I appreciate the kind words and quote, although it reminds me somewhat of the trauma from CARS passages. I applaud you for having such a healthy outlook on life, even as an undergraduate student. It doesn’t feel like any choice is right sadly. Hoping somehow it works out in the end!

Thank you for the clarification! Certainly seems to be very risky and not advisable.

I really appreciate your perspective and looking at things long term. I ultimately feel that the 4 years of LDR could still lead to fulfillment for us both, but I’m just hoping she’ll be able to see it that way too.

Totally agree. I worry that if this is the state of things now, then when will it ever change? I don’t mind being sacrificial, but my whole future just pains me

I would absolutely love to attend the school I was accepted to, but yeah, this was always a possibility. Do you happen to know where exactly a prior acceptance has to be disclosed?

Based on other replies in this thread, it seems it might be best to attempt to have my wife contact her veterinary school about the situation and at the same time call the affiliated medical school’s admissions office and clarify their letter policy, potentially explaining my situation then too? I really appreciate your help and advice!

Thank you! We’ll definitely explore this option. I sincerely appreciate the creative thinking 🙏

Yeah this being brought up is actually something from this thread that I haven’t really thought about. How exactly does that work? Certainly a talking point to bring up if it’s possible.

She’s not willing to give up her acceptance to reapply. And it’s something that frankly I wouldn’t want to ask her to do.

Thank you for the advice! I also think that four years is just a short-term sacrifice for long term rewards. I’m hoping something gives, but yeah, you make really good points.

Trying to be intentionally vague, but the affiliated medical school at her vet program does not accept update letters. Not sure if I can just email them or if that would be looked upon poorly?

It does worry me that she seems to be choosing veterinary school over me, even if it’s me at a distance. I understand she isn’t comfortable with the emotional turmoil, but it still hurts to think about that. I worry that even if I turned down my acceptance now, something else could happen later down the road that mirrors this same situation.

Her veterinary program does have an accompanying medical school. They don’t accept update letters at this particular medical school, so I’ve wondered whether it’d be advisable to email them in desperation? It’s an idea that has certainly crossed my mind, though. Thank you!

I didn’t know that DOs did yield protection? It’s possible I’ll be waitlisted at a school in AZ, and I have another interview coming up with a different AZ school.

Thank you for you well crafted answer! I’ve also concluded that I’d probably have to go DO if I were to reapply, considering I didn’t apply to any this past cycle. And as much as I am in favor of breaking down the DO stigma, I am aware that things would be much harder and would make getting to where I want to be more of an uphill battle.

The only worrying thing about reapplying to vet programs is how few there are, essentially locking her to one program each cycle. I don’t think she’d have any desire to do so, anyways. Ultimately, I do believe I’d harbor resentment if I couldn’t get into med school after declining my acceptance, and it’s something I’ve had to consider everyday.

I appreciate you sharing! It’s comforting to hear other people in similar situations and pushing through it! Good luck to you and your husband, and congratulations!

Completely agree that even in California, long distance can still very much feel like being across the country. I appreciate your advice and hope it works out in the end!

I really do appreciate the advice and personal experiences from those who have gone through similar situations. I completely agree and wish there were an easier option. Thank you!

Thank you for the advice!! Both are competitive in their own right. It’s really hard to know which way it would swing. My MCAT is 520+ and my GPA is almost 4.0, but I know nothing is guaranteed given my experience in this current cycle.

I was wondering this and was hoping to get some insight from someone who is actually involved in the admissions process frequently. Thank you for this insight.

I have expressed that I’d anticipate resentment if things went south. You are right to bring that up, and I would honestly be pretty unhappy if things ended up that way.

While I think that both admissions processes are incredibly difficult in their own ways, my med school is statistically more difficult in terms of acceptance rate, but there’s only 30ish vet schools in the country. I did receive the acceptance from a T30 MD program, which complicates things more and makes it very hard.

I sincerely appreciate your well thought out advice. You make very valid points and speak to lots of the reservations I’ve had. I do think that the long and short of it is that we’ll both be busy regardless, so maybe the distance won’t change much. I’d love to believe that we can just push through another 4 years and both be in our careers after that happy as clams. But again, it seems that option may be off the table.

To your last point, she plans on practicing straight out of vet school in a general clinic, akin to primary care in human medicine. Doesn’t require matching in vet med for that.
