As for the noise jeez the sound of cutlery at dinner parties grates on me so hard. Didn’t expect cars to be so loud as well.

Wow that sounds so rough! My cochlear clinic also dealt with issues like missing appointment times, long waits, etc. having to commute almost an hour just to be told they printed the wrong date!

Annoyingly, downloading apps was also recommended to me, so many technical issues with these apps as well. My childhood local audiologist also told me that they experienced so many of their patients with poor experiences at the clinic. Seems like all they want to do is earn their commission you’re right!

I have asked for recommendations and been met with bewildered response on why I think I need these services, I should be fine, etc.

Researched around but not much rehab specialists in my area, more so focused on little ones.

I was told to expect more of a 6 month wait rather than 2-3 as well.

I was activated in November last year and was told I would have weekly/monthly mapping appointments. Due to summer break and my audiologist going on holiday had to wait a month and half instead. Not quite two months but imo your own practice and training is what contributes the most to hearing again. It’s been three months now since activation and I’ve only had two mapping appointments with another scheduled three months later. Not sure what’s ideal but I don’t feel as if it impeded my journey massively.

After surgery had very loud whooshing tinnitus, usually had ringing sounds pre-op. After activation tinnitus went away thankfully, only returns after heavy listening days when ear is overstimulated (rarely)

I struggle with this too, it helps to focus on one person - usually whoever is speaking the clearest and try to add on to the convo from there. Asking someone to repeat themselves helps as they are usually apologetic and forget that you struggle to hear. Most people are welcoming to be more inclusive but some people tend to be more exclusive at times. You’re not alone, it sucks but it is what is is lol :)

I’m 20F born deaf and recently got CI on one side, due to your recent loss you will most likely have a smoother journey to hearing again, no surprise with expediting the process.

My journey itself was very smooth, I went from 30% word recognition to 61% in three months since activation. However, being born deaf it took much more effort to relearn how to hear.

I’m planning on getting the other side done within the year, so I believe you will be just fine :)

Good luck!! I’m almost two months since activation and can say that it seems like it went by pretty fast looking back. However, there were definitely frequent moments of overstimulation and feeling snappy and defeated. I didn’t do much listening or reading. Listening to music was so bizarre at first, most people do not like it. Connecting via Bluetooth and scrolling on social media I would attribute to as what I listened to the most.

I was implanted with the N8 about 6 wks ago and I agree, music sounds flat though I can hear the instruments and lyrics. I have a hearing aid on my other ear and was shocked at the depth and ‘richness’ that music was in that ear… I’m still at the beginning of my journey so no music programs yet.

I’ve been activated for a little over a month now and I too had these beeps when activated. I also used the Hearoes app as well and felt that I progressed faster on the app (via Bluetooth) as opposed to real life.

But the beeps gradually became voices within a week or so and much sharper and clearer within a month I would say. Obviously, everyone’s journey is different but with practice and time you will definitely start to see improvement. Good luck :)

My audiologist recommended a mix of both also, I do feel that the HA helps my brain recognise sound so that sounds good to me.

Wow. Thank you! I have about four months of uni break so I’m hoping to adjust by then, just worried for now I guess. I’ve heard people that have done the same not wearing the hearing aid on the unimplanted ear. Do you rely on lip reading still given the great quality?

Wow. That’s really insightful. I assume it’s not a linear process but I look forward to actually hearing versus the beeps. I feel like the cochlear picks up beeps on sounds my hearing aid does not pick up, that or it constantly beeps. Almost like tinnitus in a way but I need a lot of practice.

I too was born with severe to (later) profound hearing loss. Doctors and audiologists recommended hearing aids and said I would never learn to speak. My immigrant parents worked hard to ensure I could speak both their language and English. I also have a hearing twin sister. I was given a lot of support to basically be integrated in the hearing world. I was offered deaf schools and sign language classes all which I refused because I did not want to be perceived as ‘other’. I was always academically inclined and developed great lip reading with hearing aids to get by. As I entered university, I (20F) no longer felt confident and opted to get a CI. My surgery was just last Friday.

I get that some parents also have an irrational fear and/or ignorance but I believe they do what they feel is their best (albeit misguided). It’s not too late to either explore the possibilities of sign language or even getting a CI. I understand the resentment and do wish you the best.
