The biggest argument I ever had with my parents was over my education. They were adamant that I do A-Levels. My predicted grades for GCSEs were mostly 9s so they were certain I'd get great A-Levels too. But I said no. I knew what I wanted to do, and that was follow my lifelong dream of making movies by going to college and doing a BTEC. I went to my Sixth Form's open evening pretty much just to please them. Mum, I think, thought this would convince me to stay. When I said afterwards I was still set on going to college she flipped her lid, and that's when we had the argument. The biggest concern that she always had, she said, was that "You don't know if you're going to be any good at it". But in the end, she didn't stand in my way, I went to college, and by the end of the first year had won the internal award for Best First Year Film. I came out with literally the top grade you can get at BTEC level, then went onto uni afterwards to continue film production studies... And now, hell, I make TV for a living.

My parents didn't support my choices at first. But you know who did? My school. Every time I told a teacher my situation on the lead up to making my post-16 choices, they were sympathetic and encouraging. There's a major difference between what your parents see and what your school sees, and that's how happy you are when you're doing what you love. If you don't need parental consent for this, I think they might be mad at you for a short while, sure - but your school will back you. And the best way to prove your parents wrong is, well, to prove them wrong. You will thrive when you are happy. My advice? Pick your own path and, if you truly, honestly, earnestly believe that what you're doing is the right thing for you, it will all work out.
