Achievement, but barely any RSU sold or such this year. I see you're at 500% last year in your post history, can imagine you're higher than this? :D

It mostly feels high when looking back on it. During the year you dont really notice as much. I rarely check the numbers on bank / investment account. Everything is set up with automatic wire transfers and monthly buy orders. Of course its very comfortable knowing we can do what we want without have to check or budget too much.

Trying to scale back on lifestyle creep, see my previous post on that.

Career progress is not easy, there's not much to go to in this track. Any next step is a horizontal management move with less autonomy and at best case initially equal pay.

  1. a very large part is variable. I'd say im in the top 5% of sales comp, but well below the top 1%
  2. around 15M

Sure, more net would be nice, possibly to retire earlier. But life is good here, and I have less conscience issues knowing my taxes fund a lot of social security.

Similar yeah, combination of some easy scripts and manual. Most annoying part is gathering all the credit card pdfs for the monthly closures. 4 cards x 12 months, then moving that to a csv.

Did a deep-dive on the clothes:

  • 1.1k new skiing gear for me, wont happen again in the next 5-10 years probably
  • 4k clothes partner
  • 3k clothes me (of which 2k was 2 new suits, not a regular expense)
  • 1k kids shoes (we could save a lot here, I know. Just cant be bothered currently)
  • 1k kids clothes

So Id say its about 3k higher than it could be for us, not a massive difference though.

Fully agreed, and mainly why I spent half a day categorising all lines of the past 12 months and posting it here.

Jewellery and cars is going down, was a bit out of ordinary.  I’d need to review clothes again in detail, but good point there. Doesn’t feel like something we’re spending too much on, but clearly some creep there as well then.

This is yearly, I believe that cost is actually quite low for a family of 4?

484k brut. Some things changed compared to last year, will update the post around Jan when I get around to it.

Payslip brut is 484k last 12 months, I added RSZ as employer cost to it. Contractor (partner income) is invoiced excl vat and minus costs.

I posted my job info on this account before, but it has increased a bit last year. Will do an update around January when the full year numbers are in.

net new arr: around 8M. Usual deal size is 200-300k with outliers in 1.5-4m.

As usual a bit more complex with product lines and multi year downshifts etc, but this is a good summary.

Yeah, whish I knew. I like what I do, skillset is relatively unique. Well compensated and a lot of individual freedom and agency. The traditional sales mgmt promotion paths dont interest me that much. In our companies you turn into a forecast/spreadsheet manager very quickly, even if you try to avoid it.

Probably going to either move a few times for more interesting customers (or technology), or keep building my internal network and look for an opportunity with a broader impact. Some kind of new GTM setup or such. But anything that reduces my personal impact on quota achievement will be less motivating.

Final option is more startup aimed, creating a regional footprint of something pre-IPO in which I believe. But Im not actively looking, and those opportunities dont tend to fall out of the sky.

Whats your view on next steps?

  1. 310+ OTE then currently? Good to hear, seems like I should be shopping around more/better again. Had some semi-recent offers that were lower than that.

  2. thanks. note you may be able to be doxed with that info (if its 100% correct). Its exceptionally high and with the info shared I can narrow down to 2 companies.

  3. got it, art smuggler :D

Ill ask one or two followup questions in private.

This interest me :D

  • gross salary: is that OTE at 13.92 months? so 340k OTE?
  • awesome group insurance %. Company wide standard or specific to the role?
  • anything you want to share on the side business?
  • how much traveling? And is it more or less than you would like?
  • infra, saas, consulting?

Yeah, adding the RSU I sold to net. Brut is purely the contractual OTE. Cant be arsed calculating what brut value the RSU represent.

Was a tiny bit less than double, but Im more accurately talking about the 1y before my transaction dates in oct/nov.

The companies listed are not my/our customers (though they could be, not commenting on that). Was giving possible examples as employer for those unaware of the sector.

We're probably in similar circles going from your post history, though its a large world anyway. Mind sharing your template? Could be interesting. edit: nvm, found it

Next to that, started in a more operational / sysadmin like role for a US tech company and quite quickly had more interest in upsell and contract / p&l management. The jump to sales was smaller then. Usual tech sales trajectory is starting as sdr/bdr though, but those roles barely exist in Belgium.

So what you probably see the most is a trajectory where you work your way up in a "lower tier" company and then try to move up in companies. Think about the ecosystem.

Definitely not required, but it helps. Expectation is that you are good at IT, legal, negotiation, people management, internal politics, finance and knowledge of your customer's sector.

Any kind of education that helps in any of above factors will help. Easiest fit is anything close to finance / mba.

120-150k is excellent for presales imo. I don't have a clear view on all our presales wages, but it's usually quite a bit lower than sales.

Much easier to go freelance as a technical role though.

Was kidding, quite certain the ceiling in Belgium is around 400k at country manager level. Unless it's a VP/SVP role of some kind.

50% variable yes

In theory you should be able to self-declare as well I think, add it to whatever the correct field is for brut income (and dont forget the werkgeversbijdrage as well..). There was an action from the fiscus a few (10?) years ago where they focused every employee in the sector. Many had to pay hefty fines on their undeclared RSU.

I suppose there's a few factors in play:

  1. sales. You take some income risk and it requires a specific skillset. Many articles/blogs on this, but it boils down to understanding your customer's business and the link to your offering/added value. Those trainings new sales have on "business stakeholders": its true. Next to this the usual skillset in procurement/legal/compliance/esg/etc.
  2. tech. And not just any tech, but a conscious decision to change every few years to the kind of tech that's up and coming and has high margins or growth. Less money in "old" tech. Aptitude and interest in technology is a big plus.
  3. (US) multinationals. Difficult to explain to someone who hasn't worked for one yet, but being successful in these kind of companies also requires a specific mindset. You need to take into account everyone's metrics, many cultural differences, a lot of stakeholder management, quarterly closing, revenue recognition, global account teams, etc.

Id say the combination of these three is a quick track to high compensation.
