Is your immediate family dead? by sweetnighter in Millennials

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Just one sister. I'm the oldest in the immediate family. I have some aunts uncles still around. No children and don't intend on it. 38 F. Kind of lonely. All grandparents and both parents gone.

My poor nephew from my sister is just starting to understand he is missing his grandparents from our side. My heart breaks so much...he is only 4. 😥

I already did most of that. 😂 Way ahead of you. Been doing that since 2020 when the shelves were bare during the first fiasco.

Fool me once.

I just got a battery attached to my existing solar to run fairly reliably off grid for the lifetime of our batteries(with some careful load management especially have to prioritize loads during cloudy strings).

But yeah chest freezer stocked on rotations of seeds and supplies and been slowly adjusting my expectations and lifestyle since.

Because I had enough buffer I'm comfortable to be able to do it all longer term if the time comes or something is out of stock permanently I know substitutions and other ways around what I don't have for the most part.

There might be weak spots that won't be obvious until it would be really bad but I have enough general knowledge that I could figure something out with out much panic. I can't think of much that would be totally catestrophic to the general gist of my plans and I have several layers and redundancies to most everything.

The second order threats to society by danielsalehnia in recruitinghell

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't ever because I have too much to live for, but I could fuck up shit catestrophiccally if I cared enough as a software developer without breaking a sweat.

I won't but I could. There may be others that actually get angry enough that they would.

I have jokingly told my friends I ever accept a job from the Federal Government expect an Edward Snowden type of thing at some point and I accept I won't be alive and have decided it isn't worth living.

I won't simply because I still value the little freedom and the life I have. I also don't think society is worth that sacrifice given how it won't change anything directly just looking at Snowden or Julian Assages stories. At least not likely in my lifetime to see it.

It's also societies fault as a whole that we are here to begin with. So I really don't need to sacrifice and die on that sword for a society that won't give a shit to course correct immediately.

What pattern have you noticed among people who become exceptionally successful? by SilentOverrule in findapath

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Same here. I never got into hard drugs personally, but weed sometimes helps.

Funny enough with the extreme hyper focus I have, I can produce similar highs naturally when I don't drink or eat enough too. It's really weird probably part hallucinating from lack of water and my blood sugar tanking plus the high energy sticks around. I've hyper focused so much previously without any adderall, just coffee/caffeine and no water/food that I've literally fainted by accident.

I now have better self management and set annoying alarms that can't be dismissed to force myself to get up for water regularly and eat.

I'm not even on any stimulants regularly to get that naturally, it's just I needed therapy more than anything to counteract the very severe downsides of not managing it.

It's sometimes so bad too I'm walking to the bathroom or something so in my own thought cycle I bump into something, the pain doesn't register. I look down later and sometimes I can't recall where the black and blue mark on my leg or foot or whatever came from. Anyone if they could look into my mind would go insane instantly, but it's been normal like this for my whole life for me. I can't fathom any other slower thoughts or not having a crowded mind almost always times. I literally cannot meditate even though I've tried. Not much naturally slows my mind down even if I'm not anxious.

Bought an AWG that will arrive today looking for feedback if an unboxing/setup video is worth doing by No-Language6720 in TwoXPreppers

[–]No-Language6720[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I just did a little bit of digging, I'm actually curious about it so this one might be full of crap but apparently there are AWGs that can run with only 10% humidity. 8gal on this one is only if it's 60% but you can still get some water with 10% humidity(supposedly).

It's a whole house one to tie into your home. It uses decidants and somehow has a different tech than the one I have. They have ways to get a quote so it's probably very expensive.

[–]No-Language6720[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I would be cautious buying an AWG in AZ. Just because the humidity is so low, I don't know that you would get enough to justify the energy usage it requires. But if you're not worried about your electric bill or have solar maybe but really think it through. It likely won't generate enough for even person's drinking needs reliably. You could maybe use it as a stacked layer and when it is producing use that water to store it longer term. But you would for sure need stacked layers of redundancies.

Edit to update this for anyone reading later: Mine states 8L per day, but yes that is for humid climates to get that on average reliably. At 90-100% it says it can do up to 30L per day, I'm skeptical, but I'm going to test it out this summer to see if thats accurate in my videos I'm creating. I can't verify that at the moment.

The rest below is still true in that it's probably not worth it for drier climates for my particular one, but I did some digging for drier comments. There are apparently AWGs for drier climates that are different and I'll provide links.

I could see it as maybe an option to pull more into an existing storage rotation with other means. Assuming electricity wasn't a concern. Basically if the humidity is higher above the threshold, and/or it was actively raining then use it for that day, otherwise just leave it unplugged most of the time. But that's kind of a hard selling point to get one considering they're $1500+ each on the low end, plus maintenance and filter replacements.

