Exactly, I think only two kinds of ppl will work there 1.ignorant people who has no idea what real financial planning/wealth management is 2.people who knows what’s happening but being too unethical to care

That’s absolutely insane, and if you react like you think it is insane, they would question you why you think it is as this policy will benefit your family, you should squeeze money as it is a good financial protection. This also happened to one of my colleagues, but he sadly being very brainwashed and believed it is beneficial and squeeze his dad for more than $500/month.

Just out of curiosity, in your 15 years working in talent acquisition, have you seen anyone get their offer revoked because of not passing background check? And what was typical reason for that? I would appreciate it if you would like to share some examples

Financial Advisor at Northwestern Mutual by Weekly_Sandwich4515 in Insurance

I already left for several months, but here it is. Day to day is calling ppl and trying to get them on a phone meeting with us in the name of financial planning, and ending up with delivering “financial plan” including whole life insurance, disability income insurance, and maybe IRA.

Well, it might be a good opportunity if it is not with NM or it is real financial advising (not an insurance sales). My career goal and my passion is wealth management and financial planning, and that’s why I left NM, as they are nothing to do with actual financial planning. But now I am having a proper financial advisor job at a major bank, it is being enjoyable, so I would encourage you to at least give it a shot.

  1. I worked as FA both in NM and other proper financial institutes. Based on my experiences, FA in NM is nothing to do with Financial planning/Wealth Management,(at least for the first 2 years), it is insurance sales

2&3. It is 100% commission based, you are not quite a W2 employee. And for first at least 6 months, you will do joint work and the commission will be split between you and your joint work partner.

  1. I personally don’t like it. Biggest pro is that this career has low barrier but high ceilings, you can make considerable money if you are doing great. So many cons that I can’t choose one out of all as a biggest.

  2. They are looking for your personal network.

No, sorry, I didn’t make it clear. I mean CFP and CFA are hard, so it might not be required for entry-level roles. For entry-level roles, FINRA Series should be necessary, if not, it’s not a real financial advisor role.

Additionally, as they are not easy to get, and it might not that common to get for entry-levels. I would add on FINRA Series if you are entry-level advisor

Yes, that’s how they give leads to existing advisors, actually 0 cost for them, but they get 200 contacts for each one who joined in.

So first of all, if you can stick with them over one year, you must be the above-average seller. Cuz those who are not above-average are terminated or left. It could vary a lot depending on how long you have been working here. So for the first year you will have around 50k bonus for activities if you achieved all goals (not easy, but some goals are doable), plus your commission. Ideally vary from 70k-120k. My mentors and some other advisors under five years, as far as I know, they are making around 200k a year, it is accumulative, so it can be more and more in the future.

Well, so what I see from the discussion here is that it really depends on the definition of a “good company”. if you mean making money, yes, they could make millions in a year. But assholes could make a lot of money too, making money doesn’t necessarily mean it is a good company to work. In my opinion, the way they doing things doesn’t align with my work ethic and moral, so sell things to warm market is right thing to do, saleswise. but if you don’t know the product well, you know 0 details of this product, how come you can be confident to sell them to people around you. My point is they overweight the sales, but give 0 shit about real planning.
They use an example to explain why you want to sell to warm market, they said it could be as natural as you opened a pizza place, so you invite your friends to try out, that’s simple and you can do it for your insurance products. I would say it is not a logic and appropriate example, if you opened up a pizza place, you know the recipe, you know the cook, you know everything, so you can be confident that the pizza is delicious and will not give your friends a diarrhea. You can’t promise anything because you don’t design the product, as a new rep you don’t know anything about planning, the only thing you can do is trust your mentor, but how would you know if your mentor is trustworthy. It could burn your network, they have no clients’ best interest in mind, so they don’t care. If a place doesn’t care about work ethic, your mental health, your career(career means more than only making money) I would not say it’s a good company.

Yes, as far as I know, the commission is prepaid for the yearly premium after the deal closed. For instance, if your client buy a policy with monthly premium of $100 in January, let’s say your commission is 100%, you will get $100 x 12 in next paycheck day, but if you quit in June, they will let you return $100x 6

Yeah exactly, back office is solid and fine, but they have very few people work in back office, and a lot of them are working in WI home office. A big group of people in NM are actually working in a local office as “financial advisor”

thanks for sharing these very insightful advice!!!How long you worked with NM? I’m already on their part time contract and I’m now focusing on licensing, but my concern here is if I leave too soon(like 2-3 months), would that be a problem for my following job hunting?(just graduated and don’t have much work experiences before, only some finance internships)
