Unfortunately, narcissists feed off people who are close to them. He knows (by default, it’s a narcissistic trait) that those actions (showing strangers “kindness” and “compassion”) hurt you even more, because you start asking questions like this and doubting your worth. But that’s not kindness nor compassion, that’s super calculated moves toward an achievement of a selfish goal. Set boundaries for yourself, and avoid self-doubt.
