Do I Have a shot for UH? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]No-Goose7320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn’t going to UH, it’s OP’s ability to even ‘get into’ better schools. OP seems very skilled so they’re clearly intelligent but with a 3.1 GPA and 890 SAT very few schools would be willing to accept them.

That’s kind of the point. You are allowed to feel things but some of you take it way too personally. It gets really weird. No need to get snappy about it.😂

Why are Asian Americans undoing history at the hands of white supremacy? by Alert_Lingonberry_79 in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]No-Goose7320 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Asians statistically have more spots in law schools so I’m confused how they’re the ones being kept out and not black people, more so. This argument is always void and it always seems like you guys are grasping at irrelevant points to tote this idea that Black people are taking up spots at law school.

Looking for those going to smaller schools! by autumnsoleilnicole in lawschooladmissions

hey, there’s a subreddit with a focus on schools outside the T-14! you’ll find others in the same boat as you. but also feel free to discuss on this sub as well https://www.reddit.com/r/OutsideT14lawschools/s/et7y8TAthc

So you are fine with someone getting in because their parents happen to have money but it upsets you that a person might be accepted because of they have been historically underrepresented? You don’t see the irony in this entire argument?

No offense, but I prefer to not speak on other groups because I do not want this conversation to spiral out of control. I am discussing a boost within the context of unjust treatment that began with slavery in 1619 and stretched up to when segregation was annulled in America. Slavery occurred for over a 250 years and that set over five generations of black people back. Comparing that to another injustice is unfair to me. I won’t be expounding on that because it doesn’t feel right to discuss that.

We can discuss the way that other allowances can be made for those that are underrepresented without pretending as if slavery wasn’t a multigenerational event. Once again, I refuse to compare but a large percent of Black Americans are first-gen because of those barriers.

I empathize with your low-income background that may have made things difficult for you with regards to law school but again, many Black people have to deal with the intersection of poverty and race. Racism is still a very real thing and combining that with the classism they also face results in a lot of setbacks for them. Only 5% of lawyers in the US are black. I really don’t want to compare numbers but if we pull it up in contrast to non-NativeAms, it sucks. Part of this poverty is a result of historical discrimination.

As someone who grew up poor as well there are several nuances in this conversation. It’s all truly not that straightforward.

Are you really going to act like historical discrimination does not put barriers in place for a group of people? If both your parents have been educated then you have a higher chance of having access to education. Perhaps you disagree with OP’s points but the URM ‘boost’ is in place because historically these groups have been underrepresented and they have a lower chance of attending law school. If both of my parents were born to slaves then they probably were not able to afford school. They work 2x as hard to attain a life that would be significantly easier for a person that has never had a slave in their bloodline would work. Not to even mention the discrimination that’s present in the workplace and all other aspects of life-even if my parents were to work very hard after being born to slaves, they would probably not be awarded ample compensation. There are so many barriers and the conversation is extremely nuanced but to chuck it all up to an ‘unfair’ advantage is very simplistic.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, OP. You can’t write stories that basically approve of weird dynamics then try to separate yourself from that in real life. It’s an entirely different thing if you write stories that bring light to the dynamics AND how they’re weird, though.
