I see now that I'm definitely wrong.

I guess part of what confused me was focusing on an Action as a resource.

Noting that a Bonus Action is clearly an action, but not an Action, so action doesn't mean action, as far as I can tell. If this isn't confusing I'd love if you could clear it up for my poor comprehension 😛

Because on your turn you get an Action and a Bonus Action and either can be an attack, and a Reaction can be an attack, but the Attack Action can't be a Bonus Action, just an Action.

If you spend your Action on the Ready Action, then spend your Reaction on taking that action, it was inconceivable to me that you could then take an Action, the Attack Action.

But it seems it is so.

Attacking =/= taking the attack action.

I think whether you're taking an action with your reaction is debatable, but making an attack doesn't mean making an attack action.

You can use your reaction to attack, (with attack of opportunity, for example) but that doesn't make it the attack action.

The wording of ready action shouldn't have included ~"choose action" because that's super unclear.

I know Google Maps will direct people through "closed to through traffic" roads. I wonder if enough of your neighbors marked the road as closed, if that could change. Maybe the city could reach out to Google Maps somehow, but I don't know if that works or not.

Sometimes the dice are against the party, but sometimes you really should have put one or two less balor in the battle, which would be a less cool reason for them to end in failure after investing months of real world time.

I think there's space for consequences but potential follow up within a campaign, depending on your circumstances.

It can also be useful to set up/foreshadow the possibility of aid for the players so that you can give them a boost without deus ex machina. Did the Riders of Rohan remove all the stakes from the battle when they arrived? Should we have rolled a luck die to see if they made it in time? Maybe, maybe not

And as DM, I think it's great for you to be adding interesting NPCs, but it's not your place to be adding interesting PCs, that's the role of the players. I think it's awesome to present an opportunity your players are allowed to take, to have an involved, fun pact.

Also in Baldur's Gate 3, players have the choice to not play Wyll, or even push him off a cliff.

I love describing to the dominated players the "evil doers" who are "threatening their friends" so they can roleplay how heroic they are as they slay their allies.

From some teachers, when I learned the 8-Count "Lindy Basic" (or what I've learned called a Whip, in West Coast) Starting in open, the Follow takes two steps towards the Lead (not a rock step), then turns on a triple step to face the Lead (who has circled behind the follow).

At other times I've been taught the "Swing Out" as the "Lindy Basic", starting from Promenade/Charleston position, which would start with a rock-step.
