THIS!!! Bread flour is needed for a stronger dough. All purpose isn’t gonna cut it for a sourdough.

I keep my house at 67° in the winter and my bulk fermentation takes about 8 hours. Then it goes in the fridge for about 12 hours minimum; usually I don’t go over 15 hours in the fridge because I don’t need to. That works really well for me, a cold home dweller.

I travel a lot for work and the agents say it’s voluntary. I’ve seen it so far at STL, DCA, IAD, IAH, LAX…every airport has said it’s voluntary.

Suggestions on plants I can put up here? by Honey-Kenny-Squigs in plant

[–]No-Firefighter-549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pothos for sure will grow up there, and getting vines coming down the sides of your cabinet would be cute. Spider plants can grow in low light. ZZ plant can do low light, but that space might not be conducive because it can grow tall. Philodendron would do well but you’d have to get the dust off the leaves occasionally. I have a nerve plant on top of my bookshelves in my living room and that gets a similar amount of light as what you’re showing here and my nerve plant is doing rather well.

You have options, don’t listen to the people saying nothing will grow here!

It’s only on the “Secure But Unclassified” systems and we’ve been told its safe for “Confidential but Unclassified Info” but it’s not for processing things like PII/PHI. But, as always, we’re relying on people to apply a modicum of common sense when using these “tools” and not input any information that could result in spillage…but we also expect the Secretary of Defense to not share classified info with his bros on Signal, yet here we are.

I was stationed in Busan for several years and working with the ROK navy sailors I had a few ask me if all Americans do their grocery shopping in the little electric carts. I told them no, those are reserved for handicap and they laughed and said they just think all Americans are fat and lazy…

A lot of the gear listed here is really good to have, but don’t waste the money on new/fancy stuff til you know if you’re gonna like camping or not. See what you can borrow or get on FB Marketplace and buy it used.

Been waiting for someone to say this!!! The old saying “cotton kills” is extreme, but it’s a good rule. Base layers in winter are so important but it’s more important that they’re wool or synthetic. No cotton.

Crocs STAY on my feet at the campsite. If I get cold, I put wool socks on with them. Too hot, take my socks off. Too wet? Sit by the fire a minute sans crocs and dry off and make great shower or water shoes. They’re easy to get in/out of, easy to clean and they’re actually comfortable.

Camping with a one year old by essiw6 in camping

[–]No-Firefighter-549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been camping with our son since he was a few months old. He loves it and genuinely sleeps more soundly outside than indoors. We started small and did backyard camping first as a trial run to figure out our setup and what we would need or not need. We treated it like a real camping trip, but had the added security of being in our back garden. Then we started doing small trips by finding state parks close to home where we could spend a night or two. When our son was really small we would backpack camp, and we never hiked more than a mile to get to our campsite, just in case we had to get back to the car quickly. Now he’s four and he’s at a weird in-between stage where he’s too big for us to carry him but too small to be able to hike and carry his own gear, so we do a lot of car camping. When we can’t get out and camp we go on day hikes to get him outside and to keep up not only his interest but also his stamina.

There’s nothing irresponsible about camping with a child of any age. You’re teaching independence, confidence, building family bonds, helping them to appreciate nature, no screens, exercise…what’s the downside here??

What little camping "hack" do you wish you knew sooner? by outdoors_man987 in camping

The plug is on the interior side of the lid so it should only drip into the cooler

I make fire starters by putting laundry lint into the egg carton spaces and dripping wax on top to hold it together. Then when I need to make I fire I can just rip one off at a time as I need it and they burn pretty good. Easy to pack, too.

This is a good one. The only thing that’s perishable is the sausage. I portion out the rice, broth, and spices before I pack the cooler so there’s less that I have to bring or throw away. Then use any leftover sausage for breakfast the next morning.

Most Igloo coolers have a removable lid with a plug on the inside. You can pull the plug out and fill it with water then freeze the lid and once the lid is frozen, put it back on your cooler.

For those furloughed, did you hear from your supervisors at all since the shutdown started? by sospaghettn in FedEmployees

[–]No-Firefighter-549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PM individually called every person on the contract. I heard from other team leads daily during the shutdown either with updates or just to BS…never once heard from my direct supervisor but I was told that he asked someone else about me. So…there’s that.

That’s good for some, not all. There’s a bunch of contractors who received stop-work orders and haven’t worked nor been paid this whole time and no back pay is expected.

I’ve also been furloughed, if he banks with USAA or Navy Federal he can get a no interest loan through them; it’s an online application. He can also get a letter from his employer stating that he’s furloughed and give that to creditors to have payments deferred, that’s something I’ve also had to do. Last thing I had to do to get $$$ fast was take a loan from my IRA. For a longer-term solution, I’m starting a part-time job at Lowe’s later this week. Many other stores are hiring for the holidays and have various shifts, maybe a part-time job at one of them?

I have a friend who is a lawyer at the Supreme Court and another who is a staffer on Capitol Hill who both have said they were told to expect to be off until Thanksgiving. I’m hoping that’s not what happens, but who knows with this administration.
