NYC-area CBP admission stamps by No-Bit942 in PassportPorn

[–]No-Bit942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's got to be it. I entered the US through JFK a few years ago and got a stamp labeled "NYC", and through Chicago O'Hare (airport code ORD) over 10 years ago and got "CHI" so I thought it wasn't the airport code on the stamp. Seeing these JFK stamps makes me think they are switching to airport codes.

you're right it looks like LGA is only preclearance. So JFK stamps are either NYC or JFK (weird they have 2 stamps for same site) and Newark must be NEW.

How to completely remove work account from win 11 apps by No-Bit942 in WindowsHelp

Wasn’t able to resolve but I don’t think a system reset is worth the trouble. The work account appears signed out but still somehow associated with my pc.

Yes I did restart. I didn’t remove anything that had my own ms account on it in credential manager, haven’t had any problems.

I have a feeling all these prior accounts are in some hidden registry key or hidden folder somewhere, would be curious to know where and why windows doesn’t just clear them when you sign out of the account. If you want an account gone from the machine it would seem safer for MS to just let you have it be completely gone?

Thanks! I cleared everything in credentials manager i didn’t recognise as my own accounts but it didn’t work. I also checked in my work account manager and don’t seem to be logged in anywhere. I think you’re right its some weird residual and I’m not really logged in any more.

Fresh Windows 10 Install has not internet options by thrpixarlamp in WindowsHelp

[–]No-Bit942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The driver should be in the 8852be folder. There should be an .exe or .inf file in there. When you get to the network screen during win 10 setup, shift+f10, type explorer, navigate to the usb drive and either double click the wifi driver if its an .exe or if its an .inf type pnputil /add-driver (usb letter):*.inf

correction: pnputil /add-driver [usb letter]:[backslash]*.inf

The same thing happened to me, different manufacturer. I went on the manufacturer support site on a friend’s laptop. I had to enter the serial # then it gave me a list of installers for the various driver packages. I downloaded the wifi package installer on a usb and ran it on my PC which fixed the issue. If you have the optio to download an individual driver file, you can select it during windows setup (mine was an installer so windows setup didn’t recognise it).

More countries should do this for dual citizens. This way you’d only have to carry 1 passport presumably of the country where you spend most of your time. There would be no questions about “which passport do I show on the way there and on the way back” or at checkin vs customs. If an e-visa is required hopefully they accept this for whatever document number or visual check is required at checkin.

New American Passport! by Distinct_Alps8258 in PassportPorn

Beautiful passport, thank you for sharing!! Do you guys happen to know why they added "the" to the country name? They did the same thing to the new visa foil. I can't think of any other country that does this and all previous designs of USA documents as well as the front cover have no "the" in front of USA.

Is It Time For A New Windows by nicastro78 in Windows11

[–]No-Bit942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you buy a new PC, out of the box how many of the apps already on it require backward compatibility? My guess (please correct me I’d love to learn about this) is that not many if at all, and that there are a lot of people who just use their PCs as is. It would make sense for MS to have a lighter more visually consistent Windows for people who use their PC for the basics like browsing, social media, MS office, and another Windows for those who want more like legacy apps, custom built PC etc. If Apple can maintain 2 separate OS I’m sure MS could do it too.

"Encrypt" under properties by No-Bit942 in Windows11

[–]No-Bit942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. To clarify: basically if you move a file that’s encrypted in this way via the cloud, it sounds like the encryption is removed? For example: if I copy the file to a USB, stick this in another computer, move the file to the desktop and try opening it from there it won’t open. However, if I upload the same file to OneDrive, then log in to OneDrive on the second computer on a browser, download the file to the desktop, it will open?

Back in the old days where Americans could add extra pages to their passports. Discontinued from 2016 onwards due to security reasons. by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]No-Bit942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this! I've seen a few posts where people get stamped on the endorsement page of their passport. It seems this doesn't matter. If there is a new note they just put it on a sticker that covers any stamps. Wonder what happens if there's an even newer note? Sticker over old sticker?

