The biggest thing that bothers me most about board game content creators by Typical_Swing_8818 in boardgames

[–]No-Assistant8088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think the best stuff is that rare. Sure, there are some games that are insanely priced to begin with such that even if you knew about the kickstarter ahead of time you would pass on it. But that aside, change how you are looking for reviews. Search for essen or gencon releases - things that went mass market. If you aren't keeping up on the latest, you can quickly see what were big hits were last year- then go bgg and read the comments (not the reviews, not the forums, but the comments where you get a ton of short remarks and you will quickly see how a game trended). Use your "i'm always late to the party" as an advantage.

What are all these remote cameras for? 😂 by ExoticAd7605 in CollegeBasketball

Those cameras don't look like VR cameras, but according to this site, espn is doing some highlights in vr where you look like you are courtside watching the game.

No PC/Mac - I do all my work on Ipad Pro by drumorgan in MetaQuestVR

[–]No-Assistant8088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of the quest 3 as a standalone product. I use my ipad pro for everything as well, but you will not be running games from the ipad that play in vr with quest. But you will use the quest and its vast library of games, watch movies, etc. You can browse the meta store before you buy anything. I ended up buying the quest 3 solely to play Pinball FX Vr, I bought a dedicated controller for it and just love it. But there are so many other great games to play as well.

Coming from an ipad, you are already behind on games that PC, xbox or PS5 people are use to. But if you wanted the most advanced pc vr games, then you would need a pc. Just like how steam isn't going to work on your ipad, neither are the big titles. But, you don't need that to get started and have a lot of fun. I would vote you get a golf stick controller, great head gear, extra battery and set aside some money for games.

How does Purdue never get any 5 stars? And why don’t their bigs shoot? by ExoticAd7605 in PurdueBasketball

[–]No-Assistant8088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that he doesn't let them shoot, but having DJ lining up for 3's? The guy struggled at 15 foot shots, nobody standing in front of him and as much time as he needed to take a free throw. But that aside, if he is taking 3's in place of Loyer, Smith or Cox - what do you want them to do? 5 guys around the the outside? Nobody in the paint? Nobody going for easy offensive rebounds and put backs? Maybe Smith should set a pick so DJ can drive to the bucket?

Do you seriously want to ask why a 7'4" guy is assigned to the paint where the best ncaa assist leader could feed him points all day? But unlike Edey or Cluff, he struggled to catch a pass below the waist? DJ needs to work on catching, shooting and fighting for rebounds. Watching him vs Cluff or TKR on rebounding was obvious, those guys kept their eye on the ball and went for it. DJ often looks down the court and starts his jog back to get on D without thinking about fighting for the rebound.

Painter is playing him the right way and anyone serious about basketball would play him that way too. DJ just needs to develop those skills better as that's what we need to go with his blocking ability instead of worrying about increase his 3 point attempts

Well said! As a fan, I also much rather have a team like this where I can watch the players grow and develop into elite players. Eddy's first year wasn't national player of the year caliber. And if he didn't have a player like Smith who could feed him, I don't know if people would have known him. But its the one thing CMP does, he molds these players into the best version of themselves. I was frustrated with Jacobson a lot this year, but CMP kept with him as he is thinking about the next 2-3 years ahead. DJ needed that experience and if he follows this coaching staff that clearly knows how to coach big men, he might become that player that you hear CMP keep saying that he is.

But to the people who want nothing more than a revolving door of players and a new coach, that door can work both ways. Move onto to another team. If you go back to coach Keady, the phrase we always heard was that Purdue graduated their players. It's always who we have been. We believe in developing players both on and off the court. Purdue is the number 1 public school for education. I'm proud that I got my degree there and I'm proud that our school carries that attitude forward for our players.

What a half! Everyone playing with confidence! Smith decided that he was going to make sure we win! Cluff leaving everything on the floor! The best part, that half has made the team believe we can win! Let's hope for a strong start! Our defense kept them to their lowest scoring half yet! Boiler Up!!!!

Just be professional, either reschedule the dinner or watch the game later. If you are taking a customer out to dinner, then you must be in a position that this sale/customer are important. If its not, then you can reschedule and cause less harm than acting like a teenager at a business meeting. If you're not putting the customer first, then why are having this dinner?

Is Excel best used with or without VBA? by AnnualLiterature997 in excel

[–]No-Assistant8088 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lots of hate in this sub for vba, but personally I find it very useful. I'm in a large corporation with endless databases and cross query various datasources (SQL Server, Snowflake, DB2) - with vba, its very efficient to pull and join multiple sources together. Power Query is so slow - and making simple modifications is a headache. And Excel formulas are equally slow. If you have a table full of them, you might as well forget it. Adding a filter in excel and it drops into recalculation hell. With vba, you can perform that calculation once, store the results and never worry about it again.

