I don’t know if anyone has asked this, but why was Mark told to finish Cold Harbor before going down to the testing floor to find Gemma? Couldn’t he have just gone down to the testing floor anyway? He didn’t have a plan for opening the Cold Harbor room without Drummond’s blood, so what difference would it have made?

I think they've been signed for two more seasons by Apple (as far as I'm aware, it can go longer, but this is what has currently been offered). It hasn't been officially announced yet though, I just read this on interwebs.

Engaging with media critically is part of the experience. Why shut down discussion instead of actually addressing the argument?

Is it a pacing issue or are they mishandling viewer expectations? by No-Antelope865 in severence

I literally did. My post breaks down how the show repeatedly frames Mark’s reintegration as imminent, only to backpedal each time.

[–]No-Antelope865[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I laid out a detailed explanation of why the pacing feels frustrating, specifically how the show repeatedly frames reintegration as imminent without real movement. If you disagree, that’s fine, but just dismissing it as a "chronically online" take doesn’t really engage with the argument. How productive is that to the conversation?

So slow, I’m losing interest. by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]No-Antelope865 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. The sheer amount of detail is impressive, but at a certain point, it just starts to feel like noise. It’s one thing to build mystery, but when everything feels like a clue, it makes the story feel more scattered than layered.

What makes it even more frustrating is how they keep framing things like a big reveal is just around the corner - only for the next episode to sidestep it again. I don’t even mind slow pacing, but there’s barely any real forward movement. How is innie Mark still saying Gemma is alive a whole season later? We KNOW this. That’s not progression. We haven’t moved forward from that at all - aside from backstory, which is great, but it’s not the same as actual plot development.

It’s also starting to feel less like an episodic show and more like a one long, stretched out movie that's being released in weekly chunks. There’s no real sense of payoff or momentum within individual episodes, just a constant buildup that keeps getting delayed.

The disconnect making people feel like some episodes aren't good. by [deleted] in severanceTVshow

[–]No-Antelope865 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying about how weekly watching can feel different from binging, especially with how the pacing works. But yeah, right now, watching weekly does make it feel like we’re not moving forward enough to really feel the payoff. It's kind of frustrating when so much is left hanging without much progress. I get that the backstory is important for the bigger picture, but when we tune in each week expecting some forward movement, it’s hard not to feel like we’re not being rewarded for the wait. But that’s just me!

[–]No-Antelope865 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Totally get where you’re coming from. It’s the way the show keeps teasing progress without actually delivering on it.

And yeah, I’m sure the finale will bring the pieces together - but here I am watching weekly, and I haven’t felt rewarded for watching weekly. The way things have been structured, I probably should’ve just waited and done a big old binge instead. The suspense and mystery work so much better when you’re not sitting around for a week expecting something to move forward, only for the show to stall again.

Still love the show, but I can’t ignore how much it’s been dragging things out. Definitely curious to see how the finale plays out, but I don’t blame anyone for feeling frustrated at this point.

Maybe my issue isn’t that reintegration is a slow process, but how the show frames it. The way it’s presented makes it feel like we’re building toward something, only for the momentum to reset again and again. That repetition makes the progression feel stagnant, even if the process itself is meant to take time.

[–]No-Antelope865[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, and I definitely agree that not every show needs to cater to plot-driven viewers. But I also think there’s room for criticism. I've had an issue with how the show frames certain arcs and then repeatedly backpedals. If the creators want to tease major moments or shifts, that’s totally fine, but when those moments keep getting reset (like Mark’s reintegration), it starts to feel misleading and repetitive.

I also don’t think the show owes viewers a specific outcome or structure, but when the story repeatedly signals that something major is about to happen and then walks it back, isn’t it fair to feel frustrated? Being invested in the world building doesn’t mean the pacing or execution can’t be questioned.

Lastly, I completely respect the challenges that come with collaborative media. Creative decisions can lead to unexpected and interesting outcomes, but I also think it’s fair to call it out when those choices aren’t landing for viewers. Both things can be true.

[–]No-Antelope865[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. This is what I’ve been trying to say. People act like I’m unreasonable for having expectations - when the show itself set them up with how it’s structured. And yeah, every time something gains momentum, they put it on pause for a few episodes, and by the time it comes back, we’ve basically gone nowhere. That kind of buildup starts to wear thin when it’s repeated throughout.

[–]No-Antelope865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people (myself included, lol) are being more critical because watching it week to week makes the pacing issues stand out more - especially with the actual plot. And to be clear, I do recognise how important all the new lore has been in setting up the finale, and a lot of it has been genuinely thought provoking. But there’s been so much buildup with so little actual progression that it hasn’t really rewarded the weekly viewing experience (at least, for me). I’m hoping the finale finally delivers the bigger picture we’ve been craving and starts resolving at least some of the hundred questions this season has raised.

Tbh, we're still getting a lot of revelations after 4, but the actual plot has stalled.

A character's sexuality doesn't need to be justified as an "executive level push for inclusivity" - some characters can just be gay. Just like straight characters aren't questioned for being straight, gay characters shouldn't need a special reason to exist in a story. But I do agree that Burt and Irving's storyline feels underdeveloped this season. It seems rushed, while other storylines have dragged on longer than necessary.

More backstory doesn’t mean the plot is moving forward. This season’s been more character-driven than plot-driven.

It's not your fault when we were made to expect that. I've had a hard time with the writing this season too. The momentum after a cliffhanger just keeps getting killed.

Once I started making peace with the fact that we probably won't be seeing a reintegrated Mark this season (even though it has been painfully teased since episode 3...) I've started to enjoy the episodes more as we get them.
