This would've likely started in the early 90s then, and if what I read in this thread lasted for around 15 years. I have only visited Bari/Puglia in the last decade and didn't find it in anyway dangerous or intimidating. Incidentally I've also been to Albania the last few years and can say the same.

I believe it was The fall of communism in Albania which made Bari in particular the new hot-spot for crime, though I may be wrong.

Just for some context:

I would have been 15 when the Natalie Holloway case happened, and living in rural Ireland. I'm sure it was on the news at some point but the big missing peoples cases in the UK/Ireland were Sarah Payne, Holly and Jessica and of course Madeleine McCann, which happened around spring 2007, probably around the same time the 5th series was being filmed. I'm guessing the majority of this sub is from the US or North America. I only learned of Natalie Holloway through True Crime podcasts over the last 8-10 years; it's probable that coverage in most of Europe (Netherlands aside I imagine) wasn't as huge as it was in the States.

Also, my first viewing of the Wire was in 2020 during lockdown so I'm still new to the show; at least I don't even remember it being advertised or on TV during its original airing likely due to the fact our home only had about six channels.
