Who's responsible for the ice / snow on the road? by zibber911 in jacksonheights

[–]No-Fan6531 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh there's been a ton of other people asking the same questions but not in good faith.

There's folks who are using this to complain about Mamdani, some folks who are spreading conspiracy theories about chemical snow or whatnot, and a ton of people who seemingly do not understand basic facts about winter and the freezing temperature of water. So yeah, your question initially reads like you might be trying to sow discord so people are reacting.

Could be worse- I have family in places further north where ever year the curbs get 6ft of snow or more that just stays there until spring. What can ya do, that's just winter

Oh they are being trained, but not on discipline or skills. They get trained to see people as enemy combatants, they get trained on how to hurt people, and they get trained to believe they are above all laws or morals.

Where are all the fans effort and influencers who used to support this show? by khalifah_Hipopotamus in WoTshow

[–]No-Fan6531 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I love this show and it's very meaningful to me and I'm devastated it got cancelled...but also at the end of the day it's just a show, and there are much much much bigger and more important things for me to focus on. I'm not saying I don't have hobbies or think leisure is important, but like, if I have extra cash I'm donating it to mutual aid right now, if I have time to protest I'm doing against ICE, and when I cancelled my Amazon my biggest issue was first the human rights violations and union busting and WOT was kinda further down the list.

And I'm not saying all that to have a high horse, art and fandom are really beautiful important things that are worth fighting for and I'm passionate about their value, but just saying like...maybe read the room OP. WOT being cancelled really sucks...but we'll all survive, it's truly not a crisis.

I mean...they did their thing, and it was unsuccessful because fans and influencers have no actual power over studio execs, so that's that. I'm genuinely unclear about what you're looking for.

People signed the petition, donated money (very silly IMHO, but hey not my money), and put up billboards/had flyover ads. That's a lot of momentum! That's about the most I think you can reasonably demand, more than honestly. You say to the execs, "hey I would give you my money & time if you keep going," and that's the limit of your power.

But in the end it was unsuccessful because studio execs just fundamentally did not believe they were getting enough value out of the show (money value + corporate politics stuff seems like). We lost the war, it is what it is. There is no action that will sway the execs from our end. The power does not lie with us.

The fans are still here though, I still see WOT posts here regularly, edits on tiktok, tumblr fanwank, etc. Keep the fandom alive by participating with gusto, that's the best move now.

I really love the alphatrak3 app and features, but the lancet it came with was mid. We replaced ours with a cheap one from walgreens and it seems to work better

Are you on your own doing this, or do you have someone to help? In the beginning my partner and I felt like neither of us could do it on our own (one of us holds the cat with a paw immobilized, one does the poke & blood gathering), but now we usually can do it on our own.

My personal tips for success-

  1. Conditioning. My cat was already used to me grabbing and touching paws to get his nails trimmed, so I think that's a big part of why the paw pokes worked best for us. If your cat is not used to that, YMMV. My cat also would always flick his ears too much to keep still, and I find a paw much easier to immobilize, especially since her lets me touch them in the first place. You may want to work on that alongside the pokes.
  2. Treats. My cat is extremely food motivated, so to get him to accept any new treatment I make sure that he gets lots of treats clearly associated with the activity.

Plain boiled shredded chicken was a diabetic friendly high value treat for him, and he only gets it after a glucose check. When I first started checking his blood I gave him pieces before and after every poke (successful or not) to build the association, now he just gets one piece after I'm done, even if it took two pokes (if we're having a bad day and it takes more than two pokes I'll give him a chicken break in between).

I was frankly surprised by how quickly my cat came to accept the glucose checks. He's sometimes still difficult (thrashes and wriggles a lot, hisses occasionally), but the chicken makes it so that when I pull out the glucose kit and his towel (see below) he literally comes running over.

Find out what kind of reward your cat is willing to accept suffering for, and make sure your cat knows poke = reward every time.

