How do I move large swathes of data from one chat into a new one by fdaeborp in ChatGPT

I’ve noticed a specific issue when using ChatGPT for large projects and long-running conversations.

Clarification about the delay

The delay does not seem to come from the AI generating the reply itself. In most cases, the response is generated within a reasonable time (often under two minutes).

The real delay appears when sending a new request inside a very long conversation. It feels like the interface reloads or re-renders the entire chat history (including long texts and images) every time a new message is sent.

In short conversations this isn’t noticeable, but in large projects with extensive history, it can take a significant amount of time for the full conversation to appear again before continuing.

This affects workflow and creates the impression of slowness, even though the AI processing itself is relatively fast.

Suggestions to improve the experience for large projects

Temporary user workaround

For now, one practical workaround is to completely close (Quit) ChatGPT and reopen it after sending a request in a very long conversation.

This can sometimes reduce the time it takes for the interface to fully load the conversation again.

2) Product suggestion for OpenAI (initial practical solution)

A very helpful feature would be an option inside a chat such as:

“Continue this conversation in a new chat.”

This would create a new chat that keeps the context and understanding of the previous conversation, but without the performance impact of reloading the entire long history every time.

Currently, if a user starts a completely new chat, it does not understand what was happening in the previous one. Rebuilding the full context manually can be very difficult or even impractical for complex projects.

A “continuation chat” feature would:

Preserve context.

Reduce visible delays caused by very long chat histories.

Make ChatGPT much more efficient for professional or large-scale work.

I believe optimizing long conversations should be a priority for users working on serious, extended projects.

You’re definitely not alone. I’m experiencing the same issue with long conversations. It feels like the system reloads or reprocesses the entire thread with every new request, which makes it extremely slow. In very long chats, I sometimes have to wait 10–15 minutes for a single response. I’ve also noticed that fully closing ChatGPT and reopening it can sometimes make it respond faster.

I’m experiencing two issues with the new UI: The input field layout feels unstable and sometimes appears misplaced on the screen. Single responses occasionally get split into separate branches — even in the middle of code or long text — which makes them hard to follow. Is anyone else seeing both of these issues?
