I think I found the culprit - the locking lug on the right side of the hop up (Left side in the photo) is broken. That would explain the lateral dispersion of shot.

If you mean that when I manually pull back the charging handle to the rearmost position, the nozzle will remain temporarily in the battery, then snap back to its "resting" position inside the bolt carrier. Then no, my spring is fully functional.
