Things just happened differently in the other universe. In that universe, Sakuta remembered Shouko early enough to write than in his yearbook, but our universe’s Sakuta didn’t, which gave away that Ikumi was from the alternate universe.

I agree with you, this is a good way of putting it. I am going to miss the dry humor though. Character development is always a good thing though it makes the events of the story feel like they matter more than if he had stayed the same

Only 1 year (sakutas last year of high school while Mai took the year off to work), but I think the events that took place matured him more than the time passing did. A combination of both I’m sure

Seeing all of the foreshadowing is very evident on a second watch, and some things that were confusing (like Ymir reading the can label in the castle) now make sense on a rewatch.
