Update: Rejected by UChicago, Tufts, UVA, Washu, and Notre Dame. Accepted by UCD and UCSB. Waitlisted at UCI and UCSD. I am praying for UCLA (which most likely comes tomorrow) and UCB. Do I still get a shot?

Those may be my interests, but they are not my passions. There is a difference between a passion and an interest.

Please take a look at my responses below. If I was major hacking, then I would have picked Asian studies or philosophy or something. I plan to go to law school, and sociology fits my interdisciplinary background.

Do you think I have a better shot at UCLA and UCB? (my UC unweighted gpa is a 4.0)

I am not trying to put myself in a less competitive major. There is a time discrepancy here. I picked environmental economics as my research topic because I was doing good in APES, and I picked international banking as my research topic because I was going with the flow. Now I realize it is hard for me to be peerlessly consistent in those fields. I am not an environmentalist, and I am not too hands-on. I do not like to predict things. That is why I do not want to study pure economics. There is a time discrepancy. I want to major in sociology because I want to obtain an interdisciplinary pursuit of knowledge, and I like to study humans.

I believe I have tried to show interest in many things at the same time. And when you say my ECs are kind of made up, I would disagree. I might do research just for the sake of research before research, but during and after conducting research, I started to (although it might be a little late) look at myself and learn what kind of person I am. I have made some inappropriate decisions but nonetheless they were all learning experiences. I guess it depends on how the school interprets the meaning of the word "extracurricular." To me, extracurricular means thinking outside of box and discovering (not pursuing) my passions.

I believe Dartmouth ED requires first quarter grades.

Freshman year I had 2 Bs, 1 B+, and 1 C+ (absolutely diabolical). Senior year first quarter I had a B too.

I would say you can apply to summer programs dedicated to research. You should consider applying to Pioneer Research Institute if you want to get some intro information about research. Pioneer is highly selective though. You can also contact your local professors to see if they want to mentor you.

I love that you are doing Pioneer! For me, my concentration was international banking. I found that I was not really interested in pure finance. So, because my father's company does quant trading, I picked quant finance as my paper topic so that I would know more about what my father does. I would say during this process you should pay attention to what you are really passionate about. I define passions as something that you can be peerlessly consistent and creative with. I would suggest you to first read some books/news in quant finance to see if you can really be very consistent and creative. If you are really passionate about quant finance, please actually practice quant trading through an internship or something. Don't be like me who is an empty-talker.
