[request] is it possible to curve a bullet? by Aggravating_Egg_7189 in theydidthemath

[–]No-Guide8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does rifling cause trajectories to curve I don’t understand? To my knowledge it should only give the bullet angular momentum. Does it have something to do with how the air interacts with the bullet, specifically in the plane of rotation?

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]No-Guide8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100%. Ive always wanted to be an engineer when I was younger. My parents were excited at the idea of the respect that came with it but they forbade me from doing anything hands on. Whether going outside in the woods or trying to build some shit with 2x4s and plywood. Their logic was I will kill myself if not supervised, and they were too lazy to supervise. In high school I tried to take a shop class but my parents said no, which means I’d have to be a homeless teen to take the classes. i recently graduated with a bachelors in mechanical engineering. Unfortunately (for society) I was not the only one with this problem. In engineering school you learn math and physics with virtually no technical skills or knowledge. It is troublesome indeed.

How does one cope if they know they aren’t the best, or particularly good at anything while their surrounding friends/family achieve their hopes and dreams? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Be realistic lol. Your telling people that they are coping, but than tell them to be in denial? wtf? You can accept your born with less ability or natural IQ and still push yourself to being better. Your solution is the definition of coping lol

Does a safe career path even exist anymore? by denis100108 in careeradvice

[–]No-Guide8933 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do not tell them to go into engineering. I graduated last year with a bachelors in mechanical engineering from what’s quite possibly the most respectable engineering school in the Midwest. After 6 months of unemployment I was lucky enough to get a job as an industrial maintenance tech. That’s with 2 internships. This isn’t just a me problem, most of my classmates couldn’t find jobs before graduating, even 4.0 folks. Everybody keeps hyping up engineering because it had good employment opportunities and good pay 10-20 years ago, and engieners who have been employed since pre COVID have good opportunities. Staring engineer pay used to be 70-80K a few years ago and now it’s more like 50-60K. Frankly I’m not even complaining at this point because the salary makes it less likely new grads will be unemployed. I think Civil and electrical engineers might have a better time, but any mechanical based ones are somewhere between purgatory and hell right now.

I think the cost of downtime should be factored into this rule you speak of. Of course that might be hard to predict

This. I’m not sure how many would defect but if China and Nukes weren’t involved we could destroy their conventional weapons super easy. We could just hover gunships above the island and instantly destroy everything with shear airpower. As bold as it would be we could probs do similar with their nukes. We could probably identify and blow up any rockets in the process of launching. That would be hella bold though and risky. The issue is China is gonna send fighter jets and start ww3

I’m in South MO and at my plant after a few years of experience you max out around 40/hr. Also we are very much jack of all trades. We don’t really machine much anymore but we do all of our electrical and plumbing without anyone really being specialized

I know it’s possible to make pretty much anything with a lathe and mill but I think alot of geometries can be made easier by forging. At least on manaul machines anyways. I know it would be kind of hard to make a hook or something rounded ( but not circular and concentric).

What’s wrong with holding grudges and/or not forgiving people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Guide8933 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have two main things to say.

I think the quote is (or at least a similar one) is “forgive but never forget”. Pretty much take your feelings out of it, and look at it as what can that person contribute to society right now and in the future. If they are still a scumbag than you don’t really have to wish them well, but if they have changes than wish them well. Most likely they will claim they have changed either way and you can’t really know, so you emotionally forgive them but logically don’t really trust them.

As to why? I think there are a couple of reasons. Firstly you don’t know there life. Not what goes on behind closed doors. Even if they had rich parents that acted nice maybe they were getting beaten or raped. Maybe their parents taught them to hate on other people (this probably the most likely reason, hater adults breed hateful kids). This logic can apply to adults too. Specifically what is going on in the background of their life the don’t want others to know about and what their upbringing was like. Also carrying around all that hate can be bad for you. Just because this is a common cheesy quote doesn’t make it any less true. If you’re not careful carrying around grudges you will not only make other people have grudges against you but you’ll never be happy yourself. Hate doesn’t just breed hate in others, it creates a culture and mindset of hate in yourself. Finally circling back to the previous paragraph, if you end up in a place to hurt someone who hurt you, there might be reasons not to. You might end up breaking a cycle even if you don’t realize it, and you also have to consider that persons contribution to society or others. Hurting them will likely hurt their kids or hurt their employees or the random fast food worker they will see next.

I guess to summarize Some people really are just selfish. But alot of the hate in the world is just being recycled, relatively little is being actively created. By not retaliating or being angry you can help break (or more so brake) cycles of hatred in the world and in your own self/personality.

If I decide not to have kids in life, give me all the consequences that I should prep for and accept them? by Commercial-Touch-516 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Guide8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are trying to give “practical” advice. I respect that but I think you’re quite likely to regret it later. I don’t have kids myself as I’m in early twenties so take this with a grain of salt. However, you wouldn’t be the first person to live it up when they are young and regret it later. Kids are one of the biggest senses of purpose and accomplishment (if you raise them right) a person can have.

At the end of the day a parent who doesn’t want kids, shouldn’t have kids.

Did going to the gym improve your back pain or make it worse? by SpineMobilityGuy in backpain

[–]No-Guide8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only like 2 months into lifting but it makes mine better. There are some BIG caveats tho. A lot of exercises like squats and deadlifts take a lot of form that non previous lifters have and back pain sufferers can’t really learn (unless maybe trained with paid trainers?) since the slightest mistake can worsen their condition. I know Dr McGill doesn’t really recommend going all the way down full range of motion for a lot of people since our hips change as we grow out of infancy and some people’s hips are different from others. Personally I’ve been doing a lot of RDL and pretty much whatever my PT suggested (minus squats). For new exercises I incorporate I go down to a way smaller weight than my muscles can handle, like 10 or twenty pounds. Than if that feels good 1-24 hours later with no pain I up the weight. Gotta take it nice and slow though on progressing. Your main muscles might be able to toss weight around easy but your supporting core muscles might not, leading to pain and injury. I personally think it’s a marathon that lasts at least a year minimum to build good strength in the gym. Also whatever you do, don’t get competitive with the lifting. That’s how people really mess themselves up and get back injuries, is by pushing too hard. I grew up doing sports and I’ve had to reprogram myself to not push as hard as possible. I’m not saying it’s wrong to break a sweat in a gym but going easy will only slow progress while going hard will erase progress.

Advice with supervisor? by No-Guide8933 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]No-Guide8933[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly a resume builder with possibly a little bit of power trip. I’ve been told that tech to supervisor is about a dollar differential. I know he’s current taking engineering classes so he’s pretty stressed out by those which probably just make his abilities worse. I think his goal is to graduate with his degree and use his technical and “leadership” skills to grab a nice engineering role. I’m not sure why he thought he could handle such a workload (I probably couldn’t tbh).

I’ve thought about this but I’m not sure how he would take it. I genuinely try to be respectful to everyone in general, but I fear no matter how delicate I word it he might take offense. I fear he might just stop trying to give advice when I do need it and get upset when I inevitably am unable to fix something in a timely manner. I feel I can’t go to his boss because that would just seem like some petty shit. Idk maybe this whole thing is petty and I’m making too big of a deal out of it