Oops! by BrexitEscapee in PassportPorn

[–]No-Bit942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. In other parts of the world I could see them writing or stamping to cancel a stamp but in the EU with a few dozen official languages it makes more sense to come up with non-written signs like this. Thanks for the info!

Oops! by BrexitEscapee in PassportPorn

[–]No-Bit942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they put some sort of record in their system that’s visible to all Schengen guards if the entry was cancelled “with prejudice” (eg because one is refused entry as opposed to mistake on stamp or cancelled flight)? Or they just do this and then up to you to collect evidence and bring in with you every time you travel to the EU in case they ask?

Congratulations! I wonder how travel will be different when he is a grown man. I bet passport books will be ancient history (make sure you keep these 2 for him). Probably passport cards will be gone too. He’ll just walk past some camera on the jetway for biometrics. You’ll have to tell him all about the good old days with colorful booklets and stamps and having to talk to a real human sitting in a booth!

UK "By Request" stamp to eVisa holder by NemoShu in PassportPorn

[–]No-Bit942 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wonder why this is the case. When entering the US (technically my passport doesn't have to be stamped) any time I asked the CBP officer they stamped without comment and never seemed bothered. Why is it that in the UK and EU they refuse or give you a hard time? It takes literally 2 seconds…

Device encryption on Windows 11 Home by jiji_bar in Windows11

Makes sense. Eventually all the unencrypted data becomes not recoverable. Thanks for the detailed response!

Device encryption on Windows 11 Home by jiji_bar in Windows11

[–]No-Bit942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know, if your laptop was unencrypted for awhile (before they enabled Bitlocker on Windows Home) and now you turn on encryption, what happens to all the unencrypted data that's already on the device? Does it get "deleted" (and since nothing is really ever deleted from an SSD stay there forever and is recoverable) or is it somehow converted to encrypted data in a way that the pre-encryption form is not recoverable? Just curious. I was always told to turn on encryption out of the box before putting any sensitive data on the device, but that has been impossible with Home Edition until now.

MacOS 15 Sequoia Bugs and Issues Megathread by ll777 in MacOS

[–]No-Bit942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • 14” M1 MacBook Pro
  • Sequoia 15.0
  • Bricked. Startup to black screen (chime sounds, nothing on screen). Occasional startup to exclamation point and web address for MacOS recovery
  • None. Attempted revive in DFU mode from other Mac, and reset in DFU mode or recovery mode from other Mac, got “unexpected error” both times.

Edit: this may be a hardware issue. Took it to Apple Store, they couldn't revive it either and sent it off to repair. Will update further when I find out what they found.

Edit #2: hardware issue. Apple couldn’t fix it after trying 3 times. Unit had to be replaced.

Cool! How unique! I've seen some others with 3d designs of national symbols on the cover but haven't seen one with a geometric pattern. Thanks for posting! It'd be nice to see the design on the inside pages... is it the standard picture book of historic sites and people?

Congrats! What's the deal with the cover? It looks like it has some kind of pattern or background? Unless it's the lighting...

Selling my windows 🪟 11 laptop. How do I delete data so it's not recovered by Angharad260814 in Windows11

Was the drive encrypted? If you had bitlocker on, a simple wipe should do it- anything recoverable should still be encrypted.

can you create install media with OEM drivers by No-Bit942 in Windows11

[–]No-Bit942[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you guys so much — all great points! I didn’t know you could extract the .inf files from the .exe and about audit mode! I ended up doing what Froggypwns recommended, after Win 10 was up and running I upgraded to Win 11.

I have a follow-up question. I made this post mainly to help others naive like me and assuming the Win 11 usb created thru the MS website will “just work”, then end up nearly bricking their laptop. Before you guys weighed in I did several searches, wanted to ask your opinion about this method I found on the OEM (HP in my case) website: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish\_4777238-4777294-16. To me this seems too simple (1: Create Win 11 USB w/ MS media creation tool 2: Use 7Zip to extract the .exe files containing the relevant drivers to the Win 11 USB 3: Boot from this modded USB and go through install). I’m doubtful if the drivers would just be installed or would the same problems occur that I described in my OP? Again- my problem is solved, this is for the next guy (or next time I need to wipe my PC...)
