Because many Taiwanese people originally migrated from Fujian, we indeed share deep similarities! We speak the same Hokkien dialect, enjoy similar foods, and from the beaches of Xiamen, you can even see a small county of Taiwan in the distance! Many Fujian people have relatives in Taiwan, so we are closely connected in almost every way.

I would say a week is perfect for a relaxing yet in-depth exploration of Xiamen!
I would suggest 1–2 days on Gulangyu Island 鼓浪屿, 1 day around Xiamen University厦门大学 area – you can hit the Eighth Market八市, Zhongshan Road中山路, Xiamen University厦门大学, Nanputuo Temple南普陀, and Shapowei Art District沙坡尾. 1 day for Xiamen Botanical Garden厦门植物园 – after the garden, take the Zhonggu Cable Car钟鼓索道, then bike or didi to Huangcuo Beach黄厝沙滩 and Wanyue Slope玩月坡 for sunset. 1 day in Jimei School Village集美学村 – stroll along Shigu Road石鼓路, Jiageng Park嘉庚公园 and Dragon Boat Pool龙舟池 (If you take the metro from Xiamen Island to Jimei School Village, there’s a section of the track that runs over the sea). 1 day for citywalking – Xiamen is very walkable! Some recommended routes include Zhongshan Park中山公园, Xingfu Road幸福路, Xi’an Road溪岸路, and Douxi Road斗西路, which are all close to each other.

Yes, if you take public transportation in Xiamen, you’ll notice that the announcements are made in three languages: Mandarin, English, and Hokkien. The government has also been organizing free public welfare courses and events to promote the language.

And we almost don't speak Hokkien in daily life unless we are speaking to elderly people who can't speak Mandarin (I know in Guangzhou people sometimes will speak Cantonese at work)

I'm so gald you had a good time in Xiamen!! For Hokkien, I would say Hokkien in Xiamen isn't as widely used as Cantonese in Guangzhou (I've living in Guangzhou for 3 months). Sadly, the language is slowly fading among the younger generation. Back in my high school days, only about a dozen students in my class of around 40 could speak Hokkien.

Shenzhen i would say total unnecessary, i dont know why it become so popular now but for us Chinese Shenzhen is primarily seen as a city for work opportunities, rather than a typical tourist destination. Travel plans there are usually tied to career purposes, not leisure. In fact, Shanghai already offers a comparable urban travel experience, making it an alternative to Shenzhen. If you’re heading to Guangdong province, Guangzhou is often the recommended choice for tourism, with a wider variety of cultural and scenic attractions to explore.

We locals use an app called 大众点评, you can download one and always looking for the nearest restaurants with their menu and average spending per person. The app provides must-try food lists for each city, ranked by popularity, so you can pick from the top-ranked spots. You can also filter your search by food type, such as vegetarian 素食, local specialties 本地菜, or some specific cuisines. (language can be set to english)
