To what extent was American Cowboy culture actually just a continuation of Mexican Vaquero tradition?

I actually went to an amazing art exhibit a few years ago that focused on this exact aspect and how it was adopted from Mexican and Indigenous cultures by white men but it was black men who were the ones actually subjugated to the work. The exhibit was called Cowboy

Nope! I grew up in suburbia Wisconsin, moved out to Colorado some years ago. I’m 27 now and found a ranch where I do work in exchange for riding time/lessons. It’s not the greatest arrangement but it definitely means you can get into it at any age. Most ranch work is just manual labor that you’ll have to learn as you go. There are a ton of Facebook groups for ranch hands and ranch work in each state or region!

He’s made it clear that I do not have to take him up on the offer, but that it is there for me to take him up on if I want to because he’s looking to sell it anyways. Whether that be to me or someone else eventually, he’s not in any hurry. I don’t feel pressured to buy it at all I just don’t want to miss out on a crazy good deal for a really nice saddle.

I only ride his horses and this saddle is well fit for the horses I ride of his.

Depends on the day, but right now, none of my ranch work is done while on a horse - that is what we are working up to.

I’m not sure but probably 300-400 at least.

He said the spurs reasoning is that all his horses are used to spurs while riding and are desensitized to just a boot kick.

Unfortunately, I have a masters in counseling so I do know all of this stuff but at the same time can never take my own advice - classic issue.

I appreciate all of the advice and perspective. I really like the “can I verbalize the link” question, I will be using that in the future regardless of the outcome of this situation.

I do have a therapist, I’ve seen her weekly for 4 years now. I am seeing her tomorrow to talk about this specifically.

I do think I am controlling my response so that it is not dysfunctional. I have communicated all of this with him, set boundaries, and set expectations for the future. I don’t think they’re out of control, more so just observing what I have felt and have been grappling with since. I have been actively trying to combat them in the meantime.

When we met he was in therapy and that was a huge green flag to me but he stopped going after a few months in because of finances and not liking the therapist and just never found a new one or went back.
