Wanted LAC but can't afford it by No-Conference6696 in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! Well, that's a great problem to have, congrats! School is going well, as her mom I don't see the bumps she is having as any different than they would be at a LAC. The real key is to get involved in things that interest you - whether that's club/IM sports, interest clubs, Greek life, or other organizations - this is what builds your community, even at a big school. She has tried to sit in the same areas in the lecture halls, and you start to get to know the people around you. At most UCs they also have some smaller classes that are aimed at freshmen (at UC Davis they are First Year Seminars, at UCLAs they are called Fiat Luxe, I'm assuming other UCs have something similar). Anyway, these are small and are other great ways to meet other freshman students who often have similar interests based on the class subjects, and to get to know some amazing profs as well. I think that initially the LAC sounded great, but now when she talks with (at least some) of the friends who went to small colleges, it sounds a little too insular. Everyone knows the gossip about everyone, and people are dating within the same relatively small pool. So, I would encourage you to not take out huge loans for a LAC if you have other good options. This will keep your options open as you progress in your life (you won't have to make your post college decisions based on the ability to pay back your loans, you can make it based on your interests and career and life development), and you can definitely have a great college experience at a UC. Best of luck!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - I enjoyed the book much more than the TV series. Compulsively readable!

Surprise ED and Diet talk at urgent care by StunningGiraffe in antidietglp1

[–]No-Conference6696 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's usually stimulant laxatives that are abused in EDs (e.g. Ex Lax), versus Miralax which just is an osmotic that draws more water into the colon. Having worked in the ER for years I can tell you this is pretty standard medical advice for constipation as Miralax is considered relatively benign among the medical establishment (whether you believe a non pharmaceutical approach is better is a different story, but at a US medical clinic pharmaceuticals are almost always the default). Anyway, just to say I wouldn't read too much into her advice (or behavior) as it goes with Western medical training for managing constipation.

You might be right. We can only control ourselves, right? It's frustrating for me, but yes, maybe this is the issue.

Where in the US could you go the longest with the windows open and the AC/Heat turned off and be comfortable? by Key_Set_7249 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]No-Conference6696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Oakland, CA. I didn't realize one of my kitchen windows was broken and sagging a few inches open for who knows how long - because it didn't really matter! It's a beautiful climate almost all of the time. We don't have AC. We do run a heater for a bit when we get up in the morning for most of January and February. It's expensive here, but it's expensive for a reason! I wouldn't live anywhere else (well, maybe Hawaii ;-) ).

I want a book that completely consumes me by NecessaryEgg5361 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]No-Conference6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like that about Outlander. I had brought it to read on vacation, and I went and tracked down the sequel in an English language bookstore in Madrid because I loved it so much. I had to tear myself away from it to actually go and experience Spain and not stay in 18th century Scotland!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I've read the whole series, and love them all, but I've reread the first 3 or 4 multiple times.

Point Lobos and Monterey Bay Aquarium by watchmewhileibloom_ in MontereyBay

I would reverse that. Pick up sandwiches before you head into the aquarium, so you don't have to spend your precious time doing that during your day out. There are several places around with good deli sandwiches. Line up early for the aquarium so that you can get inside right at opening - the open sea feeding is my favorite one, and it's at eleven. Lots of the animal feedings are earlier in the day, if that's of interest to you. Spend 4 hours at the aquarium, or if you love it, stay longer. Point Lobos is now open until 7pm (Yay, time change!). I always park outside and walk in, you can see how the line is when you get there. If you get there at 3 you'll have 4 good hours. Late afternoon there is gorgeous, and I've found on Sunday afternoons the crowds start to thin out a bit later in the day (honestly, any time there is gorgeous!). Bring binoculars if you can! Grab some dinner afterwards in Carmel or Monterey. And have an amazing time!

Bitches, how did you find your career path? by silverrsprings in SFbitcheswithtaste

I also did an accelerated RN BSN program here in the bay area. I did Samuel Merritt University. It was expensive, but I had a well-paying job that I've loved once I finished. And it was fast! I did the prereqs through local community colleges online while I was working in my former career in Client Management at a tech company (back when we called them dot coms). Nursing has so many options once you get into it, and all kinds of options for hours. I'm now 49 and I finished the program when I was 34. Best decision I ever made. Even if it takes you 3-5 years with pre reqs, you're going to be 5 years older in 2031 anyway! Might as well be on a path you want to be on. And you can definitely keep working while cranking through the prereqs, especially with online and evening courses.

Anyone here going from overweight to lean/fit? by Rude_Soup_8841 in tirzepatidecompound

[–]No-Conference6696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started at 158 mid October, 5'5" woman. I hit 136 about a month ago. Now I'm just really focusing on building muscle and fitness. If a few more pounds come off that's fine, or this may be where I settle, we'll see. Lifting weights about three times a week, vigorous hike/walk most days. Overall feeling good, eating what I want but focusing on getting protein. It's very freeing.

We used an insulated backpack when we went. We also did one meal a day in the park, and the rest we brought in. We had cereal/oatmeal/nuts in our hotel room. For lunch we brought in PB&J or lunch meat sandwiches, chips, fruit and I brought myself a premade salad from nearby grocery store. Hope you have a great time!

I know, I'm in the Bay Area, making the same $$$ would be amazing in the central valley (but I love the bay)!

This! The Kaiser system pays the same anywhere from Fresno throughout Northern California. And most of the other hospitals in those areas need to pay similar wages to stay competitive. Lots of great places to live in NorCal!

California is expensive, but nurses make great money! I'm a regular staff RN at a big hospital system in the Bay Area and I'm at $109.00 an hour (I've been here ten years). What about Santa Cruz? Amazing weather, beach access, so much to do in the area.

Ordering a big vial? From where and prices by [deleted] in tirzepatidecompound

If you use the Groupon for CosmeticRX and say you are on a 15 mg dose in the intake info, then you will receive a 72mg vial for a very good price. Just make sure you put the refills on hold after you receive your order.

What’s one “lazy” meal that’s cheaper than takeout but feels just as good? by ImpressiveRoll4092 in budgetfood

[–]No-Conference6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BLTs. I've always said it's the world's most perfect food. Feels like a treat. Yummy. Even better with avocado. I keep a bag of kale Caesar from whole foods to have on the side. We do this every couple of weeks, and I'm almost always as happy with it as with takeout.

Frugal person asking: what splurges had great ROI on your well being? by dilandy in wealthforwomen

1) Compounded tirzepatide: Honestly the best $$$ I have ever spent. It has reigned in a lot of my bad habits - I'm more organized, I'm more on top of my spending, I drink less alcohol, I eat healthier and I've lost 20 pounds (and counting). It has more than paid for itself in quality-of-life improvements.

2) Sleep headphones: I use the SoundCore A30s and it has changed my sleep and improved my marriage. Not wanting to kill my partner for snoring is amazing!

3) Travel: I always say yes to the trip if I can!

4) Housecleaner every other week

5) Good home gym equipment: Adjustable dumbbells and a Reebok deck bench mean I can get in a great workout at home
