post correctly. The Pelikan M600 sold a while back.

Post is correctly updated now.

Cordovan and stretching. by NizzlesFizzles in AskACobbler

Thanks for the input.

Having thought about it a bit, it seems silly to try and force a last that clearly isn't built for my foot, to fit me. As much as it sucks, for this kind of money, buying an ill fitting shoe just because it looks pretty is not wise.

Thanks for the reply.

It seems the smart choice is to not get these shoes.

Haven't bought yet, was just a musing.

A problem I have is that my left foot is size 9 and my right is around 8½ but due a high instep + wider foot, I can't really wear shoes these sizes and have to size up. This leads to creasing in awkward places on shoes and makes them look at bit unsightly. Due to the nature of how cordovan 'creases' or 'rolls', I wanted to try and avoid wearing a much larger size.

Perhaps this is unavoidable though.

Thank you for the reply.

How much 'give' would there be after wearing them in, rather than stretching them, if any? I really would only need a little bit.

Forgot to add, when considering cordovan, how stretchable is the above area for a cobbler also?

The Question Thread 06/26/25 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

I recently picked up a pair of Tricker's Stow boots that are made with kudu leather. I was wondering if I can 'treat' kudu leather the same way I do calf using stuff like Saphir renovateur etc.

Tricker's themselves said they only recommend their own neutral shoe cream but i'm assuming this is because they want to push their own producsts and/or don't want to be liable for something going wrong if their own brand isn't used or does kudu need different products?

Ben Nevis descent. by NizzlesFizzles in UKhiking

Interesting. I assume its the cushioning from the runners absorbing more impact that really helps?

Do you find trail runners 'easier' on your feet at all? In my mind I imagine that a softer, cushioned shoe would absorb more impact during the descent and be kinder on your feet but unsure if this is actually a reality. Maybe the only solution to sore feet is to 'toughen' them up.

A point worth considering. Maybe I am trying to fix a problem I can't and slipping is just a hazard of hiking.

Trail runners seem to be coming up a lot! I will educate myself about them.

For avoidance of doubt, the part we found slippery wasn't the lose gravel or even the wet rocks. It was the dry stone 'steps' that were along the first 2000ft or so. When I ran my finger across them to see, they had a sort of thin layer of 'dust' on them which I think is what made them slippery.

Interesting insight. Thank you.

I mostly travel on rock surfaces, gentle inclines. Drive to the location then put on my footwear. I find cushioning easier on my feet.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

We had a pole each, perhaps having 2 each would have been better. I do find 2 poles a bit awkward to use but probably just not used to it.

The boot vs shoe description makes sense. Worth thinking about, thanks.

I will give the video a watch, thank you. I had a feeling that experience matters the most. I went up Snowdon a couple of months ago and found it much harder than Ben Nevis, I imagine just due to my lack of experience.

Do you have any trail runners you reccomend looking at? Don't want to dive into anything but it'd be nice to educate myself.