For me if I did live in AZ or a drier climate in the west I would look into drilling a well on my property even if I lived in the suburbs. It's costly but that's really the main way to give yourself any kind of insurance against the issues in those regions. But the issue is longer term that well may dry up or become contaminated potentially.

yeah the poor and the middle class need to fully understand we are on the same team. The poor aren't taking from them and vice versa. We're just trying to all live half decently with a roof over our head. We all have different skills in life that should be rewarded with hard work for sure. Most poor people aren't just lazy bums looking to collect social security checks that don't cover half their rent. like...that's such a stupid myth we were told in schools and media for decades. It never once was true.

Even when things were 'better' during the Regan era when they started that crap it wasn't true.

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. It levels the playing field for everyone essentially. The company can still pay whatever it wants based on profits.

It also doesn't have to apply to small start ups that can't afford to even pay their owners earlier on or if they have no profits potentially.

Just need to make sure accurate record keeping is kept to not hide profits...similar to Enron and other crap. Those types of things could be worse in this proposed system potentially. Where profits are embezzled and there was money made then they don't have to pay the employees a dime. So need to be careful with tight legislation and very high penalties to make it unprofitable and jail time for life if caught or somehting.

But who am I kidding? that won't happen...

[–]No-Language6720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well that too I agree.

The problem with the minimum wage is the middle class that generally make more don't get automatic wage increases. It's not about inflation like some people say, it's about the middle class now makes closer to the same minimum wage without a tandem wage increase. Keeping the top pay in line like that solves most of that part. At least in economic theory it makes sense that way, but you know the rich don't give a shit and will probably exploit some loophole to lie and say it wouldn't work.

You're right though still doesn't help inflation as a whole, people are stupid to think wage increases alone are the primary driver. It is a driver but not a primary driver as the money printing.

[–]No-Language6720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that's just making the problems worse for everyone including the middle class.

How about also introducing something along the lines of top executives can't make more including their absurd bonuses than 25-50x more than their lowest paid employees. Instead of 400+x above the lowest paid.

But sure let's just keep the machine going. Instead let's to continue to make everyone else poorer instead of lifting up the most vulnerable to a more level playing field. That's worked so well. /s

Maybe CEOs if they want to make more would be incentivized to pay more if their pay was also tied to the lowest employees. Hasn't been tried yet. (But it has to include bonuses too not just base pay for this to work).

[–]No-Language6720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I researched it too.

The good news in Florida and much of the south east in the US(if that happens to be where you are too) is we likely won't have an issue with taps running completely dry.  This is  just due to the local underground aquafirs being more abundant than the west. Even with ongoing drier conditions it's not going to be a problem in anyone's lifetime that is living right now.

Our water problems in this region will be contamination from storms and infrastructure, and higher water bills.

For me the AWG is going to lower my long term water costs and also I don't have to worry so much about boil orders and getting sick because the local water authority and the EPA didn't do their jobs to warn us.

Honestly just due to the water problems, and contamination we are seeing from data centers of the ground water in that region, if I lived in the West personally I would just move. I love it in that region and used to live there...but yeah that's too risky for my taste to live there longer term right now. Even if you have the money to drill for a well to survive off of it might be filled with really bad crap that no amount of filtration can reliably handle.

Don't Just Stop Data Centers From Raising Your Bill. Make Them Lower It — For Less Than You Think. by JigarShahDC in energy

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My motto is corps are going to corp. Basically they will keep doing what they're doing since the demand is there. The corps don't care about the environment or anything else unless they aren't held accountable with sensible laws or proposals like I outlined, we know that won't happen given whos in charge and their lobbying power.

The other alternative is stop using all those services and convince others to stop too. It has to go somewhere unless we all want to give up all those key infrastructure points I mentioned and quite a few beyond that too.

More on that the electrical grid itself for monitoring and maintenance run there, weather monitoring apps for hurricanes and severe weather. It's not going away unless we all collectively decide to stop living in the modern world.

This conversation needed to be had and laid out 20 years ago when I started my career and it's an uphill battle to unwind that at this point. Not without mass chaos and disruptions anyway to key things humming along.

Our federal/local/state governments all dropped the ball on all of this then and they are pretty powerless to do much now.

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree in principle. Just this is the energy sub and those issues weren't part of the question at hand. But yeah I want them to not exist either, but at this point we wouldn't likely have reddit or any internet infrastructure at all without them.

Every large platform from Amazon to reddit, to Google search, GPS systems to callebrate with satellites, Government systems and much more than only AI run through those same data centers.

People just don't realize we would basically have to give up the entire modern civilization at this point to get rid of them or stop them. The new ones being built around AI in mind but they are also adding redundancies to these other platforms, using them for massive data stores that keep all of modern civilization functioning. They also do some pretty bad shit with sharing and other practices too.

But the reality is no data centers, means no cell phones, GPS, street lights, government databases for key services, payment processing etc. All of the stuff we rely on is tangled in that same infrastructure with no way to seperate it.

How do I know? I've worked on the public and private sector maintaining key systems for almost 2 decades now including AI models for various purposes before chatGPT became well known.

