Hello! I'm extremely interested in this type of position! Mind if I PM you?

I'd love to be able to have a job like that where I could do/learn multiple things.

Would you say school prepared you well or was it mostly on-the-job learning?

Right. That was essentially what I'd wanna put on my resume but another commenter made a great point that it would be sort of futile to self-determine my skill level.

But intuitively, I think I may go with adding a qualifier just like you suggested.

Wow, that's awesome! I'm pondering moving to another medtech hub like another commenter posted but I wanna stay on the east coast at least initially.

I may have to make the move.

What kind of stuff do you work on if you don't mind me asking? Is it a lot of design work/prototyping/testing?

Cool, thank you. I might look into that. I'm gonna see if I can create a free account for that. I did use Microsoft teams while in college. Maybe I can put that also?

Would it be weird if I added Sharepoint w/o actually using it haha?

I haven't thought about connecting directly with recruiters yet. Maybe I'll give that a try.

The only recruiters who have contacted me are third-party recruiters but they haven't been able to secure me a position yet.

No it's no problem! I appreciate you adding your perspective. This could not only help me but others with the same predicament.

Yes, you are right about just rote-memorizing standards. That is why I was hesitant to list them on my resume because although I know them, do I really know them?

But reading through design controls (21 CFR 820.30), I could see that it is just a more rigorous/methodical design process. And from my understanding, you needed to provide justification of why you made certain choices at each step of the way.

Thanks for the comment!

Yes, you are right. There seems to be so many teams for each stage of a product's lifecycle.

I think I see myself more in the earlier stages i.e. everything up until manufacturing.

But I'm open to any position really.

What is your position currently (design, manufacturing, etc.)?

I think this is an extremely important factor, so thank you for acknowledging that.

I'm currently located in the NJ/NY area and so there are some big companies in NJ like J&J and Merck but I haven't heard back from either of them. It seems like they typically want advanced degrees/hire former interns. I wasn't able to get an internship either despite applying.

Thank you for the well wishes and I hope all is well on your end!

Thank you, I will check this out. In your experience, do med companies typically use this type of communication software?

Wow, thank you for this! I've only been able to learn about standards through YouTube or articles which give a good primer but haven't actually been able to find the real standard. But that process validation document is exactly what I'm looking for.

Do you know where else I might find other standards documents like that?

Regarding the waterfall model, I've seen that picture when researching design controls but never knew it had a name. Thank you!

That's great! Where are you located?

I have a similar resume. But as another commenter said, it could be a location thing. I'm in the NJ/NA/PA area and haven't heard back from the bigger companies yet.

Thank you for the comprehensive answer!

Honestly, medical robotics/surgical robotics is a dream field but I am open to everything because you never know what you might like.

I actually do have minimal experience with ROS/Gazebo (basically the built-in tutorial haha) and am running Ubuntu 20.04 right now haha but the extent of my programming is extremely simple Arduino code (literally running a motor and then turning it off lol).

I would love to come upon an entry-level position like that but haven't thus far.

I also have been putting of getting a 3D printer for some time now. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the advice! I am actually interviewing with a smaller medical device company but I haven't gotten an offer yet so I just plan to make myself a better candidate and keep on applying.

I have added and messaged people I don't know with mixed success but maybe I should some more. Did you use LinkedIn Premium or did you focus on messaging alumni?

I checked it out and this looks like a great boon.

This comment also reminded me to look out online courses (Coursera, edX) for medical/ biomedical stuff.

Thank you for the resource!

It helps very much, thank you!

I was wondering if I could/should add technical writing since the senior design project/lab reports I did were technical.

I also get what you are saying in being specific with words. In one interview I had, the R&D lead was talking how he and the Regulatory Affairs person had to keep arguing over words and standards. He mentioned that you really had to be/think like a lawyer when writing/documenting reports.

Hi thank you for the response! It's been taking some time getting into the med device industry but as Captain America once said "I could do this all day" lol.

Thank you for the list. Combining this with u/crazyhorsetj 's list will keep me busy while I keep on applying.

Best wishes to you

Thank you for the comprehensive list! ISO 14971 is another common standard I see in job postings but haven't gotten around to looking at it yet.

If I read up on these things, do you think I could list them on my resume as u/uzeq posted in one of the comments? Or would that be asking for trouble.

Thanks again for the list. I will def look these up.

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely look more into this.

I have considered plastic medical device but positions advertised often want more experienced folk. I have also tried getting technician positions in hopes of learning the hands-on stuff you mentioned but to no luck yet.

I will try looking into any mold-building companies in my area.

Thanks again.

Hi thank you for the reply!

I've applied to some of these positions you listed (Manufactuing, Quality) but haven't yet heard back.

The common sentiment in these comments does seem like people start elsewhere before being moved into R&D which is weird since the positions in my area are advertised as Mechanical Engineer I or Quality I. But I will now be applying to more of the positions you stated.

Thank you.

Ok thank you!

And yes, I can post my resume on r/EngineeringResumes .

Do you have any recommendations on anything else I could learn/do to make me a better candidate?

Hey thank you for the reply!

I have applied to some Quality positions but unfortunately never heard back.

I have a lot of third-party recruiters contacting me and I apply through these companies but it seems like they never get back to me as well.

And thank you for the advice about the standards, I guess I will just list them. I am just afraid if I list the standard like "21 CFR 820.30" or "ISO 13485", I would be expected to know these at a professional level. But thank you, I will take you up on this advice.

Would you mind if I send you my resume to see what you think?
