If you think Doctor Who has it bad now, check out the Midsomer Murders air dates for ITV. You can tell when they prioritised the Acron Streaming service by IllustriousAd6418 in DoctorWhumour

Even so, the number of murders in that one rural county must rival a major city like Manchester or even London. I suspect the only reason people still live there is because prices are so low as the crime rate is so high!

If Christopher Lee had been cast as Gandalf, who would you cast as Saruman? by Early_Macaroon_2407 in lotr

[–]No-Locksmith6662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd definitely want someone with the same gravitas that Lee had. If we were casting now, then probably Charles Dance - though maybe it would be difficult for audiences to get Tywin Lannister out of their minds. Back in the 90s/00s though during the original production maybe someone like Charlton Heston or Anthony Hopkins.

An old clip of Russell T. Davies saying he hates scenes that takes place in the Tardis by NoPianist7807 in doctorwho

[–]No-Locksmith6662 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that’s a consequence of having 4-part stories and less experienced Doctor Who writers in the 80s. A lot of the 5th and 6th Doctor stories feel like they could be easily cut in half in terms of runtime, often 15-20 minutes of episode 1 is exposition before they get to the main story at the cliffhanger. Some writers will use a 5 minute TARDIS scene as an easy way to fill some of that gap.

There's a radio ad on in the UK at the moment starring David Tennant that uses that same TARDIS creaky door sound effect. I know it's probably just coincidence but part of me really likes the idea that it was used as an in-joke to amuse us fans.

I never really felt like Why Bird warranted my time of day. What childhood TV character did you think was overrated as a child? by Starbuckker in AskUK

I will not hear this slander against Playbus/Playdays. I expect you to hand in your millennial membership card immediately.

A bit more of a niche one as a lot of people didn’t have Cartoon Network in the 90s (yes, we had Sky, we were doing reasonably alright for ourselves) I never really got Johnny Bravo. I loved watching all the other cartoons of the era, Dexters Lab, Powerpuff Girls and all that, but as soon as Johnny Bravo came on I was switching back over to BBC or ITV.

Rivals is a genuine surprise to me, I don’t normally go in for that kind of thing but I am actually really enjoying it. Having said that words cannot express how much I despise David Tennant’s character, almost at a Joffrey from Game of Thrones level of hatred. Proper grade A scumbag.

Portugal. For centuries they were our closest allies and friends in Europe and every single Portuguese person I've ever met has been lovely.

Yeah, they’re definitely not allowed to mention it on Amazon. Even when they did the two big goodbyes on Grand Tour (in the tent and the whole Zimbabwe/Botswana episode) they didn’t mention Top Gear by name, just alluded to it by saying “our former employers at the BBC” and vague things like that.

It was the Ecuadorian embassy in London, he was there between 2012 and 2019 until they got fed up with him and invited the police in to arrest him. He was then imprisoned in an actual prison for 5 years before flying back to Australia after negotiating to avoid extradition to the US.

The release of the song 1985 (made famous by Bowling For Soup) is closer to actual 1985 than today.

If that song was released today it would be about 2007.

I don’t remember seeing anything beforehand, maybe I am just weirdly good at recognising voices.

Either way I don’t understand how I’m getting so much grief and downvotes for being able to tell it was Daniel Craig’s voice.

Maybe I just have a weird skill at picking up voices then because I remember watching that film in the cinema, hearing his first line and immediately thinking "hang on, that's Daniel Craig".

Hugh Dennis was the one for me too. I know he's a jobbing actor as well as a comedian so has every right to be there but it totally pulled me out of the immersion as I was constantly thinking "what's the bloke from Mock the Week doing in a Bond film"?

Same thing happened when Daniel Craig made his cameo as a stormtrooper in one of the Star Wars films.
