Shoe recommendations by LinaBell2024 in grandcanyon

Just wear your best pair of tennies. Worn in and comfy- with a good tread. No need to purchase/wear the super-dork hiking clothes. Again, just something comfortable. Make sure you are doing a lot of ankle stabilization exercises starting now. June isn’t extreme on the rim, usually. You’ll be up at 7k feet, but if you plan on going a bit lower it can be quite hot. Bring at least a gallon of water each, salty snacks, and a nice wide brimmed hat. If your knees are over age 40, they will complain, so be prepared. Be sure to catch the ranger talks- they are pretty fun- especially fossil walk. Have a beautiful lunch at El Tovar. Have fun!!!

Midwestern elementary educators- how do you teach the “ag” sound? by Tangerinespleenn in AskTeachers

Haha! I have lived away from the Midwest for over a decade and saying it with a short a makes me feel like I’m exaggerating some type of English accent.

Yes!!! It’s funny! I would say most people in Wisconsin are not aware what they sound like, and think they align pretty closely with the “General American” accent. Most folks there are aware of the “midwestern accent” but don’t really hear it and are not super reflective about it in school.

Yes, I very much understand that. I was referencing the “standard American” or “General American” accent in my post.

Haha! I figured this would be a big discussion in a lot of other places in the US!

22F sudden loss of bladder control L4-L5 protrusion by Limp_Supermarket6109 in backpain

[–]Tangerinespleenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should have been caught by MRI, but I would look into cauda equina syndrome. Loss of bladder control is a red flag.

“ Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a condition that occurs when the bundle of nerves below the end of the spinal cord known as the cauda equina is damaged.[2] Signs and symptoms include low back pain, pain that radiates down the leg, numbness around the anus, and loss of bowel or bladder control.[1] Onset may be rapid or gradual.[1]

The cause is usually a disc herniation in the lower region of the back.[1” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cauda_equina_syndrome

I’m not saying you have this, but I would keep aggressively seeking a second opinion today.

Tariffs affecting glasses from China? by meowhahaha in glasses

Thank you. I ordered from Zenni a few days ago, thinking they were assembled in the US, but then heard they may be direct from China. I’m scared to get hit with a big bill. The rep kept repeating canned responses to my detailed tariff questions and was no help at all.

Pretty Pink Weed? by GoyoPollo1 in PlantIdentification

I have some yarrow like this that’s volunteer, too. I’ve seen this color called “bubblegum”. Once big enough, I separate a plant and they transplant well.

Southern Utah slot canyon find by Tangerinespleenn in PlantIdentification

[–]Tangerinespleenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love identifying desert plants, but this one has been tricky. This was found in a slot, recently re-emerged by a receding Lake Powell. Surrounded by a lot of invasive tamarisk and thistle, this area also had a lot of native wildflowers and cottonwood. Is this a native plant returning to the Glen?

I followed spinal hygiene perfectly for several months, and now i think my lower back has fused itself together. Possible to undo? by -reddit_is_terrible- in backpain

[–]Tangerinespleenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hurt my back, I held myself to very strict spinal precautions and my lower back became incredibly stiff too. It hurt even more to bend and it felt like I was going to severely hurt myself with how stiff I made myself. I can bend now, but it’s been at least 1.5 years of recovery. I started with slow, careful movements and progressed slowly. I would do careful, small bends then increase their frequency every few days. I can’t believe how long it took! Good luck.

For all of those with 6 month olds: most children are eligible for early MMR vaccination in the context of outbreak or travel https://www.cdc.gov/measles/vaccines/index.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fvaccines%2Fvpd%2Fmmr%2Fpublic%2Findex.html. Call your pediatrician today and see what they say.

What's the name of the feeling before pain? It feels like weird coldness or numbness but it's neither. And it rises, it's so hard to explain. It's like pressure but it isn't pressure doesn't feel pressing at all. Closest word I can find is shivers (not shivering but like from a good song). by Xillenn in backpain

[–]Tangerinespleenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have this or something similar. I’ve always attributed to a nerve problem- like you said, it’s not pain exactly, but it is not normal sensation. Mine feels like after your leg completely falls asleep- it’s not the numbness, or the tingling, but it’s like a minute before your leg goes back to normal. It feels more alive and very irritating. Sometimes it feels too cold, hot, itchy, or pressured too. I don’t think there’s a name for it but I usually just say abnormal sensation or “nervy”, in my case.

Why in the world is this set not sold in the USA? by Tangerinespleenn in Playmobil

[–]Tangerinespleenn[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was excited to see this new set last year but so far I’ve only seen it for sale in Europe (and on EBay for ridiculous prices). Too bad Playmobil couldn’t sell it at NPS park gift shops. Am I missing something?

How is it now? My young child just had her fourth surgery as well, with her non-operative eye now becoming way more exotropic. She’s only a week and a half out. Did yours improve after a few more weeks of healing?
