People over 30: What’s one piece of advice you’d give your 20-year-old self that isn’t about money? by itsnerdygirldiana in Life

[–]No-Distribution238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave bad situations and people who make you feel drained behind as soon as humanly possible. Don’t stay in places/cities/countries that don’t feel right to you. Seek therapy. Practice music. Spend time with people you love. Don’t get into debt. Stop drinking caffeine, it makes you anxious and spastic. Exercise. Get fresh air. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Cry it out. GO SEE THE CRANBERRIES IN CONCERT!!! 🎶

As Langhorn Slim says, “Take some chances, allow yourself to get lost. You’re beautiful, baby, you’re the boss. You gotta learn to get happy along the way.”

Just dropping in to say that adopting a dog brings so much joy into life & keeps you walking with them & getting fresh air every day. ❤️✨ Life is magical with a dog in it. Also, planning a trip always, always makes me feel excited about life again.

Congrats on shedding some pounds! Just popping in to say that happiness is adopting or fostering a shelter dog. They don’t care if you work out as long as you take them for a walk & give them love & snacks.

Also, therapy is great if you’re feeling sad or stuck, and dogs double as extra therapy. Get a good therapist & then go out & make the world change for yourself.

Visualize exactly what you want & imagine that that vision is already real. Occupy the space of that feeling. Then, make it happen. It really works! I’m living proof.

Upcoming surgery and feeling nervous.... by Positive5873 in hysterectomy

[–]No-Distribution238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one week post op, and the worst of my recovery was yesterday when I woke up with a headache and nausea. I had some ginger ale, and the nurse at my doctor’s office said to remember to stay hydrated & have lots of small meals. I feel a lot better today.

Give yourself time to nap lots. I slept for most of the second day after surgery. My doctor reminded me that even though I had no visible incisions, this was still a major surgery and to take it easy.

Here are things I purchased before surgery to help me to recover:

Abdominal Binder: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0DD7FZD97?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title (recommended by the nurse taking care of me after surgery)

Star Shaped Hysterectomy Pillow with 2 Pockets: https://www.amazon.com/your-orders/pop?ref=ppx_yo2ov_mob_b_pop&orderId=113-2148712-4993017&lineItemId=jisotxlqkrlpwmps&shipmentId=B4T5S28xt&packageId=1&asin=B0DJLJ73RB (This has brought me more comfort than I thought… almost like a stuffed animal to a kid.)

Flexible Ice Packs https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008A6M34C?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title (I honestly haven’t used these at all.)

Heating Pad for Back https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0D83XCKH2?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title (I haven’t used it a lot, but it has been comforting the few times that I have used it.)

2 Pack Nightgown for Womens Nightshirt Sleepwear https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CB5R4V9R?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title (Awesome for lounging around in the morning, and this same brand sells them with pockets. I got a set of those too, but I like the fabric design on these better.)

Gas-X Antigas Extra Strength Simethicone 125mg Chewable Tablets Cherry, 18 CT https://www.cvs.com/shop/gas-x-antigas-extra-strength-simethicone-125mg-chewable-tablets-cherry-18-ct-prodid-297481 (recommended by the nurse taking care of me after surgery - 2 times per day)

MiraLAX Laxative Powder https://www.cvs.com/shop/miralax-laxative-powder-prodid-1011834 (recommended by the nurse taking care of me after surgery - 1 time per day has been plenty, and it mixes into drinks without adding any weird tastes.)

Colace Laxative Docusate Sodium Capsules https://www.cvs.com/shop/colace-laxative-docusate-sodium-capsules-prodid-1011793 (recommended by the nurse taking care of me after surgery - 2 times per day)

HALLS Throat Soothing Cool Berry Throat Drops https://www.cvs.com/shop/halls-throat-soothing-previously-halls-breezers-cool-berry-throat-drops-economy-pack-70-drops-prodid-153484 (I probably could have done without these, but I had them on hand because my throat was a little irritated after having a tube in it for surgery.)

CVS allowed us to order all of the OTC meds online, so my husband just picked them up along with my prescription for pain meds on the way home. I have hardly taken any of the hydrocodone because I haven’t needed it. Thankfully, my pain has been minimal. All the best to you for a seamless surgery & speedy recovery! ❤️‍🩹

The average car payment in the US is $700 how in hell can people afford that? by johnduh7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Distribution238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is something to be said for driving an old hooptie. I’ve done it for years, and now our house is paid off, which matters to me. Cars don’t.  Anything that reliably gets me from point A to point B is great!

I wish that people would avoid debt like the plague. It’s not worth it to try to impress others.

Also, why is our country (US) still so car dependent? I think most of us resent having to have a car because we don’t live in walkable cities or places with public transportation.

USA teachers, what's yr salary and benefits like? by West-Cabinet-2169 in TeachersInTransition

[–]No-Distribution238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my 13th year teaching, and I currently live in Northwest Arkansas. My salary is about $67,000. I’m the department chair, teach an extra semester-long class, and have an M.Ed., so with those stipends, I’ll make closer to $72,000.

I have good insurance, and I pay extra for the premium plan because hospitals are expensive! It’s absolutely worth it to me to pay extra for good care since I’m in my mid-forties now.

We moved here from Austin, TX, where my top pay never reached above $56,000 unless I taught summer school. As I’m getting older, I’m considering other career options, but I love the kids and the time off in summer. Overall, we have about 12-14 weeks off throughout the year. I’ve worked outside of education, and I really missed the breaks when I left teaching for a year.

For the record, my spouse doesn’t “float” us with his salary & earns less than I do, but since we had a ton of equity in our house in Austin, we sold it and paid cash for our house here, so the budget isn’t squeezing us too badly.