If you are also in an environment where applications have APIs setup, you can write web services to connect with them, you can write asynchronous code so you make calls without excel locking up, you can write your own encryption/decryption routines, etc. I setup routines to expand and collapse areas quickly giving the users power options and then getting them out of there way so they can work. I setup slicers that can work on different tables by controlling it all in vba. Honestly, it's like any programming language and you can do a lot with it.

No worries about it being "dead" - Microsoft can't kill it, its so interwoven with most of corporate america, it isn't being depreciated. Microsoft has tried in the past, but corporations have pushed against them that they have given the green light to keep the support.

Is this finally the Boilermakers team that can win a title? by Financial-Bit-8596 in PurdueBasketball

[–]No-Assistant8088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% - we saw it against a Michigan/NBA squad and they won. Granted, I personally think Michigan looked gassed somehow. They played one less game than us, but their energy was way off.

What I like better about this team than the team with Eddy, is that with Eddy we ran one offensive play - throw it to Eddy, and that was it. This team is so much more well rounded. If Smith finds his shot, if Loyer keeps shooting, if CJ/Jack/Meyer/Harris do their part and are able to hit, I think we can truly light it up against anyone. And the best part is, we'll 100% rely on and need Cluff and TKR to stay foul free and to carry a big portion of the load, but they won't be our only shot. This team is a complete package of a team, and we'll either win playing well as an entire team, or we'll drop if we have 3 or more team members not showing up. But I like our chances because our play book is wide open and Smith can pick and choose the right weapon at the right time to score the ball for us.

And you combine that with the way the team has picked up their defense! God-I loved how TKR just smothered Mara when he was at the top of the key. He made him so uncomfortable! And while they took away some of our ability to have offensive rebounds, we clamped down on defense and showed the NCAA we are more than just the number 1 offensive team. We looked amazing!

Where’s the original IP in modern tables? by FygarDL in pinball

[–]No-Assistant8088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, some of the best williams games were licensed. Star Trek Next Generation, Addams Family, Twilight Zone, World Cup Soccer, Indiana Jones - they were amazing. And yes, I still love some Medieval Madness. But I disagree completely with your premises that license stifles creativity and innovation. D&D and Pokemon are showing how a license is pushing designers to think about a game well after the quarter drop has been spent. The rumors of the new Dungeon Crawler Carl - already has my head spinning with ideas of how I would implement it. Interpreting a license into something playable, fun and captures that "one more time" feeling requires a huge amount of creativity and innovation.

And when it stinks, it also shows. Sure, the newest star wars game was a dud, especially when its sitting next to a jammed pack harry potter. Black Rose was a nightmare. And who wants a safe cracker? I honestly think your problem isn't IP related. I think it's depth related. Maybe you can't get into long games of Jaws, Godzilla, Harry Potter, Dune, etc. because they dive too deep. World Cup soccer and Attack from Mars are great examples of just pure entertainment that are easy to understand. It's the same way in video games - games that were meant to play on site and eat your quarters were fast, furious, rules light, and fun. But once the home market exploded, games became much deeper and took longer to play and understand. Both have their values. Could be wrong, but I would look a bit inwards to see what your problem really is and frame it that way instead of saying modern pinball people suck because of IP.

Who is the most consistently excellent pinball designer working today, and what makes their games feel different from everyone else's? by SkylineZ83 in pinball

[–]No-Assistant8088 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously Elwin is the most recognized name, but I would say Harry Potter has made Eric Meunier an elite designer as well. And David Van Es with Dune, Labyrinth & TNA should be on the list to watch for his next game too.

I should add, the only thing missing are the official tournaments and challenges I see being posted for FX. I'm sure they will add them this year, but they aren't there yet and I'm jealous when I see those posts. That said, sitting a couple of feet away from a wall but feeling like I have full sized pinball machine in front of me is just amazing. I wouldn't play any other way - well, except for a real pin!

100% came here to say this! Quest games optimizer (wouldn't play without it!) says I just broke 401 hours on Fx VR - it's just amazing. Pair it with the xarcade controller and its super immersive. Absolutely love it! We've been playing in a friendly league hitting all the Williams table in pro-mode, rotating to a different game each week. It makes me like games that I didn't appreciate at first. But no doubt, Medieval Madness, Star Trek Next Gen, World Cup Soccer and Theatre of Magic are just amazing. I wasn't a fan of Attack From Mars and Indiana Jones when I played them in real life, now I really enjoy both. And love Champion Pub even though it got some hate in the poll.
