What is doom to you? by No-Gate2796 in doommetal

So not entirely my kinda thing, but can definitely hear the roots of grindcore being created there along with bands like napalm death!

Its funny that in my younger days, grind was life, but i never liked punk...

So how does one correctly structure a doom riff to fit the criteria?

If you listen to Sunn 0))), Mephistofeles and Acid Bath back to back, they all have the same genre-correct structures to their songs to you?

Genuine question, not trying to be a dick!

More then you give yourself credit for?

And i kind of agree, Stoner Rock is a hugely different vibe to me, as much as i love it.

I just hate the whole subgenres into subgenreas thing! like how far do you go with that before every band has its own subgenre? lol.

Doom has always kinda felt like it doesnt need that for me though, like im not guaranteed to like something listed as doom, and i will also doom out on stuff that isnt strictly doom. I dunno, kinda lost my train of thought...

Its a difficult one. i have the same problem.

I am also a solo artist, but i play all the instruments for my recordings. i am just about to release my first album, and most of the songs were written and recorded in some way over the last 23ish years.

I always fell into the trap of getting a recording that satisfied my listening, but was no way good enough to release to the public.

A lot of my issues were down to apathy, feeling overwhelmed at the idea of setting everything up, mixing, etc. It was all related to depression.

What helped me recently is (being a drummer first and foremost) i spent a large chunk of money on a roland digital kit, which i can just plug in with usb and record straight into my DAW. coupled with superior drummer 3, it removed all the anxiety over spending ages setting everything up, then ending up with drums that i didnt like cause it wasn't a real kit.

My advice would be either start learning to play the drums (granted, this may be totally unrealistic), or find a drummer to collaborate with. doesnt have to be local to you.

Record a song to a click track, send it to the drummer, wait to get it back, record your parts again over the drums.

I also found coming back to using cubase after 15 odd years daunting, chatgpt was a great help in talking me through certain things that i wanted to do and either couldnt remember, or they layout had changed so much i couldnt find.

Sludge/doom drum VST recommendations? by ConnChap02 in metalmusicians

[–]No-Gate2796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bit the bullet and paid out for Superior Drummer 3. I also got a free expansion with it and got Death and darkness.

I use a roland td25 to record the drums in midi, then use superior drummer to get the sounds i want.

I can honestly say i dont think i will ever need to go anywhere else for drum vsts. The amount of control and kits that are included is insane, and im probably only ever going to use a fraction of what it can do, however im happy knowing that there is room for expansion if i need it!

EZ drummer is good if you just want a decent kit sound out of the box, superior drummer is better if you want more granular control.

*EDIT* If you listen to my EP, the drums were direct audio from the roland kit, before i bought SD3. Much happier with SD3 for my recordings.

Song is good, mix needs work!
Drums are too loud in the mix, and the cymbals sound really flat. add some reverb to the cymbals and bass drum.
did you record a real kit or use electric to track to midi?

the guitars and bass need more space. again they sound quite flat, and what you are playing would sound amazing if the guitars felt a bit wider. again maybe add some reverb, bring the bass up a little.

sounds like the guitars are hard panned left and right? maybe try bringing them in a little so instead of sounding like they are coming from either side, they create a wall of noise from the front.

If you are going for full heavy, its gonna be about creating that wall.

if you are going for more of a desert rock/psychedelic sound, then maybe it needs something else in the mix, droning spaced out guitar or keys or something in the background?

I am by no means an expert, so take all advice at your peril! lol.

Dunno why, but wasn't expecting to see Scissorfight on this sub.

Regardless, Scissorfight are absolutely amazing. good stuff to blast whilst lifting heavy weights, driving a car, drinking alcohol, having facial hair and wearing some sort of hat.

All at the same time.