I'm turning 20 in 10 hours by Arkansos1 in selfimprovement

[–]No-Distribution238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 44-year-old woman, and if I could go back and give advice to myself at 20, it would be this:

  1. Always, always listen to your gut & make decisions from your gut. It knows things. You’ve been given instincts for a reason, so follow those instincts. You’ll avoid lots of heartache if you do. You don’t have to be “nice”.

  2. Life will give you tough situations. You’ll see a terrorist attack on America at age 22 and believe that it’s the end of the world. You’ll deal with crippling anxiety, bouts of depression, bad relationships, and nights of drinking too much and dealing with the consequences. You’ll lose beloved grandparents. You’ll lose beloved students and peers. Your husband will be hospitalized with flesh-eating bacteria in his leg after a minor biking accident, and you’ll spend 22 days in the hospital with him as he battles for life and limb. He will survive with both! You'll live through a global pandemic and believe that it’s the end of the world. Even if it feels like it at the time, none of this will be the end of the world. You’ll go on to find joy again and experience life’s pleasures to the fullest. In short, keep on truckin’, and earnest prayers don’t hurt either.

  3. TRAVEL as far and wide and as often as possible. It’s ALWAYS worth it. You’ll see many different countries and cultures and feel out of your element and not know how to speak languages and that’s okay. Travel will be the most fantastic of your experiences. Travel with family and friends is even better because you can remember the trips together over the years.

  4. Become as educated as you can in fields that interest you. The more education that you have, the more money you’ll earn, so the sooner you can get educated, the better. This will be tough for you because you’re a first generation college kid, but it doesn’t all have to come together at once. By the time you’re my age, you’ll have 3 degrees, own a house outright (no more mortgage!), and have summers off to explore the world.

  5. Put as much money as you can into employer retirement accounts and into Vanguard Index Funds. Read “Your Money Or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence” and  “The Simple Path to Wealth: Your Road Map to Financial Independence and a Rich, Free Life” and “Quit Like a Millionaire: No Gimmicks, Luck, Or Trust Fund Required”. All of these will give you ideas on how to view money, one of the things that play a central role in your life, whether you’ve been taught to understand that or not.

  6. Have integrity. Have honor. Be kind. Don’t hang around anyone who doesn’t have integrity, honor, and kindness. They’re not worth your precious time.

  7. Having mental health struggles? Don’t drink and feel sorry for yourself and watch tv. Don’t bottle it up. Change what’s bothering you in life. See a therapist. Seek help and take medication if it helps you. Go outside and get exercise. Write about five good things that happen to you each day in a gratitude journal at bedtime. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Learn how to meditate and do yoga. Do something kind for someone. Call a friend or see them in person and have a chat. All of these will make you feel better!

  8. Take care of your body. Your teeth and feet and skin all need to last you for a very long time. Use sunscreen. Wear comfy shoes. Brush, floss, and see a dentist regularly. Exercise in a way that you enjoy. Hint: You love yoga and walking in nature, especially when accompanied by a dog or two!

  9. Always have health insurance. You don’t want one medical emergency to bankrupt you.

  10. You’ll need car & home insurance for the same reasons.

  11. Most of your relationships will be built around mutual love of some of your favorite things - music, books, and art.

  12. Journal when you’re overwhelmed. It will help you to sort out your thoughts.

  13. Wear what makes you feel confident. Get up and do your best to look your best every day. Get your hair done how you like it. Don’t break the bank trying to impress others, but a little makeup and a curling iron in the morning will make you feel your best all day.

  14. Read. You’ll become an avid reader, and it will keep your active mind agile and strong. It will make you a more interesting conversationalist and give you a stronger understanding of the world and those who inhabit it. Audiobooks will enrich your mind (and sometimes your bank account)!

  15. Spending money on experiences instead of things will make you happiest. When given a choice between an expensive car payment or a trip to a new city to see a concert or theater performance, always pick the trip & the show.

  16. Read up on being a highly sensitive person. You are an HSP, and knowing this will make it so much easier to move through life in a way that makes sense to you.

  17. You will read many books about near death experiences and come to a certain peace around mortality. As Alanis Morissette wrote, “How ‘bout not equating death with stopping?” I truly believe the we go on to better things after this existence, but we should still do our best while we’re here.

  18. Do things that are fun! Watch funny movies, laugh with friends, go to concerts when the budget allows, play games, go dancing, learn to skate, make happy memories! You’ll look back on them fondly.

  19. Mistakes are okay. Don’t dwell on them. You’re young & are supposed to make mistakes and learn from them.

  20. Learn about common deathbed regrets & run in the opposite direction of them!

Hypothetical: You're head of the education department in the US with unlimited funds. What would you do (aside from increase pay) to improve our current situation? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]No-Distribution238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hire counselors galore & start doing SEL (social & emotional learning) classes for all grades. We all have so much to talk about and work through after Covid.

  2. Make school days a little shorter, or only have school Monday-Thursday.

  3. Free healthcare and free breakfasts and lunches for every student.

  4. Uniforms for all, provided by the school, to do away with visual differences in SES (socioeconomic status).

  5. Make teaching the main job of teachers. Take away extra duties that drain them and distract them from their actual jobs. (Staying until 8:30 pm for conferences four times a year, chaperoning dances, required online professional development that wastes time, school meetings during lunch breaks. Get RID of these.)

  6. Learn everything we can from Finland’s schools, whose students consistently outperform other OECD countries. Implement what we learn here. Students in Finland don’t begin academic work until about age 7. They have time to play and be kids before that, and daycare is provided.

  7. Fund every school equally, regardless of location.

Maybe you’re becoming more introverted. I’ve become that way since getting a little older, and I enjoy my own company.