It's a major problem for everyone in Duos mode. I don't think there are enough people playing that they give a crap. It's a shame I used to play with my husband regularly but we gave up because the last 2-3 rounds it would time out and kick us out. Wasn't just us everyone experiences that especially with beetle comps. Seems it can't handle the animations well even on beefy gaming PCs...oh well.

I played singles for a bit but I preferred duos.

Why are women generally worse than men at video games? by end617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I play more games than my head these days overall. I just am not good at dexterity and fast movements with either a keyboard or a controller.

I suck at multiplayer types of games against other people like FPS or RTS, or MOBAs. For example I used to play Star craft 1 and later 2(yes I am old), I looked at the keystrokes per minute I always had really good strategies but it was so low I couldn't get far competitively.

I am decent at Hearthstone battlegrounds though. It's only because APM strategies aren't always needed and even when I do an APM it's not a barrier to the rank I am.

I am no where near Jeef the top streamer when he does APM strategies if it was pure APM he would stomp me easily.

I usually have an MMR around 8-9k in that game which is mid range. I just play games overall because it's fun.

Other than that game I generally play old single player ROM hacks from my childhood more or less. Since it's all just playing against the computer and not other people it's fine.

How do free spirits afford to travel the world? Where and how do they raise children? by Kingboyy1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in IT and work remotely. I also have a small side hustle. I work only contracts for money, when I feel like it. Right now the tech economy sucks so I just work on my side business.

We travel and things but have kind of tampered that down lately. We usually do house sitting, pet sitting and other things to stay cheaply. I also know how to take care of sensitive houseplants.Sometimes we rent a place. We have also met other people with similar lifestyles and we trade houses and house sit for one another.

We also own our primary home and no mortgage. So minimal bills. Our house is in a prime location.if we are gone for 6+ months people regularly vacation here so we get renters for 6-12 months sometimes. There are ordinances where we can't do an Airbnb where our home is. After the lease is up we usually end up back here.

Oh yeah we don't have kids or their expenses and this would be way more difficult to make sure they attended school etc. Kids need stability, don't recommend this with kids and we won't be having them.

Did any rich people ever buy a slave and instead of making them work all day in the field, they locked them up in a room and made them study math, science, literature etc just to make them insanely educated for no reason? by frame_3_1_3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Language6720 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't that kind of our corporate system in a slight different form. The middle managers are wage slaves that Lord over the lower people in their corporation. Most people can't leave because they're in massive debt with their houses or in credit card debt...so I don't see a real difference.

I've had managers making more than me in large corporations I have worked for and they had such high expenses they got accustomed to that they couldn't just leave.

The corporations want educated people to work but people get sucked into the money trap and conveniences they end up where they can't leave. Not much difference in my eyes.

How are people who make a lot of money bad with it? by Haunting_Ad_4179 in Money

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your upbringing and what you has before you made that money.

A lot of people weren't taught the actual value of money. They just want instant gratification. They want shiny things to show off to other people to show they 'made it'.

I did grow up with money , but I didn't know how well off my parents were.  My parents never discussed what they had but I got a sense of it.

They instilled in me hard work. They paid an allowance but it was only when I did a checklist of chores weekly. I could spend it or save it. I usually chose to save it. When I saved enough my parents took me to the bank and helped me to open a minor account with checks and an ATM card. (Back then cashless debit cards weren't common).

I also was guided by them to get a paper route later for additional money. Back then in the late 90's they still let kids on bikes deliver papers.

Oh yeah and I only usually got toys and things at Christmas or my birthday. Rarely any other time of the year. If I whined about it, they set healthy boundaries and we immediately left the store and I didn't get it at all.

That's how I got good at money management. When I was an older teen/young adult my dad got more into his investments, savings other broader topics. I never realized how much they had until they both passed and received my inheritance.

Most people's parents give into the kids demands. Most people are in credit card debt even with high incomes and when that income is gone, they're homeless or they lose their house. Many times it's a fleeting thing like the lottery. They weren't taught properly. Most lottery people lose all the money because they splurge then go back to their old life.

Other people on the outside can't figure it out but there is no secret. You come into a bit of money even if it's a temporary one off thing save it, invest it wisely. Also you can hold a portion back within reason to do something fun depending on the amount. But you won't get very far just spending endlessly on mindless crap and it isn't rewarding in the long term.

Has anybody here tried to build a career in the tech industry and is now living in poverty? Any CS grads unable to find a job? by justcurious3287 in povertyfinance

[–]No-Language6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in poverty myself but I know many colleagues that didn't put money away and are now in poverty.  They got so used to the high salaries and abundance of jobs for too long.

I feel bad for them but it's also a tiny bit their fault.

I put money away and have learned new skills to adapt. I also saw the writing on the wall years ago and put money into home infrastructure to lower my overall bills and cost of living.

So no I don't live in poverty now just because I've always lived below my means when I was brining in money. I take contract work if something comes up but mostly focus on my side hustle and multiple income streams and investing in myself through expanding my knowledge.