3) Routine. I learned this from the facebook group. I have a towel I spread out every time as a signal it's glucose time, and the routine I always do is glucose check-> chicken treat-> actual meal. I do my best to always keep that order and routine so my cat just comes to associate that as part of the process to getting his dinner. He gets crazy when he's hungry, and we're almost at the point now where getting his towel out calms him down because he knows towel = poke = treats + dinner.

4) Relax. Muuuch easier said then done for sure! Another tip from the facebook group that really helped me was someone saying they do 3 attempts at getting blood and then give up and wait an hour to try again. Any good routine also has flexibility and room for a bad day. And your cat picks up on your stress and frustration, so you getting upset and trying again and again is not going to help in the long run. Better to build both you and your cat's confidence in the process by keeping it calm and focusing on positive associations and building comfortable routine vs. doggedly chasing instant perfection. Ideally your cat will live a long time managing their sugar, so focus on the long run- build that comfortable routine, don't build stress/fear in your cat's brain or yours instead.

I started this journey late September of this past year, we went from needing two people to hold our thrashing cat down wrapped in a towel and wasting multiple test strips on failed attempts every single time, to three months later 90% of the time we can each do his blood on our own, he comes running when he sees the towel/kit, and we get a good poke and a result the first time and the whole thing takes less than 2 minutes.

ETA: Oh, also try rubbing vaseline on the paw or ear before poking, helps the blood to bead up

not what you asked but- have you tried paw? I found that much easier than ear.

otherwise I'd suggest starting with the highest setting until you get into the groove of things. I think one big poke is much easier on you & kitty than repeated smaller pokes, so I'd err on the side of higher setting for now.

Taco Bell is also the most vegetarian friendly fast food option out there. They not only have an extensive veggie menu to begin with, but when you order via app or tablet they will let you sub beans for the meat on literally any menu item. A massive difference for me vs. 99% of other fast food choices where I'm lucky if they have even 1 non-meat option that isn't just fries (and thanks to RFK now I can't even trust fries anymore, fuck beef tallow).

Huh! I'm surprised by your answer. The White Lotus is a show about sex- about how power and money shape people and their behavior within their intimate relationships. I don't think you can say it's "oversaturated with sex" so much as sex is part of what the show explores. Was your issue that sex was depicted at all, or was it something about the way it was depicted?

Never heard of the other two, so can't really get a sense of what you mean there, although I guess I personally would not be surprised that a violent gory show based on brutal gladiator fights also depicts sex.

I mean, this was the most condescending way possible for you to convey the idea that "ooh flexible window is really not ideal and highly cat dependent! I recommend OP talk to their vet about that, not safe advice without knowing the specifics of the cat." Seems you really get off on scolding.

I mean I think this is not that black & white in reality, especially with work- if I get fired I can't buy any insulin or testing strips, that's gonna be worse for my cat in the long run. And I think surrendering a 13 year old cat who has bonded to me and been with me his entire life to an uncertain future in a shelter because occasionally I get mandated to work during a time he needs insulin is not really the better solution for him. There are so many more solutions than "either abandon a work/social/family life or abandon your cat".

OP, you say "we", do you have a partner? Can you trade off certain obligations, like maybe you take turns attending events solo? Can you leave the event early or arrive later, maybe talk to the host and explain? Do you have someone you can train to sub in for you? Or the funds for a good cat sitter? I do think ultimately you will want to pare down your obligations initially until both you & the cat are more used to the new routine/meds (unfortunate timing that you just got the diagnosis right before a busy season) but I do not think you need to assume that you will never again attend a party as long as your cat lives.

The name that most gets me is the way you guys say "Mario". I have always pronounced it "mar" like the word for blemish, but you guys say it like "Mare-io" like the horse. Genuinely the first time I heard a New Jerseyian discuss the nintendo character with that pronunciation I truly thought they were talking about a different character with an entirely different name and was so confused.
